Discussing her much-praised performance as The Afterparty’s disarming and shrewd police detective Danner, the standup comic in Tiffany Haddish could not resist dropping some sly one-liners about her own recent real-life run-in with law enforcement.
Haddish joined the “Roshomon”-like Apple TV+ mystery-comedy’s executive producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord and co-star Sam Richardson at Deadline’s Contenders Television panel for the series, where while discussing plans for her fan-favorite character’s return for a second season she dropped a few jokes obliquely referencing her January arrest in Georgia on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Contenders TV: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Noting that she’d yet to hear any specifics from Lord and Miller about her return, “I don’t know what’s going to happen but what I do know is I’m really, really, really excited about it,” Haddish said. “I’ve been doing even more studying.

Crime has always been part of television’s DNA, but in global marketplaces, true crime is enjoying unprecedented levels of success across the streamers and on more traditional outlets.
Earlier this year, Shonda Rhimes’ “Inventing Anna,” starring Julia Garner as the fake heiress Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey), became one of Netflix’s biggest shows ever.
“Inventing Anna” is the tip of TV’s latest crime wave as producers and commissioners hope to find the horrifying stories that might one day take their place alongside such TV true crime successes as “ The Jinx,” “ The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” “Don’t Fuck With Cats” or “Making a Murderer,” the Netflix series that took true crime to the streamers.
“The fascination with true crime has never been stronger,” says Dan Korn, VP of programming at A+E Networks U.K ., whose channels include Crime + Investigation. “We spend a lot of...

In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Peters discusses with Gold Derby Zabel’s path to learning how to “live with the vulnerability but be confident and move forward with his life.”

This story about Evan Peters first appeared in the Limited Series & TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
While it might have been a shock to viewers, the bomb-drop at the end of the unnervingly tense fifth episode of “Mare of Easttown” was not a shock to Evan Peters. (Definitely come back to this feature later if you are not caught up on the HBO drama.) After his endearing, dutiful detective Colin Zabel finally won the approval of his seasoned partner Mare (Kate Winslet), complete with coffee runs and a particularly awkward first date, he moves up the hero ladder when the duo finally hones in on a vile creep (Jeb Kreager) they suspect is behind the disappearance of at least one young woman in Delco. Cut to a pack of Winstons (a key clue), an exchange of anxious glances and drawn guns and before you could take a sip of your Wawa java…...

Evan Peters has proven himself to be one of the most versatile actors around, not only jumping back and forth between the big and small screen but also diving into different genres. He has stolen scenes in superhero fare and horror (“American Horror Story”), and soon will do so in HBO’s small-town murder mystery “Mare of Easttown,” premiering April 18, before stepping into the titular role in “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
What was the process like to go from Ralph aka Fietro in “WandaVision” to Colin in “Mare of Easttown”? Are you purposely looking to take back-to-back projects that are very different?
They started shooting simultaneously and then the pandemic hit and they naturally broke simultaneously, and then they picked back up simultaneously, which I couldn’t believe. But it was fun to go do the restraint and the seriousness and the naturalness of “Mare” and then go off...

If “The Little Things” seems like a movie from another time, it is. John Lee Hancock wrote the script 28 years ago, back when he wrote the Kevin Costner vehicle “A Perfect World” for director Clint Eastwood. Steven Spielberg was interested, but found the drama about the fight to find an L.A. serial killer too noir. Eastwood considered it, then Warren Beatty. Then Danny DeVito.
“I put in a drawer, and didn’t think about it,” said Hancock, who went on to direct “The Rookie,” “The Alamo,” and “The Blind Side.” “But every couple years, Johnson called.”
“The Little Things” seems commercial enough: Set in the 1990s, it’s a thriller about grizzled ex-LAPD detective Joe Deacon (Denzel Washington) who goes into exile after an unsolved serial killer case goes terribly wrong. When he visits LA and reconnects with his old department, he meets hotshot detective Jim Baxter (Rami Malek...

In June, A&e canceled its flagship series Live Pd in the wake of the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests against police brutality.
The cancelation came a month after the network renewed the show for an additional 160 episodes. Live Pd, which aired Friday and Saturday nights from 9 Pm-12 Am, was one of the highest-rated shows on basic cable.
One of the challenges now for A&e and parent company A+E Networks is how to replace a show that aired for so many hours across the schedule.
A+E Networks President of Programming Rob Sharenow lifted the lid on the decision making process in a virtual Edinburgh International TV Festival session moderated by Deadline.

The O.G. of TV true crime has returned. Before there was Making a Murderer, Tiger King, The Jinx, and Serial, the nation’s fix for real-life murder tales came in weekly doses courtesy of Unsolved Mysteries, which ran interrupted from 1987 to 2002. Since the series left airwaves, the genre has grown into a powerhouse: Some networks dedicate their entire programming slate to it (hi, Oxygen), and streaming services rely on true-crime for viral hits.
Yet, 33 years after its debut, old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries remain a profoundly bingeable experience, thanks...

Losing “Live Pd” will be a tremendous blow to A&e, and yet insiders at the network believe they ultimately had no option but to cancel the show at this moment in time.
As the debate swirls over the appropriateness of scripted depictions of law enforcement, the scrutiny has been more intense — even prior to the recent protests against police brutality — for reality shows like “Live Pd” and “Cops.”
Ultimately, after Paramount Network canceled “Cops” and controversy swirled over the death of Javier Ambler in Austin, which was captured (and later erased) by the A&e show, network execs felt they had no choice but to pull “Live Pd” off the air completely. Insiders said the cancellation was made completely internally by A+E Networks, led by president Paul Buccieri, although Disney/ABC Television Group and Hearst Communications — which own the company through a joint venture — were consulted about the decision.

In an era of overflowing choice, focus is more important than ever for traditional television executives.
On the latest episode of Variety podcast Strictly Business, A+E Networks’ president of programming Rob Sharenow discusses how the cable giant pulled its flagship brands out of the ratings trenches over the past two years, thanks in large part to a renewed focus on what A&e and History do well, and a realistic assessment of what wasn’t working so well.
“We’re in an age of unbelievable distraction. There’s a million reasons why people in my profession have reason to panic,” Sharenow says. “There are incredible shifts going on in consumption. … One of the things we’ve done very well is to try and drown out all the distraction and stay focused on the core mission of what the brands has always been — to super-serve the audience.”

Indie production company Hot Snakes Media, whose credits include TLC’s “Breaking Amish” and Animal Planet’s “Extinct Or Alive,” has tapped veteran media executive Colleen Conway Grogan as their senior vice president of development.
Grogan will focus on expanding the company’s scripted and unscripted slates, as well as being involved in its efforts in podcasts and documentaries.
Before joining Hot Snakes, Grogan served as vice president of non-fiction at Lifetime where she developed and oversaw a wide range of female-skewing documentary series and character-led formats, most notably “Bring It!,” “The Rap Game,” “Kim of Queens,” “Date Night Live” and “The Sisterhood: Becoming Nuns.”
Before Lifetime, Grogan worked as senior director of non-fiction programming at A&e. During her tenure at A&e Grogan oversaw some of the networks most highly rated and longest-running series, which included the Emmy-award winning series “Intervention,” “The First 48” and “I Survived.”

Spooky season is upon us, and Hulu is getting into the spirit with a number of horror or Halloween-themed offerings on its October line-up.
Along with Hulu originals like the horror anthology “Into the Dark” and the second season of Stephen King’s “Castle Rock,” the streamer is also offering films from the “Saw,” “Blade” and “Hellraiser” franchises beginning next month. For the more faint of heart, Hulu is also offering three seasons of Food Network’s “Halloween Wars” and the surely adorable “Kids Halloween Baking Championship.”
Not specifically Halloween-themed, but potentially haunting: All six seasons of the original run of “The Hills” will be available to stream on Oct. 1 for those looking to revisit the halcyon days of reality television and questionable late-aughts fashion.

Escape, an established multicast network owned by E.W. Scripps’ Katz Networks, will rebrand itself as Court TV Mystery on September 30.
According to the official announcement of the move, the rebrand will “continue the mission of Escape,” which targets women 25 to 54 with true-crime-focused programming.
Escape is currently available in 103.5 million homes, or 94% of the U.S. TV footprint. Multicast networks, have become a burgeoning sector, emerging from the TV industry’s transition to high-definition signals several years ago, which unlocked new broadcast spectrum capacity.
Katz owns several other multicast networks and last May revived Court TV, an early pioneer known for its gavel-to-gavel coverage of the trials of O.J. Simpson and many others. As a sister network to Court TV, Court TV Mystery will feature a lineup of mainstays like The First 48, Forensic Files, American Greed, FBI Files, Crime Watch Daily and Unsolved Mysteries. (Check out the sizzle reel for the new network above.

In this time of record volume of content competing for audience attention, there’s more than one way to define a series’s success, especially when it comes to structured and unstructured reality shows that don’t follow as strict a format as reality competitions, nor as specific storytelling arcs as scripted programs.
“The DNA and ingredients in every show are very different,” says Keith Cox, president of development at Paramount Network. “You really have to slice it and dice it. Not all shows are created equal, and when you’re thinking of a hit, they’re not defined the same, nor should they be.”
High ratings may be the first indicator of success, but seldom give the full picture of the audience, not only due to viewing habits but also geographic location. “Are they

ITV’s problems with the Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) won’t go away after the union threatened to protest at the company’s annual general meeting next week.
The union is supporting a group of employees and former employees, who claim that there is “systematic discrimination and harassment” against women and people of color at the company.
The group has sent ITV Management, now including CEO Carolyn McCall and recently installed ITV America CEO David George, a letter outlining its concerns.
Producer Tiffany Magby, who has worked on shows including The First 48, who has since left ITV, said: “We wrote to ITV management as a group of women of color to inform them about what we consider systematic discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and overtime violations that we experienced while working on two of the company’s most prominent programmes. Marcia Clark can’t get on a jury. The famed O.J. Simpson prosecutor, who left the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office after the accused murderer was acquitted, has spent the last 20 years writing scripts and novels, plus developing TV shows. But she can’t escape her Simpson trial notoriety.
That may explain why she hasn’t been asked to serve on a jury. “And I actually could be fair!” she laments. “I spent as much time on the defense side of things as I have on the prosecution side. But no one’s ever going to put me on a jury. I do think I get weeded out pretty fast. And my friends are also ruined. When they’re asked if they know any lawyers, they say ‘yes’ and my name, and then it’s like, ‘bye, see ya, wouldn’t want to be ya!’ I’m Typhoid Mary.

The second season of A&E's Nightwatch premieres Thursday, November 5, 2015, at 10:00pm Et/Pt. Given how A&E spins the ratings in its press release, it doesn't sound like Nightwatch is in immediate danger of being cancelled.

If you're any bit of a horror or hard rock fan, Charlie Clouser has already been in your rotation. Think, when your heart races a little more to the strains of the macabre theme to "American Horror Story," or if it's altogether stopped during this first season of "Wayward Pines." If Nine Inch Nails' "Downward Spiral"; or Marilyn Manson's solid '90s albums; or Rob Zombie, White Zombie, or select albums from A Perfect Circle, Killing Joke, Helmet or Puscifer have been in your spinlist, then Clouser has likely already left a mark on you. The writer-musician recently wrapped on scoring aforementioned Fox show starring Matt Dillon. The lead detective assigned to the murder case of "America's Next Top Model" star Mirjana Puhar ironically has a connection to the victim ... they're both reality TV stars. Det. Norma McKee was on A&E's "The First 48" -- a docuseries about murder investigations -- back in 2011, when she was just a rookie. The episode chronicled a double-murder investigation, her first, involving a couple that was shot point blank in their car by a backseat passenger.

Rapper Earl Hayes had thoughts of suicide long before killing his wife and himself on Monday -- back in 2010 he recorded a song with lines like, "I could just kill us both, go out with a smash."The song was called "Suicide" and it was part of a mixtape Hayes put out called "The First 48" (which also happens to be an A&E show about murder investigations). When the call came from an officer who needed help facing an armed robber at a fast-food restaurant, two members of a reality television show riding along with Omaha police hustled to record the confrontation. In the chaotic scene that unfolded, one crew member was struck by "friendly fire" from one of the officers, a bullet slipping past his bulletproof vest and killing him, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday. The robbery suspect was also killed. The weapon he was carrying turned out to be a pellet gun, though it looked and sounded so real that both witnesses and officers were fooled,...

Profits may be up 20% at its UK parent company, but ITV Studios America today found its relationship with the Writers Guild of America East taking a steep fall. As contract talks between the two parties grind on, the scribe guild claims that ITV Studios America has been depriving about 150 of its writers and producers of up to $30,000 a year in deserved overtime pay on its unscripted shows including A&E’s The First 48, Nat Geo Wild’s Cesar 911 and TLC’s Four Weddings. The WGA East says that up until two weeks ago, the Sherman Oaks- and NYC-based company has been making employees put in 60- to 80-hour weeks without any of the compensation that are entitled to under federal and state laws. Under pressure from the guild, the company began giving associate producers overtime pay two weeks ago and not retroactively. That’s only a partial solution, says the WGA East.

If recent viewing trends hold, about 100 million people -- more than a quarter of the entire population of the country -- will watch Super Bowl Xlviii on Sunday (Feb. 2) and then talk about it for days afterward.
But though it may seem that way, it's not the only thing on TV Sunday. The other broadcast networks are taking the night off, but there are marathons and stunts aplenty elsewhere on your channel guide -- and even a couple of original shows. If you're not watching the game, consider these options (all times Eastern).
The originals
PBS: "Downton Abbey" (9 p.m.) and "Sherlock" (10 p.m.). PBS has aired new episodes of "Downton" each of the past three years opposite the Super Bowl and pulled in respectable ratings each time. "Sherlock" has its Season 3 finale.
TCM: "And the Oscar Goes to ..." (10 p.m./7 p.m. Pt). A history of the Academy Awards...
