Battle Royale: What's the scariest movie of all time?

Battle Royale is back – and bloodier than ever – to answer October's most important question: What's the scariest movie of all time?

From Wes Craven and John Carpenter to Guillermo del Toro and Alfred Hitchcock, all the maestros of the macabre are represented in this month’s Battle Royale. From the 1960s up to the early 2000s, sixteen of the most frightening franchises and stand-alone thrillers, including Paranormal Activity, The Shining, and The Silence of the Lambs, have been chosen to represent the best (or worst?) of horror cinema.

Now it’s up to you to pick up that spare axe or chainsaw and whittle down our list of sixteen to just one. During October, you can vote for your favourite jump-fests on Facebook. You have twenty-four hours to chime in on each match-up.

Check out the full bracket below for a sneak peek at the Third Round of Battle Royale match-ups! »

Bradley Cooper rolls up his sleeves for Burnt

23 October 2015 11:58 AM, PDT

Bradley Cooper wasn't a novice to the kitchen when he decided to take on the role of the fictional Michelin star chef Adam Jones in Burnt.

He grew up in a food loving home near Philadelphia - some of his favorite memories are of his grandmother making pizza, cheesecakes and homemade raviolis. He was a bus boy at a Greek restaurant there, a waiter at a fancy establishment near Georgetown University, and a prep cook at an Italian and seafood place in Somers Point, New Jersey.

One day, he said, he cut and cleaned 620 chickens and nine boxes of peppers in addition to making the dough and sauces.

But he didn't tell anyone that when he started rubbing elbows with the Michelin caliber cooks he needed to learn from for this role.

"They wouldn't have cared," said Cooper, laughing. Besides, he needed to get down to work if he was »

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg reunite in new trailer for Daddy's Home

23 October 2015 11:20 AM, PDT

The Other Guys are back together, but this time around they're not playing for the same team. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have reunited to face-off in a battle of Dad vs. Step-Dad in this Christmas' comedy release, Daddy's Home.

Daddy's Home tells the story of a Stepfather, Brad (Will Ferrell) becoming overshadowed by the father of his wife's children. We feel for him, because really, who is more bad-ass than Mark Wahlberg? It becomes a battle for the affections of Sarah (Linda Cardellini) and the children. Things get quite crazy as Brad tries to break out of his reserved demeanour, trying to be the cooler dad. As far as we can see, it's going to be a disastrous attempt, but with hilarious results.

The film also stars Linda Cardellini, who we're excited to see take on another feature-film comedy role. The actress who is most famous for starring as »

Five reasons why we love Bill Murray

23 October 2015 9:00 AM, PDT

With Rock The Kasbah in theatres this weekend, we thought we would take a look at our favourite things about the man, the myth, the legend: the one and only Bill Murray.

Though an enigma off-screen, Murray has long-established his position as one of the funniest and most consistent comedic actors in film history with an output of modern classics like Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Rushmore, and Lost In Translation.

According to Emma Stone in Zombieland, Bill "has a direct line to my funny bone." We agree with you, Emma – though we probably wouldn’t go so far as punching a child for not knowing who Bill Murray is, Woody Harrelson.

So, yes -- with the exception of some the participants of his infamous "Saturday Night Live" era feuds -- everybody loves Bill Murray. But why exactly is Bill so universally loved?

It begins with the plague in first full trailer for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

22 October 2015 12:41 PM, PDT

“My daughters are trained for battle, not the kitchen.”

Katniss Everdeen has nothing on these zombie-fighting Regency Era heroines who have leapt from the pages of literature and onto screens in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as some kick-ass, battle-ready women.  These aren’t the needlepoint-loving characters yearning for marriage from Jane Austen’s 1813 story, but a force to be reckoned with as the plague that has swept England comes knocking at their door.

Of course, this is no ordinary plague, but a massive infection that turns polite and gentile English folk into face-eating zombies.  Cinderalla star Lily James trades her glass slippers in for knives as Elizabeth Bennet, as she and her sisters played by Bella Heathcote, Milliel Brady, Suki Waterhouse, and Ellie Bamber take up arms in the fight against the encroaching zombies.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Jane Austen without a Mr. Darcy.  Sam Riley takes »

Talking revenge and justice with Remember stars Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau

22 October 2015 12:00 PM, PDT

Is revenge ever the same as justice? The two terms often get muddled and in Atom Egoyan’s latest film, Remember, the distinguished Canadian director examines where exactly that line blurs.

Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer plays Zev, a dementia-ridden 90-year old Jewish man who, following he death of his wife, is persuaded by Max (played by Academy Away winner Martin Landau), a wheelchair-bound fellow Auschwitz survivor, to hunt down and murder the Block Commander responsible for killing both their families. Fated to meet once more, only this time in a nursing home, the two men execute a plan where Zev is armed only with a detailed letter drawn up by Max laying out instructions for their retribution. Tasked with surviving his own physical frailty, ailing memory and "Breaking Bad’s" Dean Norris, Zev sets off on a cross-state Nazi hunt to exact revenge.

From Rock Gods to Pop Stars: Top 10 Fake Movie Bands

22 October 2015 10:00 AM, PDT

Two musically motivated movies head to theatres this week- Jem and the Holograms and Rock the Kasbah- and that’s got us thinking about some of our favourite fake bands on film.

The flashy and beloved 1980s’ cartoon "Jem and the Holograms", gets a 21st century makeover this week as a small town girl is catapulted into the spotlight thanks to her poppy popular online videos featuring the musical talents of Jerrica (aka Jem) and her three sisters.

If pop music and strobe lighting isn’t your jam, Bill Murray goes rock n’ roll in Rock the Kasbah. Murray stars as a faded music promoter who embarks on a tour of Afghanistan with Zooey Deschanel in tow as she tries to make it in the music biz. When things go south, Murray’s Richie Lanz sees opportunity in the form of a young Pashtun woman who could be the »

War And Remembrance: Speaking to Christopher Plummer about Remember

22 October 2015 8:00 AM, PDT

Christopher Plummer is a marvel. At age 85, when most men his age have long ago settled into retirement, he’s acting full-time both on stage and in films. He holds the record as the oldest person — age 82 — to win an Oscar (his was a Best Supporting Actor nod for 2011’s Beginners), and this month he carries a heavy load as the star of director Atom Egoyan’s dramatic thriller Remember.

Plummer plays Zev, a Holocaust survivor suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s who sets out to find the Nazi guard who killed his family 70 years ago in Auschwitz. Plummer was at his Connecticut home when we spoke by phone about the daunting role, his own memories of the war and how he keeps his mind sharp.

What drew you to this role?

“Well, I had never really done this sort of thing before, a kind of victim. He »

Jennifer Lawrence doesn't owe the world anything in new Joy trailer

21 October 2015 8:29 AM, PDT

Jennifer Lawrence once again finds herself in a period drama for director David O. Russell.  And really, after he directed her to an Oscar in Silver Linings Playbook, why mess with a good pairing?

Like 2013's American HustleJoy is based on a series of real-life events.  Instead of focusing on con artists and scams, Joy is about a spirited young wife and mother who becomes a business entrepreneur with her Miracle Mop.  The never-before-seen cleaning tool helps Lawrence’s character Joy bring fame and fortune to her family, but in the wake of her successes, misfortune finds its way into her personal life.

Lawrence leads an ensemble cast featuring more O’Russell regulars including Robert De Niro who stars as Joy’s father and Bradley Cooper in a supporting role.  Edgar Ramierz, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and “Orange is the New Black” star Dascha Polanco round out the rest of the cast. »

Daisy Ridley and John Boyega have the best reactions to The Force Awakens trailer

20 October 2015 2:48 PM, PDT

Just because you’re part of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast doesn’t mean you get any special treatment when it comes to seeing the film’s trailer.

Just like the rest of the world, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega had to wait until the trailer hit the web and their reactions are pretty much the same as those of us who aren’t featured on the poster.

The pair, who are quickly becoming fan favourites online thanks to their adorable friendship (just watch our interview where John calls Daisy his “little peanut”), lead a cast of new faces in The Force Awakens.  Boyega, who we’ve had our eye on since his stellar film debut in the British alien invasion movie Attack the Block, stars as Finn, a Stormtrooper who now finds himself stranded on a desert planet.  Not much is known about Ridely’s character Rey, »

Ralph Fiennes is not impressed in new Spectre clip

20 October 2015 2:21 PM, PDT

Of course we're excited for Daniel Craig's last go at playing James Bond, but even more exciting is Ralph Fiennes being promoted as the new M . While we'll miss Dame Judi Dench, there's really no one else better suited to take her place, as you can see for yourself in this first clip from Spectre.

Fans of Fiennes know that he can dish the insults (In Bruges, anyone?) and we hope that there's more of this to come in Spectre. Upon learning that the 007 program may be shut down, M is beyond unimpressed, and doesn't exactly have anything nice to say. We would not want to be the person delivering that news. A world without 007 is not a world we'd want to live in.

If this first look is any indication, we'll be enjoying our car chases and shoot outs with a side dish of sass.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt on the freedoms and challenges of making By the Sea

20 October 2015 11:18 AM, PDT

Angelina Jolie first branched into directing when she made a foreign-language film that took place in the midst of the Bosnian war, In the Land of Blood and Honey. Since then, she directed the incredible true story of Olympic athlete and soldier Louis Zamperini in last year's Unbroken. Now she is back with her third directorial effort, By the Sea, starring alongside her husband, Brad Pitt.

We're hoping the third time's the charm for the acclaimed actress, who despite showing promise in her previous filmmaking ventures, didn't find much success with either film. For By the Sea, which she wrote, directed and stars in, the premise feels far more personal.

Everything about this film holds great promise. A relationship drama set in France in the 1970s, Angelina wrote the film thinking it would never be made, giving her more freedom with the project. We're expecting some intense chemistry from the »

Handycam Horror: Top 5 Found Footage Films

20 October 2015 10:05 AM, PDT

The found footage scares are on our way with the latest entry into the frightening Paranormal Activity franchise.  With Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, the cameras are once again set to record every ghastly and ghoulish bump in the night as a new family is subjected to terrors hidden in the dark.

The franchise has found success largely in part to the scares that come in the pseudo-documentary found footage format.  The filmmaking style certainly lends itself well to the horror genre, many thanks in part to the granddaddy of found footage films, 1980’s grotesque low budget bloodbath, Cannibal Holocaust, which used elements of found footage within the traditional mockumentary-style narrative.  For every Project X, there’s a dozen more horror films trying to scare you with the found footage filmmaking technique.

Just in time for the Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension fright fest, we’ve set our sights on »

Bill Murray on karaoke with Zooey Deschanel and Rock the Kasbah

20 October 2015 8:00 AM, PDT

How did Bill Murray get tapped to play music manager Richie Lang in Rock the Kasbah?  “It involved singing which is a good way to get Bill to do anything,” says writer Mitch Glazer.  The actor made an entrance fit for a rock n’ roll god at July's Comic-Con, walking – nay, strutting – down the aisle to “Smoke on the Water” to kick of the first panel in Hall H.

Murray stars as Lang, a has-been music manager who discovers a teenage girl with an extraordinary voice while on tour in Afghanistan.  Recognizing an opportunity when he sees one, Lang takes the girl under his wing and heads to Kabul to compete on the popular reality show, Afghan Star.

Bill was the catalyst to get other actors including Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, and Bruce Willis to sign on for the film shoot in Morrocco according to Glazer.  Murray, who had the crowd in stitches, »

New The Force Awakens trailer breaks online as tickets go on sale

19 October 2015 8:17 PM, PDT

With two teaser trailers and a slew of five-second peeks behind us, it’s here: The first full trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The next interplanetary installment follows Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (Attack the Block’s John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Inside Llewyn Davis’ Oscar Isaac) as they meet-cute under the most unlikely of circumstances, and are thrown into the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance – or at least that’s what we think is happening. Plots details for The Force Awakens are being kept close to director J.J. Abrams’ chest.

Harrison FordCarrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill, who was mysteriously left off the official poster for The Force Awakens, reprise their roles for the film, which starts roughly thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Vin Diesel will rid the world of witches in The Last Witch Hunter clips & featurette

19 October 2015 1:48 PM, PDT

Vin Diesel is ready to rid the world of witches in The Last Witch Hunter, out in theatres this Friday.

Humanity is lucky to have Diesel’s heavy muscle on our side because ridding the world of witches and ending their reign of terror is not an easy task for a mere mortal.

To be a witch hunter, you need only one name.  Diesel is Kaulder, a centuries-old witch hunter cursed with immortality after killing the head Queen Witch hundreds of years ago.  If you’re going to call yourself a Queen Witch, you better have a few tricks in your cauldron, and we’re betting that the Queen herself is involved in the coven of witches that are trying to unleash the good old plague on modern-day New York City.  Throw in Michael Caine and Elijah Wood as priests and we’re all set for some pre-Halloween witchy fun. »
