Watch Extensive Talks With the Real-Life Journalists Behind ‘Spotlight’ and the Cast

10 November 2015 3:30 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Thomas McCarthy‘s new drama Spotlight tracks the Pulitzer-winning Spotlight team from the Boston Globe who, in 2002, published an article that blew the Roman Catholic Church’s abuse scandal wide open. As we noted in our review, the film is “not so much about the events covered but the covering of the events,” and “about the nuts and bolts of pre-internet age investigative reporting.”

So, pulling it back another layer, it’s just as fascinating to see the extensive process of McCarthy and co-writer Josh Singer on gathering and reaffirming facts for their screenplay, as well as how the actors worked with the real-life journalists to portray them. Our friend Mike Ryan published a great article today about their process and now we have extensive talks with different variations of the team.

First up, there’s a 30-minute talk with just journalists Marty Baron, Ben Bradlee Jr., Matt Carroll, Sacha Pfeiffer, »

Watch: Martin Scorsese, Christiane Kubrick & Jan Harlan Reflect On The Life And Career Of Stanley Kubrick In 55-Minute Talk

4 November 2015 8:05 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A year ago today, Warner Home Video released the incredible and sizable 10-disc Blu-ray collection, “Stanley Kubrick: The Masterpiece Collection.” It only seems fitting that we mark the anniversary with this hour-long Charlie Rose interview about the late, great Stanley Kubrick. Back in 2001, Rose sat down with Christiane Kubrick (the filmmaker’s wife of over 40-years until his death two years prior, in 1999), Martin Scorsese, and Jan Harlan, who executive produced Kubrick’s last four completed films and had just directed and released the documentary, “Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures.” The trio joined Rose to effuse about the writer-director and his masterful, inimitable filmography. And gush they did—with great reason. “One of his pictures, are equivalent to ten of somebody else’s,” Scorsese says in archival interview footage used in the special. Later during the interview, he admits that he often watches Kubrick’s films with the sound off. »

As Kelly told Rose (via Mediate), both she and Fox News felt it was bad for business to alienate Trump. "Neither one of us wanted any sort of a war with Donald Trump. We didn't think that benefitted the channel, we »

ABC’s David Muir Fights Back in TV-News Battle With NBC’s Lester Holt

28 July 2015 8:11 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The fight for evening-news dominance between ABC’s “World News Tonight” and NBC’s “NBC Nightly News” isn’t over yet — even if the NBC newscast has made great strides since Lester Holt officially took its reins in late June.

The ABC newscast, anchored by David Muir, won more of the viewers desired by advertisers in news programming than NBC’s in the five days between July 20 and July 24, according to Nielsen. It is the first time in five weeks that the ABC program has trumped NBC in this ratings category. “Nightly News” remained the most-watched evening newscast on broadcast TV, a position it has enjoyed for five consecutive weeks.

The two networks have been enveloped in a push-and-pull fracas for months. ABC’s newscast under Muir has made significant strides against NBC’s. Muir took over the anchor desk from Diane Sawyer in September of last year. As NBC »

John Oliver Is the Year’s Most Important Person in Television

All this week, the Vulture TV Awards honor the best television from the past year. The nominees are: John Oliver Greg Berlanti Shonda Rhimes Reed Hastings Michele Ganeless And the Most Important Person in TV is ... John Oliver When Charlie Rose presented John Oliver with a Peabody Award last month, he insisted that, no matter how often the HBO host protests, “He really is a journalist.” Rose’s characterization was accurate, of course — but also too narrow. Oliver isn’t just a comic who commits journalism from time to time. He’s not a purveyor of “fake news,” as Jon Stewart has mockingly called himself for years. Instead, perhaps without even realizing it, Oliver has emerged as a sort of modern mash-up of two of the 20th century’s biggest TV news icons: Walter Cronkite and Mike Wallace. Like Cronkite, he’s our trusted, truth-telling anchor. He uses his platform to educate and inform, »

Luke Owen with 5 things you didn’t know about the world of Jurassic Park

With Jurassic World now officially the fastest movie to reach the $1 billion mark (in just thirteen days!), it seems as though the world has gone back to 1993 and dino-mania is running wild once again.

To celebrate the success of the movie, we’ve looked back through the history books to bring you five things you may not know about the Jurassic Park franchise.

1. Harrison Ford was nearly Dr. Alan Grant

Harrison Ford has always had a great working relationship with Steven Spielberg and his partner in crime George Lucas. Not only was he the star of Spielberg’s ode to adventure serials of the 1930s and 40s, Raiders of the Lost Ark and its subsequent Indiana Jones sequels, but he was also featured in American Graffiti and the Star Wars trilogy, the products of George Lucas. »

Peabody Awards Celebrate Amy Schumer, John Oliver and Serious Newsgathering

Hundreds of celebrants braved a muggy night and a torrential downpour to acknowledge the recipients of the Peabody Awards, an eclectic bunch that ran the gamut from documentarian Alex Gibney to NBC News correspondent Richard Engel to “Serial” podcaster Sarah Koenig to comedians Amy Schumer and John Oliver.

The “Serial” award struck one of the most intriguing notes of the evening, as it is the first podcast to win a Peabody. Koenig, the force behind the series, told the crowd assembled at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan that much of the program was recorded in her basement, with blankets used to muffle unwanted sounds.

NPR, PBS and CNN were among the bigger winners of the night, though the event took on a different tone as host Fred Armisen moved from talking about real news programming to satire and parody. Tina Fey took the stage to present a Peabody — and a big mouth-kiss — to Amy Schumer, »

Woody Allen Regrets Agreeing To Create A Series For Amazon

15 May 2015 3:04 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

In January 2015, Amazon Studios announced a partnership with Woody Allen would that would result in the director’s first ever TV series. At the time, it seemed like a landmark deal that would bring Amazon its highest-profile original series yet, but from the sound of it, Allen is not too happy with the agreement. In an interview with Deadline, the legendary kvetcher explained how, because of his general unfamiliarity with TV, he has “regretted every second since I said Ok.”

Allen is a prolific director who has released 46 films across a 50-year career, but he has never made a TV series, and the transition is proving difficult:

“It’s been so hard for me. I had the cocky confidence, well, I’ll do it like I do a movie…it’ll be a movie in six parts. Turns out, it’s not. For me, it has been very, very difficult. »

It seems like Allen is definitely having second thoughts on the whole ordeal.

“I have regretted every second since I said Ok. It’s been so hard for me. I had the cocky confidence, well, I’ll do it like I do a movie…it’ll be a movie in six parts. Turns out, it’s not.
