Anton Yelchin’s Sci-Fi Short ‘Rise’ Being Developed Into Feature-Length Movie

“Hacksaw Ridge” producer Brian Oliver and Filmula’s Johnny Lin are developing a feature-length version of the dystopian short “Rise,” which starred the late Anton Yelchin.
The five-minute short, directed by David Karlak, takes place in a world where man’s attempt to create artificial intelligence has spun wildly out of control, leading to a war between man and machine. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton wrote the script for the short.
Oliver and Lin will fully finance and produce the feature film. They obtained the rights through Warner Bros., where the project had been set up initially, in the hopes of developing a franchise.
Lin is an executive producer on Tom Cruise’s upcoming crime thriller “American Made.” Oliver received a best picture Oscar nomination as a producer of “Black Swan,” and also produced “Black Mass,” “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” and “Everest.” He’s the founder of Cross Creek »

Seven years ago, moviegoers welcomed Saw 3D – otherwise known as The Final Chapter – as the last hurrah for Lionsgate’s iconic horror franchise. But as time wore on, James Wan and other creatives involved in the stomach-churning series started to hint that Saw 3D signaled a temporary hiatus, rather than a definitive conclusion.
Fast forward to now and we stand on the verge of Saw: Legacy, Michael and Peter Spierig’s franchise revival that’s set to reinvent the horror saga with a different storyline and new cast of characters – two of which will be played by Laura Vandervoort and Hannah Anderson. Legacy won’t forget its roots, though. Waking up to the news of a celebrity’s death is never a good way to start the day, especially one as talented as Bill Paxton. The actor has died at 61, and his colleagues in Hollywood have already taken to social media to remember the star of “Big Love,” “Aliens” and “Titanic,” among many others. The Emmy-nominated actor, who was currently starring in CBS’ adaptation of Training Day, died due to complications from an unspecified surgery. Bill Paxton, the veteran actor who starred in Big Love and appeared in films like Aliens, Twister and Apollo 13, died Saturday following complications from surgery. He was 61.

The opening fifteen minutes of “The Queen of Spain” promise a delightfully retrograde romp back in time to the Technicolor pleasures of that golden moment in the mid-1950s when Hollywood came to Spain. Glamorous movie stars, blacklisted writers, campy production designers, fabulous sets, and hunky grips all coming together to make movies and snub their noses at Generalissimo Franco. Then the plot kicks in, and it becomes clear Fernando Trueba is having so much fun revisiting characters from 1998’s “The Girl of Your Dreams” that he’s forgotten how to build a story out of multiple strands and make it all work. Penélope Cruz is always irresistible and the cast of Spanish greats know how to chew the scenery, but this overlong semi-farce with serious overtones seems mostly designed for the local blue-rinse crowd.

Later this week, Predrag Antonijevic's Ghost of New Orleans will be released theatrically and on several other platforms like VOD and Digital HD. In it, two cops use an abandoned house as a stake-out location, only to be contacted by the ghost of a woman who was murdered there, urging them on to solve her crime as well. It sounds like an interesting premise, and with a castlist including Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard, Lake Bell and Cary Elwes you'd suspect it would have been a bit quicker to get to the screen, seeing as how its shoot had finished in 2010 already (and its world premiere was in 2011). Ah well, producers run into problems sometimes, and judging by some Very angry on-line comments, these...

Exclusive: Paul Becker directs the story of a homeless dancer and his brother.
Premiere Entertainment Group (Peg) has acquired international sales rights to the family holiday film Breaking Brooklyn.
Louis Gossett Jr and newcomer Colin Critchley, Nathan Kress and Madeleine Mantock star in the story about a homeless young dancer and his brother who are taken in by an old Broadway showman when their father is arrested.
When one of the young men learns that their new guardian could lose his theatre, they enter a dance contest to save it.

Laura Vandervoort and Hannah Anderson have become the first actors announced for Lionsgate’s “Saw: Legacy,” the eighth film in the horror franchise.
The film — the first “Saw” title in seven years — is directed by the sibling team of Peter and Michael Spierig from a script by Pete Goldfinger, Josh Stolberg, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell. Producers are Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules, the trio that has produced all eight films.
Lionsgate has long specialized in genre fare such as the “Saw” franchise, produced by Twisted Pictures. The original “Saw” cost $1.2 million in 2004 and was Wan’s feature film directorial debut from a screenplay by Whannell with Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Monica Potter, Michael Emerson, Ken Leung, Tobin Bell, and Whannell starring.
The seven “Saw” films grossed more than $870 million worldwide combined.

As part of Fan Appreciation Month at Screen Junkies, the YouTube channel has released an Honest Trailer for the 1987 classic “The Princess Bride,” starring Robin Wright and Cary Elwes.
Unlike many other Honest Trailers, Screen Junkies actually praises the “action-comedy-romance-drama-kids movie for adults” by calling it “the best sappy, swashbuckling, medieval love story ever made.”
The video begins by attempting to explain the narrative, describing it as “a real movie about a made-up book, based on a real book about the same made-up book that the real movie is based on.” Confusing, right?
