My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Friendship Games review – rehoofed high jinks

12 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A welcome peppy spirit animates these sleek replacements for the franchise’s original equine heroines

Shock news: our harsh corporate climate means the fey horses that dominated 1980s subcultural discourse have been quietly taken out back and “disappeared”, like their pit-pony predecessors. Their new, sleek embodiments are the Equestria Girls, an aspirational-representational band of prep-schoolers who retain the flowing manes of the franchise’s martyrs, but otherwise resemble angular anime princesses.

This third Eg instalment, pitting our heroines against a rival academy, remains obvious product, and its shrill voice work may place key friendship developments beyond the range of anyone older than nine. Still, some effort’s been made to offset the craven commercialism: it’s not unattractively designed, and its peppy collegiate spirit trumps the sappiness of Disney’s Tinkerbell spin-offs.

Documentary-maker Conor Horgan charts the progress of cheery stand-up/activist Panti Bliss as Ireland heads towards a kinder, more colourful future

Where the recent Dressed As a Girl tailed a variety of drag artists, Conor Horgan’s documentary pursues just one – stand-up/activist Rory O’Neill, Aka Panti Bliss – in order to describe a wider, often haphazard push for acceptance. As late as January 2014, O’Neill’s primetime chatshow appearance sparked a major public row that engendered Panti’s most outspoken incarnation yet.

New Relativity Investor to Pump $29 Million Into Bankrupt Company

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In more than a decade running an entertainment company in Hollywood, Ryan Kavanaugh has repeatedly defied predictions of the demise of his Relativity Media, finding new investors when the company’s finances appeared most grim. Kavanaugh seems to have done it again this week, when one investor belatedly balked at making a $30 million infusion into the bankrupt entertainment company, only to be replaced by another partner.

A court filing in the wee hours of Thursday morning shows that Joseph G. Nicholas, founder of a Chicago firm that analyzes hedge funds, will pump $29 million into Relativity — money that will go to pay off senior lenders and allow Kavanaugh to maintain his leadership of the company, minus its television division. The same court papers show that Kavanaugh will commit $1 million toward completing the transaction.

The new cash arrives only a few days after VII Peaks Capital of Orinda, Calif. privately expressed reservations about re-upping with Relativity, »

The One Rule Quentin Tarantino Has On Every Film Set

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It’s safe to assume that Quentin Tarantino is quite a stickler on set. Sure, he certainly allows creative freedom to run wild so that his actors and crew can reach their zenith, but all of this must still be done in a forthright and professional manner. Which is why I think we can all get on board with a certain on-set rule Qt insists everyone involved in his productions must follow: no mobile phones. Christoph Waltz revealed to Playboy that Quentin Tarantino is adamant no one brings their mobile phones on set with them. Waltz, who is currently doing the rounds promoting his turn in Spectre, admitted that Tarantino is very strict with this policy, leaving very little leeway for his cast and crew. Waltz explained: Quentin has this strict rule, wholeheartedly, with emphasis and vehemently, and I totally subscribe to it: No cell phones on the set. »

Anthony Mackie Doesn’t Think ‘Black Panther’s’ Director Needs to be Black

While promoting film “Our Brand is Crisis,” Mackie, who plays Captain America’s friend and fellow villain-thwarter Falcon, said he didn’t think the director needed to be black.

“I don’t think it’s important at all,” he said to the Daily Beast. “As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit!”

Mackie went on to say he doesn’t think race or gender should come into play when choosing a director.

“The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice. I think men can direct women, »

Jeremy Renner Says It’s Not His Job to Help Female Co-Stars Negotiate Salaries

Jeremy Renner won’t be standing with his female co-stars in fighting for equal pay.

His “American Hustle” co-star Jennifer Lawrence recently penned an essay slamming the gender pay inequality in Hollywood. Several A-listers, including her other “Hustle” co-star and frequent collaborator, Bradley Cooper, have voiced their support.

“That’s not my job,” Renner told Business Insider when asked if he would be willing to negotiate alongside his female co-stars. “I don’t know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff.”

Although he supports actresses’ efforts to fill the gender gap, he said he’s more focused on honing his craft.

“I’m a performer and I know human behavior,” he added. “When it comes to that sort of stuff, I let other people deal with that. I do what I’m good at, »
