Microsoft provides additional detail on Lumia 950 and 950XL cameras

Polarr releases Photo Editor 3 with new features, interface improvements

Polarr has released Photo Editor 3, the third version of its lightweight photo editing software. The new version brings with it support for using a mouse and a touchscreen, as well as a new user interface, adjustment sliders, photo editing guides, and other features. Read more

Wide angle: Sigma's new Art lens is fastest 20mm in the world

Lens manufacturer Sigma has introduced a new lens to its Art range of premium optics that it claims is the fastest 20mm in the world. The new 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art  is designed for full frame cameras and will be available in mounts for Canon EF, Nikon F and Sigma models. Read more

JPEG Committee contemplates adding DRM to image format

Change may come soon for the web's most widely adopted image format. Earlier this week at a meeting in Brussels, the JPEG Committee discussed adding a DRM (Digital Rights Management) security feature to the regular JPEG image format. Read more

DJI introduces stabilized Osmo Gimbal handle with 4K 12MP camera

DJI, the maker of Phantom drones, has introduced a stabilized handheld 4K video system that uses a gimbal head to produce smooth video footage. The DJI Osmo is a handle-mount with a 3-axis head that senses movement and cancels out sudden jerks and bumps to ensure the camera moves slowly and the footage looks professional. Read more

Save the dates: PhotoPlus Expo next week in New York

Next week sees the return of PhotoPlus Expo, the largest photography and imaging show in the United States. Held October 21-24 in the Javits Center in New York City, PPE 2015 will play host to more than 100 educational seminars, Photo Walks and Master Classes, and over 250 exhibitors displaying thousands of products. As usual, DPReview will be at the event, reporting from the show floor. Read more

New York, New York: Low light Sony a7S II stills and 4K sample videos from the Big Apple

The Sony a7S II looks a lot like its full-frame Alpha mirrorless counterparts, but behind the familiar face are some important new features - namely, the ability to record 4K video internally. Its specifications are tuned to videography, with features like Full HD recording at 120fps, but its low light stills potential is equally compelling. Sony a7R II uncompressed Raw firmware update available October 19

Last month Sony promised to address a key concern of a7-series camera owners with a firmware update adding 14-bit uncompressed Raw support. The a7R II was named as the first in line to get the update, and Sony has confirmed that the firmware version will come Monday, October 19. Read more

Lexar to launch 128GB capacity Professional 2000x SDXC card

Lexar recently introduced a 128GB version of its Professional 2000x SDXC UHS-II memory card. Once it launches, this new version will be the fastest 128GB memory card to utilize the Ultra High Speed II, UHS Speed Class 3 standard. The card is built to support capturing 4K video and other demanding content. Surprise! Sony announces RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF

Sony has announced its Cyber-shot RX1R II, an update to 2013's RX1 and RX1R full-frame, fixed-lens compact cameras. The RX1R II brings a 42.4 Megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor borrowed from the a7R II, 35mm F2 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens, retractable viewfinder, variable low-pass filter and greatly improved autofocus. Read more

ZEISS announces Otus 1.4/28, third lens for Otus series

German optical manufacturer Zeiss has announced it is to introduce a wide angle to its Otus family of lenses designed for full frame SLR cameras. The Zeiss Otus 1.4/28 is a 28mm lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4, and will be available with ZE and ZF.2 mounts for Canon EOS and Nikon F cameras. Read more

Something special: Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 and SP 45mm F1.8 real-world galleries

Tamron seemed to have taken a cue from Sigma when it launched the SP 35mm and 45mm F1.8, following that company's lead in offering fast, high quality fixed focal length lenses. Designed for full frame camera bodies, the SP 35mm and 45mm boast weather-proofing, fluorine coatings and close-focusing abilities not usually found at these focal lengths. Lomography launches Lomo’instant Wide camera

Lomography has introduced the Lomo’instant Wide camera. Using Fujifilm Instax Wide film, the camera offers a 35mm equivalent lens and Auto, Bulb, and 1/30sec Fixed Shutter Speed modes. Features cater to those who want to take a little more control over their instant prints, including a multi-exposure button and a lens cap that functions as a shutter remote control. RX aeternus? Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 II review

The Sony RX10 II is the follow-up to a camera we already thought quite highly of. The Canon EOS M10 makes its debut with a new collapsible 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS kit lens, taking up residence below the more advanced EOS M3 in that company's mirrorless lineup. A replacement for the M2, the M10 offers an 18MP CMOS sensor, 3" 1.04M dot tilting touch screen LCD, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and 1080/30p video recording. Read more

ZEISS goes wide with Loxia 21mm F2.8 for Sony E-mount

ZEISS has introduced the 21mm F2.8 to its Loxia lineup for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, joining the 35mm F2 and 50mm F2. Like its siblings, the 2.8/21 allows the user to de-click the aperture ring for video recording. Read more

Adobe issues Lightroom 6.2 apology and update

Adobe has issued an apology over the 'significant crashing bug' introduced in Lightroom 6.2. The latest version of the software was released last Monday, and brought with it a redesigned import experience. That new experience, unfortunately, also introduced instability into Lightroom and removed some import functions; users reported issues with the software crashing and running poorly. Read more

Voigtlander announces three new extreme wide-angle lenses for Sony E-mount

Voigtländer has introduced three new lenses that will be released in Spring 2016: the 10mm F5.6 Hyper-Wide-Heliar, 12mm F5.6 Ultra-Wide-Heliar, and 15mm F4.5 Super-Wide-Heliar. All three lenses will feature a Sony E-mount for use with full-frame Sony cameras without an adapter. Read more

Behind the Scenes: Recording a music video with Samsung NX cameras

Seattle-based band Ever So Android are an indie rock trio who have played all over the western USA. Light L16 packs 16 cameras into a single portable body

US-based startup Light has officially introduced its L16, a portable device packed with 16 individual cameras, ten of which capture an image at the same time at different fixed focal lengths. The resulting photograph is a composite of all the individual images combined, with a final resolution of up to 52 megapixels. An earlier prototype of this camera was shown off this past April. Sony spins off image sensor division to form its own company

Sony Corporation is to split the part of its business that makes imaging sensors away from the Devices segment that it currently comes under, to form its own company called Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation. Sony has said that the degree of autonomy that the new company will enjoy will allow it to react more quickly to changing market forces and will encourage the business to grow more quickly. Manfrotto launches Pixi Evo mini tripods for DSLRs

Manfrotto has launched the Pixi Evo, a miniature lightweight tripod with two-section legs and five adjustable steps. The Pixi Evo represents a design update over the original Pixi mini tripod, and is designed, in part, to support entry-level DSLRs with large lenses. Read more

Adobe Camera Raw 9.2 adds local dehaze

Adobe has released Camera Raw 9.2, introducing a local version of its new dehaze adjustment. ACR 9.2 also adds support for the DxO ONE, though not for the camera's SuperRAW files. Other cameras supported by the update are the Olympus OM-D E-M10 II, Sony Alpha 7S II and Leica S (Typ 007). Read more

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 comes with larger screen and more power

Today Microsoft not only launched two new smartphones with PureView camera, but also the latest incarnation of its high-end Surface Pro tablet capable of running full desktop apps, such as Adobe Photoshop CC or Lightroom. Read more

Project Apollo Archive uploads more than 8400 NASA images to Flickr

Project Apollo Archive has uploaded a massive library of high-resolution photos taken during NASA's moon missions and related training exercises. More than 8,400 photos have been published, including scans of original photos taken by astronauts' Hasselblad cameras and some processed photos from film magazines. Read more

Ricoh offers limited edition GR II kit to mark 10 years of digital GR cameras

The forthcoming Ricoh GR II is set to also be available in a special limited edition 'Premium' kit that has been announced by the company to mark the 10th birthday of the first digital version of the famous GR film bodies. The kit will come in an aluminum case and will include the GV-1 external viewfinder as well as the GW-3 wide angle converter that uses a 0.75x magnification to turn the camera’s 28mm lens into what seems like a 21mm super wide. Corel introduces three new Pinnacle Studio 19 applications

Corel has introduced a trio of new versions of its video editing software applications: Pinnacle Studio 19 Ultimate, Pinnacle Studio 19 Plus, and Pinnacle Studio 19. A couple new features have been added to the software, including a new Multi-Camera Editor in each version of the application. In addition, the latest version offers support for 6th-generation Intel Core i7 processors. Read more
