DxO ONE now available in 10 European countries

The DxO One camera is now available to customers in Europe. The company had announced at the beginning of September that it would launch its camera for European customers in October, having first launched the product for US buyers last month. The DxO ONE was first unveiled back in June.

The company announced this morning that the ONE is now available in 10 European countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. One is priced at £449 including VAT in the UK, and €599 in the other nine regions. The company plans to launch the camera in other European countries in the coming months.

DxO One is a Lightning-equipped camera designed for use with the iPad and iPhone; it features a 32mm equivalent F1.8 lens and 20.2MP 1”-type CMOS sensor.

I don't get this at all. The Qx1, 10, 100 were all crap per reviews here but this is the best thing since sliced bread..... and only works on the iphone?
Give us a break.

How do you remain connected to your local wifi network and the internet when using your QX1xx with a wifi-only iPad?

As far as I can see, you have to disconnect every time from your LAN and so lose communication with the rest of the world for the duration in order to connect to the camera's own wifi network every time you just want to take a picture.

The handling (2-handed when attached to your i.Phone) is worse, because the lightning connector quite easy gets loose and then you'd drop your expensive i.Phone

Apart from that, he still managed to take some nice samples. The brickwork in that white public building is first rate, where it's totally lost on the iPhone image.

Hopefully everyone will stop comparing against the iPhone camera itself, and more against 1" competitiors like the Nikon 1, G 7X and RX100.

I don't know if iPhone users would really love to buy a 600$ AddOn camera, i'd prefer if so then something small like the RX100 Series, or for my personal taste way better, the LX-100. My go-everywhere cam is my NEX-6 with Kitlens or NEX-5 with that lens, or i do use a manual focus 35/2.8 prime attached to it via focal reducer (Speed booster)

If i need badly something really small for the unexpected shot, i put my EX-1 Samsung into my jacket...1/1.7" sensor, RAW...fast lens, good enough for that task.

Except I don't see it as an add-on.

I see the iOS device as the add-on attachment.

I don't even see the constant fixation on iPhone users as the sole purchasers.

Can you attach an iPad Pro to your RX100 to give it a whopping 12.9" retina touch screen and iOS interface control and full connectivity?

Or instantly switch to add an ultra-thin 5th gen iPod Touch with retina screen for on-the-go?

What does the iOS device add to this camera? EVERYTHING.

Start with RX100 can't edit videos in iMovie and the list goes on.

And then just as big a deal is what does the iOS device take away when you detach it? EVERYTHING.

Can you detach the RX100 lens and sensor from its rear screen and controls and go 'stealth' for the ultimate street shooter etc?

So the way I see it, they're not even in the same league. To me, people saying they'd rather choose the RX100 for the same price is like old film cameras, still good but the format's had its day.

Well, horses for courses...i'd say. I don't own a iPhone, but android, and i don't need both of it. Besides that, i love to to photograph with an OVF, preferred, and EVF...still both better then with just a LCD Display as Viewfinder. The DxO One will find it's customers, or better said - the customers would find it...but into the end, for a prime lens 1" sensor AddHoc Cam, 600 bucks is somehow too expensive. You can get a beginner DSLR for that.

But like i've said - different kind of users, and different needs.
I've found it too techy, geeky style...more for hipsters, or guys like you who just can get good use out of it - and that's completely fine this way. :-)

I do prefer to carry a small compact, a small system camera, or to prefer my DSLR depending on the situation.

Everybody's happy - as there are choices, and different users. :)

Other European countries in the next few months - what about the rest of the world? I've been waiting since 2007 for this camera so its starting to get frustrating being told now to wait even longer while it's available to others.

I would have bought it already if I could.

I would have bought it back in 2007 as the only camera that integrates into the Mac/iOS envirnment.

Eight years later I would buy it for the same reason as the only camera that integrates into the Mac/iOS envornment.

Finally.

Name a single other camera in the world with a lightning connector. Not one.

Which is quite a bizarre situation, don't you think? 'iPhone accessory' has been a licence to print money, yet every one of them in their wisdom has decided to compete AGAINST the iPhone camera instead with their Samsung Android cameras and Nikon Coolpixes.

Anyway, no need to ask me. This very article is answering your question - people must be buying it in droves because my waiting time has just gotten months longer.

Instead of the expected worldwide release this month after the US release, changing it to just a limited number of selected countries indicates to me they have been caught out by unexpected demand and are short on stock.

That SuperRAW format that they're all placing so much importance on to diss this camera? As if it's this camera's sole purpose for being?

It's not even listed on the official DxO ONE product page as a feature. And never has been since I've been looking at it.

As far as I can see, it's only mentioned once as an asterisked footnote in the RAW comparison score pop-up link - because it's a desktop app feature, not a camera feature. All the camera does is just takes a burst of 4 RAW files, and that's it.

Tapping into the iphone market is one thing...
But from your encyclical, I understand you take this product seriously. I just cannot believe it.
The phone pretty much killed the compact camera market. This add-on does not seem like its going to resurrect it. Historically camera add-ons have not done so well and the fact that japanese manufacturers have not jumped on this tells me they know better. I guess the exorbitant price factors in the logistical nightmare of supporting and replacing all the broken dongles in this camera if it ends up selling in large numbers.

I'm not 'the iPhone market' so have a rethink about your assumptions as to who wants this camera.

In fact, I won't be using it with my iPhone. Out and about I plan to shoot blind as I did with my GRD III, screen-off.

When not out and about: iPad - HUGE retina touch screen on my camera!

I'm also not being encyclical. I have no desire to convince you or anyone else to buy this camera - go right ahead and buy an RX100 if that's what you prefer. Just answering your question as to why *I* want it and won't let the overwhelming negative DPR naysayers sway me from it. Not even your dongle-breaking FUD.

Funny you should say this, as the reason I want this camera most of all is I'm tired of wasting money on camera after camera.

I now want one decent pocketable carry-everywhere camera that will last me at least the next 5 years minimum, maybe much longer. This one will have firmware updates for its lifespan, not just the bundled desktop apps and its own iOS app but also huge feature-enhancing iOS and OSX updgrades for free.

An example of exactly what I mean - I'm still waiting for this camera and bundled DxO apps as I mention elsewhere, but I believe the release of OSX El Capitan last week makes for these standalone DXO apps to work now as integrated Photos extensions on your desktop linked with what you do on iOS 9 - it's already upgrading now even before I buy it.

Compare with the Sony RX100 if you asked for the firmware to be updated to make the video button selectable, sure Sony listened - and sold that update to you for another $600 in the RX100 II. And so on every 12 months..

Firmware cannot update the lens or sensor. An RX100 or G7X will last you at least as long as this gimmick, and is an infinitely smarter choice.

I have to agree with Sigma82. Come on, this thing is made by DxO. DxO is collabarating with dpreview. The very very least you can do when making publicity for this gadget is at least mention this very clearly in the article, in bold. Because there IS a commercial interest.
Robin Wong does this right, every time.

Together with the heavy promotion of an event which is in the USA, while this website is visited by a worldwide community, makes a bit there isn't a lot to enjoy here lately.
It might be me, but it is a bit reflected in the number of comments (well agreed, not that I would have *wanted* to read 60% of the comments that aren't written now, but that's a different point ;) )

According to your logic, a website with an international readership can't promote an event that will be taking place in a single country. How many events that you know of are worldwide events?

let me make 2 comments. Firstly we are only 'collaborating' with DXO in the loosest possible sense. We do not have (nor have we ever had) ANY commercial relationship with them. We use their publicly available data for some of our phone and lens reviews, like many other sites. Secondly, our event is being streamed live here on the site, and we have 32+ hours of programming from almost 50 world-class photographers and experts, all completely free to watch live or later. This is not a purely 'local' event.

1. The very fact that this collaboration itself isn't mentioned explicitly when presenting a device that IS of commercial interest for that collaborator just leaves a very bad impression. There is always a priority choice: -providing free extra publicity for your collaborator - or: -emphasize your impartiality. What will be more beneficial in the long run?

2. I stand corrected. I didn't know. On the front page it is primarily promoted as a Seattle event. Since the 'free tickets' exclude transportation costs I never looked into it.

But enough sour grapes. I am sure there will be enough to enjoy here after October 7. :)

When you cite DxO results, you are also collaborating with DxO in the same way DPreview is. Do you all your posts mentioning DxO also have a disclaimer saying that you sometimes cite their results?

The overwhelming and unsubstantiated bias I see is not in the DPR articles, it's in the comments.

I would prefer it if all the negative naysayers and FUD spreaders dissing this camera in every article so far would disclose whether they are Android phone owners.
