Not only that, their rating system marks don't take into account many other things that impact images.

Most people purchasing the higher-end FF Nikons stick with Nikon glass when they can. Maybe manual focus Zeiss lenses sometimes.

Improved coatings, ED glass, molded aspherical surfaces are all contributing to lens improvements. That, and in-camera correction.
