Director Robert Zemeckis and producer Jack Rapke were on hand Thursday to introduce “The Walk” as the opening film of The Tokyo International Film Festival.

The U.S. pair did the honors at the Toho Cinemas theater in the Roppongi Hills entertainment and shopping complex, launching the 28th edition of an event which runs to Oct. 31.

Though Bryan Singer is chairman of the competition jury, there were fewer that normal Hollywood names on the red carpet. Helen Mirren appeared to represent “Woman In Gold”  together with director Simon Curtis. Hilary Swank was on hand for “You’re Not You.” Both films play in Tokyo’s Special Screenings section for films set to open in Japan in the next months.

The Nippon contingent was especially large, no surprise given the nearly 100 Japanese films scheduled to screen in all festival sections, the largest number ever. Among those drawing the most local media »

Robert Zemeckis: Tokyo Tightrope Artist

21 October 2015 3:10 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Holding a press conference on the 47th floor of a Tokyo skyscraper, on October 21, 2015, it was unclear whether the setting was more appropriate for Robert Zemeckis to be selling “The Walk” or reviewing the predictions made in “Back To The Future.”

Officially, the “Forrest Gump” filmmaker was on duty to tub-thump “The Walk,” which is set as the opening film of the Tokyo International Film festival. But with Letterman-like looks and a quick-fire growl, Zemeckis appeared at ease in either role.

(Oct. 21, 2015 is the date that that Marty McFly and Dr Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown chose to travel forward in time to in “Back To The Future”.)

Zemeckis ruled out any future additions to “Back.” “It is a well-made trilogy, and will stay that way,” he said. But willing to play some things forward, he expressed optimism for the future of cinema.

“I’m very hopeful for the future of cinema, »

Brad Pitt To Star In Untitled Romantic Thriller From Robert Zemeckis

6 February 2015 12:36 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Paramount Pictures has announced today that one of their next top-shelf projects has locked in Brad Pitt to star with Robert Zemeckis set to direct. A co-op production that also includes Gk Films and New Regency, the movie has been described as a “sweeping romantic thriller” based on an original screenplay by Steve Knight.

For the screenwriter, this will no doubt come as welcome news. Knight’s latest theatrical title – Seventh Son – hasn’t exactly lit up the critical barometer nor the box office. The fact that two of the industry’s biggest names, Pitt and Zemeckis, are making one of his scripts is a big deal. After all, he also penned Locke and Eastern Promises, both solid character-based pieces, so this new talented crew ought to steer his newest script back on course.

Aside from the fact that the film is described as “epic” and “sweeping,” there’s not much else to go on. »
