SourceForge.net downtime? What it means and what happened?

Perhaps you have noticed since Thursday (July 16th) that people were unable to download Tiki or browse/commit/fetch code from our SVN repository or send and read messages in our mailing lists. It is a result of SourceForge.net downtime (where our code is hosted and so are many other Open Source projects) caused by a storage fault:
Slashdot Media wrote: The Slashdot Media sites experienced an outage commencing last Thursday. We responded immediately and confirmed the issue was related to filesystem corruption on our storage platform. This incident impacted all block devices on our Ceph cluster. We consulted with our storage vendor when forming our next steps. We have since been working 24×7 on data restoration, data validation, and service recovery. Now, at least, the installation packages can be downloaded again from http://sourceforge.net/projects/tikiwiki/files/ Unfortunately, the restoration process is taking far too long and not just us, but a lot of projects are asking when the SVN repositories and mailing lists will be back online... To be honest (and unfortunately): We don't know. All we can do is to wait and watch the updates in the SF.net blog and hope it will be back soon. Ideas have been floated on how to manage similar situations better in the future (e.g. have backup servers for downloading of Tiki packages, move to GIT, etc.)... We will discuss more about the Sourceforge outage at our upcoming BBB roundtable meeting on Thursday. Everyone is welcome to join us there! |
