Does Your Student/Child Have a Portfolio of Work?
THE MOVIE below (17 minutes)

The other day I had a conversation with a parent and, naturally, the subject turned to education, specifically the cost of higher ed and does it deliver on the promise.

I said something like, "plus so many of these students are coming out with degrees and they don't even know how to make (do) anything."  The parent gave me dead eyes, not understanding what I was talking about, and I wasn't sure how to "explain" it in a few sound bites that we had left before running in different directions.

"The Return of the Hand ---
I'm a Maker . . . . and here's what I do."

Well, folks, here is now a "movie," We Are Makers, which is well-worth the watch.  Some thoughts:

Making is fundamental to who we are.

Dales Dougherty, founder of the Maker Movement, talks about how we often don't
make the connection between making, whether it be robotics or weaving.

Making initiates us into communities of people, whether in-person or on-line. It's a "social currency, a network."  It's a "return of the hand!"  Here's the video set-up:

We Are Makers tells the story of the Maker Movement.

It's the story not of tools but of people. A publisher. An entrepreneur.
A design professor. A middle school teacher. Two museum educators.
And a creative director.

Each provides an important viewpoint on why new technologies and
communities of making are bringing us back to something deeply human.
