Katrina – 10 Years Later
I was privileged to meet many of those first responders whose heroic feats were featured in Paratus 14:50, and I saw first-hand the raw emotions still evident from the historic number of lives saved and the unforgettable tragedy of lives lost during Katrina. While our objective was to save everyone by any and all means, 1,883 people perished and Katrina still conjures thoughts of loss and mourning – certainly not an event to celebrate.

In a ceremony held last week, Master Chief Petty Officer James Clemens, who retired from the Coast Guard with 30 years of service, relinquished his title of the Coast Guard’s Ancient Keeper to Lathrop during a special ceremony, which followed the station’s change of watch.

The Coast Guard’s commitment to cyberspace as an operating domain requires a comprehensive strategy that provides a clear framework for mission execution. Today, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft released his new Cyber Strategy, which aligns with the Department of Homeland Security’s and Department of Defense’s plans and will guide the service’s efforts in the cyber domain for the next 10 years.

The Coast Guard’s Missing Link
Currently, the 1960s-era 210-foot and the 1980s-era 270-foot medium endurance cutters are the link between the Coast Guard’s national security cutters and fast response cutters. However, this link is under untenable strain, characterized by decreasing readiness and skyrocketing maintenance costs.
