Noel faces The Banker

Channel 4

Noel Edmonds gets the chance to open the red boxes later as he sits in the hot seat for a special 10-year anniversary episode of Deal or No Deal.

Comic Sarah Millican takes over hosting duties as Noel feels the pressure of trying to win up to £500,000 for his chosen charity.

Millican herself took part in a charity version of the Channel 4 show, dealing at £20,000.

"I was thrilled to be asked to guest host Deal or No Deal on such a momentous occasion," she said. "Stepping in to the shoes of a TV legend like Noel Edmonds was a bit daunting.

"But really, I was just happy it wasn't me playing the game again. I don't think my stress levels could take another go."

Sarah Millican Hijacks Deal or No Deal is on Channel 4 at 20:00 BST. Here's a brief taste of what's in store.

Toronto round-up

Our intrepid reporter in Toronto, Genevieve Hassan, has finished her stint at the Canadian city's film festival, where she rubbed shoulders with many stars from in front of and behind the camera.

Naturally she kept a journal of all the goings-on, from red carpet glitz to serious discussions about the future of film-making.

Taken heads for TV

Deadline

Getty Images

Liam Neeson's Taken franchise is set to be made into a TV series, focusing on the early life of central character Bryan Mills.

There's not much chance Neeson will be involved in the project, as it will be a prequel to the films and see the protagonist before he has a wife and children.

Luc Besson, who created the movies, has persuaded NBC to order a full season before a pilot has been filmed.

According to Deadline, the series "will bend time as it will be set in [the] modern day, not decades in the past".

Operatic makeover for Tintin

AFP

Comic book hero Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy are starring in an open-air opera in Belgium.

The Castafiore Emerald, a musical adaptation of the 1963 adventure by Belgian author Herge, made its debut on Thursday at the Chateau de la Hulpe, just outside Brussels.

Produced by Belgium's Opera For All, the lyrical comedy features such much-loved characters as Captain Haddock and the Thom(p)son Twins.

The plot sees opera diva Bianca Castafiore pay a visit to Marlinspike Hall - the captain's country retreat - and involves the subsequent theft of her beloved jewellery.

He's in-Vin-cible!

"Hang on a minute, lads," said Michael Caine at the end of The Italian Job. "I've got a great idea."

Not half as great, we'd wager, as casting Vin Diesel as a sword-wielding crusader in an effects-packed fantasy called (drum roll, please)... The Last Witch Hunter.

Sir Michael joins Diesel, Elijah Wood and Game of Thrones' Rose Leslie in a film that, if nothing else, provides an answer to at least one vexing question. Namely: what would  Vin Diesel look like with a Gandalf beard?

Daltrey diagnosed with meningitis

AP

The Who have cancelled their entire US tour after Roger Daltrey was diagnosed with viral meningitis.

The band had already pulled four gigs earlier this week, but have now revealed doctors have ordered Daltrey to rest.

"We are very sorry to disappoint our fans in this way," Daltrey said in a statement. "For the last four weeks, I have been in and out of the hospital and have been diagnosed with viral meningitis.

"I am now on the mend and feeling a lot better but I am going to need a considerable time to recover.

"The doctors tell me I will make a complete recovery, but that I should not do any touring this year."

Guitarist Pete Townshend said they hoped to reschedule the tour for next spring.

Clarkson to guest host on HIGNFY

BBC

It's been confirmed that Jeremy Clarkson will be in the host's chair when Have I Got News for You returns to BBC One next month.

The former Top Gear host was due to serve as quiz-master in an edition of the last series, but opted to pull out in the wake of his highly publicised departure from the popular motoring programme.

Clarkson has filled in as host on the satirical quiz programme on several occasions, memorably drawing blood in 2008 when he threw a pen at Ian Hislop.

The new series of Have I Got News for You begins on 2 October.

Darcey looks to the future

Darcey Bussell took a break from Strictly Come Dancing earlier this week to join some young dancers hoping to follow in her illustrious footsteps.

The former ballerina has lent her name to a new bursary scheme organised by the Royal Academy of Dance that will enable budding hopefuls to compete in the prestigious Genee International Ballet Competition.

Biffy Clyro to headline Hogmanay

BBC

Biffy Clyro will headline Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations this year, it has been announced.

The band will be joined by Idlewild and Honeyblood in an all-Scottish line-up for the Concert in the Gardens.

Organisers said it was a "real coup" that Biffy Clyro would make their only live UK performance of the year at the event, which they last headlined in 2010.

Tickets for the concert go on sale next week.

Pinter classic gets anniversary staging

Getty Images/PA

Keith Allen, Gemma Chan and Spandau Ballet member Gary Kemp form part of the eye-catching cast assembled for a 50th anniversary production of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming.

Ron Cook and John Simm will also appear in Jamie Lloyd's revival of Pinter's dark masterpiece, which details the claustrophobic battle of wills that ensues when a philosophy professor returns to his family home with a new wife in tow.

Chan, so fine as 'synth' Anita in Channel 4's recent drama Humans, takes the pivotal role of Ruth, the only woman in the play and a part originally played on stage (and later on film) by Pinter's own wife, Vivien Merchant.

The Homecoming runs at London's Trafalgar Studios from 14 November to 13 February.

News Quiz, new era

BBC

Comedian Miles Jupp will be making his debut later as the new host of The News Quiz, Radio 4's perennially popular round-up of the week's current affairs.

Jupp, who first appeared as a panellist on the show in 2009, is taking over from Sandi Toksvig, who stepped down at the end of the last series after nine years as its presenter.

Susan Calman, Danny Finkelstein, Sarah Kendall and Mark Steel will be joining Jupp on Friday's series opener, which can be heard at 18:30 BST and afterwards on the iPlayer.

Toksvig, incidentally, popped up last night on BBC One's Question Time - a different kind of news quiz altogether.

Toronto withdraws Amis film

BBC

Two days before coming to a close, the Toronto Film Festival has taken the unusual step of withdrawing a title from its line-up after its director took legal action against its producers.

London Fields, a blackly comic mystery based on the 1989 novel by Martin Amis (pictured), was to have had its premiere later.

But festival organisers chose to cancel its screenings after director Matthew Cullen claimed the film's producers had added "incendiary imagery" without his approval.

Reviews of the film, which was shown to critics before its screenings were cancelled, have been decidedly mixed, with one pundit describing it as "car-crash film-making" and another calling it "a disgrace".

It's the second film to have had its Toronto airing pulled this year, following the earlier cancellation of a documentary about the recording of Aretha Franklin's 1972 album Amazing Grace.

Here's how organisers announced London Fields' no-show.

We have recently learned of a legal matter that has arisen between the director and the producers of the film London Fields. We have worked to make our festival a public showcase for creative expression through the moving image.

However, with uncertainty surrounding the creative vision of the version of the film scheduled to be screened on September 18th, we feel it is only appropriate that we remove this film from the Festival line-up."

West End War Horse to close

Brinkhoff Mogenburg

Puppet nag Joey may have to seek alternative employment following confirmation that the long-running West End production of War Horse is to be put out to pasture.

The show, the most successful play in the National Theatre's history, is to have its final performance at the New London Theatre on 12 March.

When it closes, the London production will have played more than 3,000 performances and have been seen by more than 2.7 million people.

Joey won't have to spend too long out of work, though, as the hit adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel will tour the UK from autumn 2017.

Find out what else the National Theatre has in store in 2016.

On the Rhodes to success

BBC

How do you become a singer if you're afraid to sing? That was the dilemma once faced by David Rhodes, a musician from Hertfordshire who now performs and records under his surname.

His fear of singing began at a young age, after he heard his voice on cassette. "I had a really high voice...," Rhodes told the BBC. "... and I just couldn't bear the sound of it."

After spending his teenage years playing in bands, he was finally persuaded to step behind the microphone and sing a Robert Johnson song at a party by his father.

The rest, as they say, is history, as this rendition of Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do on Radio 1's Live Lounge recently attests.

Rannazzisi adverts pulled

AP

A fast food chain has dropped adverts featuring comedian and actor Steve Rannazzisi, who has admitted lying about being in the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Rannazzisi has apologised for the fabrication after a newspaper investigation revealed he was not working on the 54th floor of the South Tower as he often claimed.

Buffalo Wild Wings had originally said it was considering its future with the TV star. Now, though, it has now pulled the ads, which were tied to his role as a fantasy football commissioner on FXX's comedy The League.

The company said: "Upon careful review, we have decided to discontinue airing our current television commercials featuring Steve Rannazzisi."

Comedy Central is still to decide what to do about its Rannazzisi special, Breaking Dad, which is to due to be broadcast in the US this weekend.

Barrymore the merrier

Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette walked a purple carpet on Thursday at the London premiere of Miss You Already, a comedy-weepie about two life-long friends whose relationship is tested when one of them is diagnosed with cancer.

Reuters/PA

Charlie's Angels star Barrymore appeared to have mislaid her feet as she posed for photographers - something that Morwenna Banks, the film's British screenwriter and the voice of Peppa Pig's Mummy Pig, avoided by sporting a tutu and bovver boot combo.

Singer Paloma Faith (above right) was also on hand to catch Catherine Hardwicke's film, which arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 25 September.
