In April 2005, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched a joint worldwide network of expertise on avian influenza (OFFLU) - expanded in 2009 to include all animal influenza - to support veterinary services in their efforts to reduce risks to animal and public health from animal influenza viruses
The animal health community will provide early recognition and characterisation of emerging influenza viral strains in animal populations, and effective management of known infections, thereby better managing the risk to human health and promoting global food security, animal health and welfare, and other community benefits derived from domestic animals and wildlife
