Canon has introduced its ME20F-SH multi-purpose camera - a black cube with an EF mount and the ability to capture video in near-darkness. With the ability to capture Full HD color video in light levels as low as 0.0005 lux and a top ISO of over 4 million, the ME20F-SH is well suited for surveillance and security as well as wildlife applications. We've been shooting with the Canon PowerShot G3 X for a few days now. Canon's latest high-end compact offers a 20MP sensor and 24-600mm equivalent zoom lens, with a touch-sensitive LCD screen and optional EVF. The G3 X occupies something of a niche in the long-zoom category, offering a longer lens than its 1-inch sensor competitors but without some of the extras, like a built-in viewfinder and 4K video. Kenko has introduced updated versions of its Teleplus teleconverters for lenses in the Canon EOS EF and EF-S fits with new circuitry that allows EXIF data from the lens in use to be recorded by the body. The Teleplus 2.0x HD DGX and 1.4x HD DGX converters use Hoya glass and offer full autofocusing facilities when matched with lenses with a wide enough maximum aperture. Read more

Canon has introduced a new printer that can print images directly from Instagram and other social networks. The PIXMA MG3620 Wireless Inkjet all-in-one printer works with the Canon PRINT app for iOS and Android to both access and print from Instagram accounts, as well as other online services like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, OneDrive, Evernote, Google Drive, Photobucket, and Dropbox. Canon has introduced its 430EX III-RT midrange Speedlite. This is the company's second flash to support radio-based wireless TTL, which offers longer ranges, more flexible positioning, and no line-of-sight requirement like traditional optical wireless flash systems. The 430EX III-RT is also faster, lighter and features refined rear controls, more custom settings, and a built-in catchlight panel. Read more

Canon made an announcement this week warning of counterfeit 600EX-RT flash units being sold as the real deal. Equally as disconcerting as the idea of being ripped off is that these counterfeits are also incredibly difficult to tell apart from the real thing. Read more
DxO has introduced OpticsPro 10.4.2, adding Raw support for Canon's EOS 5DS and 5DS R. Also added are 789 new camera/lens combination correction profiles. Updates for DxO FilmPack and DxO ViewPoint also make those applications fully compatible with Photoshop CC 2015. Read more
Tamron and Sigma have both announced updates for their lenses to provide full compatibility with Canon's EOS 5DS and 5DS R models. Both firmware updates refer to behavior in live view shooting, something that has also caused problems in the Rebel T6s and T6i. This suggests that Canon's latest models feature a change in the way they drive lenses. Read more
We've updated our Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R First Impressions to include studio test samples from final production versions of the cameras. The 5DS and 5DS R share a 50MP full-frame CMOS sensor and are identical in every way except for one: the 5DS contains an anti-aliasing filter, while the 5DS R has a self-canceling filter. While we've previously tested a beta version of the 5DS R, we've finally been able to put final production versions of the two cameras through our studio. Read more
Last night the Northern Lights tip-toed farther south than they usually do, and many regions of North America not accustomed to seeing them were treated to a light show. In hopes of catching it we hopped in the car with the Canon EOS 5DSR and headed away from the city lights. The Canon EOS Rebel T6i (750D) bears a passing resemblance to its Rebel T6s (760D) sibling, but it's a different enough camera to warrant a separate review. Although it shares the same 24.2MP APS-C sensor and 19-point all cross-type AF module as its more expensive sibling, its Hybrid CMOS AF III implementation lacks continuous AF in live view. Canon's external GPS receiver GP-E2 gets an update today to firmware 2.0, adding support for the Canon EOS Rebel T6s/T6i (760D/750D) and EOS 5DS/5DS R. The firmware update also fixes a couple of bugs related to the signal acquisition indicator light and the unit's built-in memory. Read more
The EF 50mm F1.8 STM is Canon's newest iteration of its classic 'nifty fifty' lens. It's a fast, inexpensive normal lens on a full frame DSLR, but also functions as an 80mm equivalent lens on Canon's APS-C bodies. How does it perform in real-world use? We'd expect image quality from Canon's EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) to be very similar, and so far the 24.2MP APS-C DSLRs haven't surprised us in our studio tests. The real differences between these two models is in the user experience, as the T6s provides advanced touches like a top-panel LCD and rear quick control dial for easier access to exposure settings. Canon has announced its EF 50mm F1.8 STM lens, which uses a stepper motor for quieter and more responsive autofocus compared to its 'Mark II' predecessor. It also features a 7-blade circular aperture and minimum focus distance of 35cm - both improvements over the Mark II. The lens is just 39mm long and weighs 160g, has a metal mount, and supports an optional integrated hood. Read more
Canon USA has released a product advisory regarding the sensor defects on its Rebel T6i/T6s (750D/760D) that we reported on last week. The company states that on certain cameras 'white spots may exist on the optical layer which may result in the appearance of dark circular patterns on the captured image under certain shooting conditions'. These cameras will be repaired free of charge and models that have already been repaired will have a marking inside the battery door. Read more
Canon's flagship superzoom is its PowerShot SX60 HS, which sports a 21-1365mm equivalent lens - not quite Coolpix P900 territory but still very impressive. It also features a fully articulating LCD, Wi-Fi with NFC, and 1080/60p video. LensRentals received its first Canon EOS Rebel T6s/760D and T6i/750D units and has identified a sensor problem with a number of those cameras. Out of about 20 units (around 10 of each model), 4 T6s and 2 T6i units contained sensors with noticeable defects in their sensor stacks. These layers of glass on top of the sensor contain a pattern of dust-like spots or particles that are visible when studied under angled light. Read more
China-based manufacturer Yongnuo has produced what looks like a near-clone of Canon's well-liked EF 35mm f/2, a lens that dates back to 1990. With a couple of minor exceptions (one of which being the brand name on the front of the lens) the Yongnuo lens looks very similar to Canon's 25-year-old prime, but at an attractive price of ~$115. Chinese lens adapter manufacturer Kipon has announced plans to introduce the first adapter that allows AF operation when a Canon EF or EF-S lens is attached to a Micro Four Thirds camera body. Previous adapters have either been entirely manual or, more lately, offered aperture control, but the Shanghai-based company has said that its next model will allow full frame and APS-C EOS system lenses to focus automatically too. Sigma has issued a service notice advising that some of its Canon mount interchangeable lenses cannot be used with Live Mode on the Canon EOS Rebel T6s (760D) and the Canon EOS Rebel T6i (750D). Lens owners will receive a free firmware update to fix the problem, though the company has not provided a timeframe for when the update is expected. Both current and discontinued lens models are affected by this issue. Read more
Canon has announced it will introduce a new dye-sublimation thermal transfer printer to its Selphy range of compact photo printers this summer. The Selphy CP1000 will have features very similar to the current products, but will additionally offer the ability to print twin ID photos on the same sheet of paper using the new Dual ID mode. The new model features a USB socket for printing from USB Flash storage as well as from a computer. The printer will also have memory card slots that will accept CF and SD type memory cards, and mini/micro SD cards via adapters. Read more
Canon USA has dropped the price of 31 of its high-end L-series prime and zoom lenses, by between $30 and $800. Several popular zooms like the EF 24-70mm F2.8 II USM and EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS II USM have been discounted by $100 and very high-end primes like the 400mm + F2.8 sports lenses have dropped in price by $500. Today Canon released the XC10, a camera that for all practical purposes is equal part a stills and a video camera. It promises to deliver not only both types of media, but an appropriate user experience for either type of shooting. It may be the first true 'convergence' camera. Canon has released its XC10 digital camcorder which combines advanced 4K video recording with capable still shooting features. The core features are a 12MP 1" CMOS sensor and a fixed F2.8-5.6 image stabilized lens equivalent to 27-270mm for videos and 24-240mm for stills. 4K UHD video is captured using the XF-AVC Intra codec (which offers bit rates up to 305MBps) and 8MP stills can be grabbed from 4K video. Other notable features include a rotating grip, tilting LCD, and built-in Wi-Fi. Read more.
Canon has announced the EOS C300 Mark II Cinema EOS camera, updating its predecessor with a new 8.85 megapixel 35mm sensor allowing 4K shooting. Also new are Dual DIGIC DV5 processors bringing the ability to record 10-bit 4:2:2 4K (UHD or DCI) video internally thanks using the new XF-AVC Codec. Read more
[UPDATED] We were curious to see how the new Canon 11-24 F4 performed on a high resolution sensor, so we've updated our gallery with some landscapes and aperture progressions taken on a 36MP Sony a7R with a Metabones adapter.
