Outrage Watch: This 'Mary Poppins' sequel is not going over well

Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's semi-regular rundown of entertainment-related kerfuffles. Not anxious enough already? Get your fix of righteous indignation below, and stay posted for outrage updates throughout the week. No, this is not a nightmare: Disney is making a new "Mary Poppins" movie musical, and Rob Marshall ("Chicago," "Into the Woods") is going to direct it. This is real life! Accept it and then (please) rage about it. First, we should be clear about one thing: this is not a remake (not even Disney is shameless enough for that). Rather, the film will be a sequel set 20 years after the events of the original film and based on storylines from subsequent books in author P.L. Travers' beloved "Mary Poppins" book series. Regardless, a lot of people are angry, with complaints ranging from director Rob Marshall's involvement to the idea that Travers would not have been happy, were she still alive, »

The Golden Girls' most bad-ass moments

"The Golden Girls," the superhero quartet of choice for people who found "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" not bad-ass enough, turns 30 years old today. The Miami-set series enjoys a huge following even today, which is no surprise when you consider that the show's four lead actresses all won Emmys for their work. To celebrate their awesomeness, let's pick the Golden Girls' best non-"Golden Girls" moments. Rue McClanahan in "Starship Troopers"   Look at Rue McClanahan owning that Blanche Devereux sauciness and absolutely terrifying Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards in "Starship Troopers." Her Karl Lagerfeld-like intensity is fantastic. Even Robert Heinlein couldn't have predicted how welcome McClanahan's presence would be in a sci-fi caper.   Estelle Getty talks feminism on "The Joan Rivers Show" Since everyone's bemoaning that Vanity Fair photo of the all-male late night hosting crew, let's take a moment to remember how kickass Joan Rivers' show was. »

Ridley Scott: I'm not sorry I cast white movie stars in 'Exodus'

Ridley Scott gave a wide-ranging interview to Deadline over the weekend around the premiere of his forthcoming space drama "The Martian" at the Toronto International Film Festival, and one of the topics discussed was the casting controversy around his 2014 Biblical epic "Exodus: Gods and Kings," in which the director and his collaborators came under fire for casting white movie stars including as Egyptians (Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton played Moses and Ramesses II, respectively). At the time Scott told those threatening a boycott of the movie to "Get a life," and now he's doubling down on his stance, noting that the $145 million film never would have been made in the first place had he not cast Caucasian movie stars in the lead roles. Deadline: Exodus was visually overwhelming, you created that ancient world and brought the plagues in all their vivid horror, and yet the fixation was on how you »

95 days until Star Wars: Do you want to know what Poe Dameron's flight suit says?

Did you know the gibberish used in Star Wars in lieu of English is an actual written language? Known as Aurebesh, the 34 letter alphabet can be extrapolated onto any piece of Star Wars lore to translate into English. So of course when I came across a high-resolution image of Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) from “The Force Awakens” on an end cap at my local big box, I snapped a photo and proceeded to get down to deciphering! Image Credit: Donna Dickens/HitFix What should’ve been a quick task quickly took on Herculean proportions as the letters made no damn sense. While the letters on the helmet quickly revealed their secret — it spells “Hal” — the vest was perplexing. No matter what I did or how I cross-referenced, I couldn’t make heads or tales of it. Even the trust “horizontal flip” in case they’d reversed Isaac’s stance while »

Review: Kristen Stewart fights back against a world without emotion in 'Equals'

"Equals," which had its public premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the middle of a mood-appropriately rainy Sunday, was written by Nathan Parker, who was also the credited screenwriter of the Duncan Jones film "Moon." In this case, it's Drake Doremus bringing Parker's words to life, and like Jones, I think he's working at a different level than the writer. While I don't think Doremus was quite as successful as Jones, in both cases, I think the films work in spite of their scripts, not because of them. If you haven't seen "Like Crazy," you should. It's the best film Doremus has made so far, and it seem to encapsulate everything he does well. It's a pretty simple contemporary story with lovely performances from Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones. Since then, both of his lead actors have headed for deep space, Yelchin onboard the ongoing voyages of the »

31 years ago today: Madonna performed 'Like a Virgin' at the first VMAs

On this day in 1984, the first MTV Video Music Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall. Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler hosted, Madonna performed “Like a Virgin,” wearing her iconic bustier/wedding gown with a belt buckle that read “Boy Toy,” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” lost Video of the Year to The Cars’ “You Might Think.” The video for “Thriller” did, however, win Best Choreography and Viewers’ Choice. Watch Madonna Perform "Like A Virgin" At Bottom Among the night’s other winners were David Bowie’s “China Girl” video, Van Halen’s “Jump,” Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” and two videos for Zz Top songs: “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” Other notable Sept. 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1964: The short-lived sitcom “The Bing Crosby Show” premiered on ABC. • 1974: Eric Clapton’s cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” hit No. 1 on the »

Vanessa Williams let the Miss America pageant apologize to her

The Miss America pageant had a good idea this year: What if we apologized to that immensely popular, universally adored former Miss America we disgraced in 1983 for basically no reason? Vanessa Williams acted as a judge in Sunday's 2015 Miss America pageant, which was pretty kind of her. In 1983 the Grammy-, Emmy-, and Tony-nominated star became the first African-American Miss America, but her reign was dashed by a nude photo scandal. Miss America officials reportedly coerced her to resign, and since that dark period she's had a uniformly terrific career (or terrific careers, I should say). It was satisfying watching her return to the Miss America stage and sing Amy Grant's "Oh How the Years Go By," though for fun's sake I wish she'd busted out that old dance jam "Running Back to You."  If anyone can make an old-fashioned pageant palatable in 2015, it's Vanessa Williams. Here's hoping we get »

Emily Blunt is refreshingly blunt on why she’s in the running for ‘Captain Marvel’

We are three years away from Marvel’s stand-alone “Captain Marvel” film. But that hasn’t stopped everyone from casual fans to professional entertainment journalists from daydreaming about who might step into Carol Danver’s red boots. One name that’s been popping up is Emily Blunt — especially after her turn in “Edge of Tomorrow.” Over the weekend, Blunt was at Tiff to promote her new film “Sicario.” She plays FBI agent Kate Macer who is pulled into a sketchy underworld that is above her pay grade. Blunt spoke to IndieWire about it, and as “Sicario” is Blunt’s second gun-wielding action flick in two years, talk turned to Captain Marvel. While Blunt stated she’s not heard anything from official channels about interest in her for the role, she wasn’t surprised by the speculation. “I think it’s because the list is very short, because we don’t »

Mindy Kaling: 'If a couple gets together and it’s boring, the characters are bad'

Though "The Mindy Project" went through a whole lot of changes through its three seasons on Fox, particularly with its revolving-door supporting cast for a couple of years, the version of it that's going to debut tomorrow on Hulu(*) is more or less the same as the one that last aired on a traditional TV network. (*) Hulu episodes tend to debut not long after midnight Eastern, though that's not an absolute. Also, unlike Netflix and Amazon, Hulu's plan with "Mindy" and its other originals is to premiere episodes weekly, rather than releasing the whole season at once. The fourth season premiere is longer (clocking in at nearly 28 minutes), and goes back to the classic three-act sitcom structure that most of the broadcast networks have unfortunately replaced with a four-act one (which makes all scenes and acts feel like they end much too abruptly). But the cast is the same, even »

Review: Julianne Moore and Ellen Page fight the good fight but can't save 'Freeheld'

Toronto – Nothing is more disheartening than writing a negative review about a movie with admirable intentions. “Freeheld,” which debuted tonight at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, is based on the true story of Laurel Hester, an Ocean County, New Jersey police officer who fought to have her pension benefits assigned to her domestic partner Stacie in 2005.  Unfortunately, an impressive cast and significant real-life events can’t trump the fact it’s a badly made movie. When we first meet Laurel (Julianne Moore) she’s in the middle of a stake out with her partner Dane Wells (Michael Shannon).  Along with a few other officers they are trying to nail a drug dealer working the boardwalk.  When things go wrong, Laurel shows up to save the day which is meant to telegraph the fact that she’s a damn good cop. It’s elementary script writing directed like an episode of »
