About the Directors

Dr. Patrick Kamath

Dr. Patrick Kamath received his undergraduate training at the National College in Bangalore, India followed by medical school and postgraduate training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research in Chandigarh, India. He joined the staff in 1991 and is currently a Professor of Medicine. Dr. Kamath’s research interests include the study of clinical outcomes related to cirrhosis and portal hypertension, vascular diseases of the liver, and polycystic liver disease. Recent work has resulted in developing the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score which is currently being used to direct the process of organ allocation for liver transplantation in the United States.

Dr. Vijay Shah

Dr. Vijay Shah received his undergraduate, medical school and postgraduate training at Northwestern University. He pursued a research and clinical fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Yale University under the mentorship of Dr. Roberto Groszmann and Dr. William Sessa. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1997 where he is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine, Physiology, and Cancer Cell Biology. Dr. Shah's research interests include biology and treatment of portal hypertension, tumor angiogenesis, and alcoholic liver disease. A number of laboratory and clinical projects are ongoing in these areas.
