ETTR is better

and so are other techniques when dealing with high DR scenes than lifting shadows.

Shadow lifting is  always a compromise, but ETTR is not. Its true that at the moment some other sensors do better compromise than Canon sensors when it comes to lifting shadows. When people say all you need is a better technique then they are called Canon apologists or Canon fanboys.

While I appreciate the value of a better compromise, I call a compromise a compromise unlike some DPR admins or lesser brand fanboys. I am quite happy to be a Canon fanboy.

When talking about DR we often forget that ETTR can be very useful. Some examples where no or less than 1 stop shadow lifting was needed

My friend is a Nikon fan. I absolutely love him for it (and for other reasons).

I thought the wood texture here would be interesting

but needed the clouds too

no worries

Some say since the beginning of on chip ADC Canon cameras have stopped taking landscapes. Following two shots are from multiple exposure blending experiment with 5DsR. While processing I realized that I could process them from one of the multiple shots.

ETTR is good.
