2.0 out of 5 stars great app/questionable ads December 11, 2011
By B. Owen
great app and love the ability to find quick definitions and the thesaurus is great. The ads are very inappropriate. Accidentally tapped an add and was blasted with images of topless women. come on dictionary.com, screen your ads and keep them family appropriate.

1.0 out of 5 stars TRULY deserves ------10 Yes NEGATIVE 10 review August 11, 2013

I don't tend to write reviews but this app truly deserves a -10 star review! I saved the worst for last since I quote their OWN privacy policy!

1. The app says that it takes 3.2mb of storage. However when loaded it takes over 5.64MB for the app alone.

2. IF it takes well over 5 MB of storage why does it require internet access? It will NOT run without internet access at all. The dictionary should be stored on the device. The Bible would take far far less storage if you need a comparison.

3. The menu is ONLY available from the home screen. It doesn't show up anywhere else, and doesn't even let yoiu know that you can only get it on the home screen.

4. The privacy policy included with the app is written in VERY small small print. When expanded large enough to read it because a major job of scrolling to discourage people from reading it.

5. Okay WHY does it need internet access when the dictionary is probably stored on the phone? Well lets look at their OWN privacy policy for the answer since most people wont read it. The privacy policy gives the company the right to not only save your devices ID, all the activities you do with their app, and your general location! Not ONLY that but that they can share it with ALL their partners including your phones ID! For those that don't believe me then here is part of their privacy policy in their OWN words:

"Dictionary.com may collect and use information related your device, such as the unique device ID ("UDID"), the device type, operating system, and carrier information. Dictionary.com may collect and store information about your activities on the app and online/offline status and tie that information to your UDID. Dictionary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential March 23, 2011
This is one of the most useful apps on my phone. While it needs a data connection to retrieve the definitions, it is faster in my opinion than searching for the same thing through your phone's browser. Additionally, the app can provide audible pronunciations and a thesaurus (without requiring a separate program). This is essential to any student, but is also convenient for anyone who wants or needs access to a dictionary on the go! Runs smoothly on my Droid 2 Global w/ Froyo (Android 2.2).

5.0 out of 5 stars Decent! March 24, 2011
This is a great thing to have on hand. I'm a college student at the moment and I love looking up words, (plus handy when writing papers etc). The only drag - you have to be connected to the internet for the "word of the day". Other than that - I'm very happy with this!

1.0 out of 5 stars Needs Internet? Ridiculous! February 15, 2012
Verified Purchase
As noted by other reviews, it's ridiculous that the iPhone version of this app requires no internet connection to search, but the Android version does. Especially on the Fire.
Switching to Merriam Webster, which works offline just fine, thank you very much!

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs paid version October 5, 2011

Please produce a paid version of the app... I really dislike ads. A small amount charged to make the ads go away is a big deal, as that saves bandwidth from not having to download worthless ads that I ignore anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful app December 31, 2012
By Arianna

I found this app to be very useful when I wanted to know definitions of words. It is a faster way of getting a clear defenition and it also provides you with a thesaurus, which I find very helpful when I want 2 know another word or don't exactly understand the definition. I fond this app to be very useful because when I want to go back to a certain word later I can also add them to my favorites and instantly go to that word. He need for Internet to operate this app may be slightly inconvenient but I find this better than looking through an actual dictionary.

1.0 out of 5 stars used to be great May 5, 2012
Verified Purchase
It was my favorite app on my ipod touch. I loved looking up random words. Now it requires an Internet connection, it wants to load the word of the day first, and it no longer lists the words that could continue off what you have, which is handy for scrabble and GHOST. I'd give it 5 stars if I had the initial release back.
