Light Painting Waterfalls

I'm on a trip to Northern Wisconsin. Tonight I tried something new. I had some trouble. I expect to have the opportunity to do more of this. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I'm particularly concerned about the out of focus leaves at the top. And the fact that it was hard to concentrate the light from my flashlight on the waterfall without over emphasizing the vegetation in the foreground.

These were taken when it was essentially pitch black, about 45 minutes after sunset.
