27 July 1921 – Frederick Banting and Charles Best at the University of Toronto first isolated insulin. The first diabetes patient was treated on 11 January 1922. Banting and J.J.R. Macleod received the Nobel Prize for their achievement.

28 July 1958 – “Marathon of Hope” runner Terry Fox, who inspired millions of people around the world and drew nationwide attention in his fund raising efforts for cancer research, was born at Winnipeg.

29 July 1874 – Politician James Woodsworth, who was first leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, was born at Etobicoke, Ont.

30 July 1962 – The Trans-Canada Highway was officially opened at Roger’s Pass, BC.

31 July 1957 – The Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line of radar stations was put into operation.

1 August 1969 – The government of Saskatchewan announced that feed grain would be accepted as payment for university tuition for children of farmers in the province. The program was to be limited to 200 students, with acceptance based on applicants’ financial need.

2 August 1862 – Victoria was incorporated as a city.
