‘The People v. O.J. Simpson’ Finale: Producers Weigh in on the Verdict, the Jury and That Knife

5 April 2016 8:33 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler alert: Do not read until you’ve watched the Season 1 finale of “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Episode 10, titled “The Verdict.”

Let’s get what we all knew was coming out of the way: In the series, as in life, O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the charges against him. But the not guilty verdict was never the point. For the producers of FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” their story was always about the journey, not the destination.

Executive producers Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander tell Variety they’ve been overwhelmed by the reaction to the show. “I think we always really believed in the story and the quality of the work that everyone was doing, but it’s not only just simply that people are watching, it’s that people are talking about it,” says Karaszewski. “They’re talking about the themes that we brought up, like »

The Forgotten: E.A. Dupont's "Atlantic" (1929)

31 March 2016 7:36 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Joop van den Berg's 1929 poster for AtlanticE.A. Dupont achieved early fame for Varieté (1925), a grimly saucy slice of Weimar doom and spiciness, and followed it up with prestigious British productions Moulin Rouge (1928) and Piccadilly (1929), the latter starring Anna May Wong—but just as his career was on the upswing he fell prey to the advent of sound, producing a big-budget version of the Titanic disaster in English and German versions.Atlantic, or Atlantik, became something of a laughing-stock in Britain, owing to Dupont's unfortunate combination of Teutonic tendencies and technical trepidation. The actors were directed to communicate as slowly as possible, perhaps so that Dupont could follow what they were saying. His desire to inflect each syllable with suitable weight and portent robbed the film of any sense of urgency, despite it being set on a ship that starts sinking around twenty minutes in (none of the ninety-minute time-wasting »

March Madness: "Batman V. Superman" - Is There A Joker In The Deck?

19 March 2016 5:29 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

"Batman v. Superman": potential blockbuster or "Cleopatra Redux".

By Lee Pfeiffer

The heavily-hyped Warner Brothers super hero epic "Batman V. Superman:  Dawn of Justice" is one of the most heavily promoted films in years. It's also one of the most expensive. Variety estimates that the film's $250 million production budget plus ancillary marketing costs will make it necessary for the movie to gross $800 worldwide just to break even. You read that right: $800 million. One industry analyst says that anything less than a gross of $1 billion will be considered a disappointment. Warner Brothers contends that those figures don't take into consideration ancillary revenues from video and merchandising. Fair enough, but if a film bombs, generally speaking, the merchandise and video sales do, too. If you doubt it, how many people did you see walking around with "Waterworld" or "Howard the Duck" T shirts? Veteran screenwriter William Goldman once said of the film industry "Nobody knows anything. »

Latest 'Hur' Remake Gets a Loud, Bombastic Trailer for the Fast and Furious Crowd

'Ben-Hur' 2016 with Jack Huston: Chariot race to the death. 'Ben-Hur' 2016 trailer: 'Gladiator' meets 'Fast Seven' meets 'Star Wars' meets… Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have released the trailer for their 2016 Ben-Hur remake (or reboot or readaptation) – a.k.a. Fast and Furious A.D., as one wag called it in an online comment. Instead of grandiose spectacle featuring at its core a “human” story with Christian overtones, this chariot-and-sandals epic is being sold as Gladiator meets Fast Seven meets Spartacus: Blood and Sand meets Star Wars – with Morgan Freeman's Sheik Ilderim as the Roman Empire's dreadlocked version of Alec Guinness' Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi. Say what you will, the trailer-makers sure know their target audience. And that's not the same crowd that would go check out what's usually referred to in the U.S. media as “faith” (i.e., Christian) movies. One assumes that particular audience segment will be getting »

Screening Room: what is it and what does it mean for cinema?

A new streaming service aims to bring us the latest cinema releases at home - for a cost. We take a look at Screening Room...

You may have already noticed that the common story in two of this year’s biggest films is of heroes who become sworn enemies. In one corner we have Batman V Superman, with the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel locked in a furious battle seemingly orchestrated by Lex Luthor. In the other there’s Captain America: Civil War, which sees the Avengers split into two opposing factions - one supporting a government register for those with super powers, the other against it.

A similar rift appears to be opening up in the film industry - this time over a new streaming service called Screening Room. Proposed by Napster co-creator Sean Parker, Screening Room will, if it goes ahead, allow its »

Why Paul Rudd Wanted The Lead Role In Titanic So Badly

17 March 2016 9:54 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Some roles are inextricable from the actors who play them. Leonardo DiCaprio became a household name in 1997 with his portrayal of Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s tragic love story Titanic and instantly became linked to the iconic film. However, other A-list Hollywood actors tried out for the part. Paul Rudd recently appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden and revealed that when he auditioned for the part, he wanted the role because of his father’s connection to the doomed ship.   During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show, actor Paul Rudd revealed to host James Corden that years ago he auditioned for the part of Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s Titanic. Aside from the role representing a great career opportunity, Rudd had a personal connection to the part. He explained that his father was a member of the Titanic Historical »

James Cameron, Jon Landau Slam Screening Room Home Video Proposal

James Cameron and Jon Landau have declared early opposition against the Screening Room proposal that would allow day-and-date showings at home when studio films are released in theaters.

Landau told Variety that he and Cameron believe that the initial release of films should take place only in theaters.

“We know that this proposal is at the early stage and we have an obligation to speak out publicly against it,” he added.

Early supporters of the Screening Room include Peter Jackson, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, Frank Marshall, Taylor Hackford, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Variety first reported last week that Sean Parker had originated the proposal, which would offer new releases in the home for $50 per 48-hour view.

Opposition has come from the National Assn. of Theater Owners and the Art House Convergence.

“Both Jim and I remain committed to the sanctity of the in-theater experience,” Landau said. “For us, »

Paul Rudd Auditioned for Jack in 'Titanic': Watch Him Recreate Iconic Scene

16 March 2016 7:55 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Oh, Paul Rudd, you would've shined up like a new penny as Jack Dawson. Then again, Paul admitted that the guy who got the role in "Titanic" did a pretty good job.

Paul Rudd and Diane Lane were guests last night on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," and both stars talked about huge roles they didn't quite get. Diane Lane said she was one of the many actresses who auditioned for "Pretty Woman," which originally had a much, much darker story than the Cinderella movie they made with Julia Roberts.

Paul said he auditioned for "Titanic," joking that he went for Kate Winslet's role. Paul said he really wanted to get the part that (obviously) went to Leonardo DiCaprio, because his dad was a Titanic historian. "That was what he did for a living. He used to take people all over the world taking about the Titanic. »

J.J. Abrams Explains Why 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Has Less Lens Flares

10 March 2016 5:16 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Even before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a global blockbuster, J.J. Abrams was one of the most beloved directors in the business. He made his directorial debut with 2006's Mission: Impossible III, which helped revive that franchise, before taking on the Star Trek reboot. As popular as his films are, there is still an aspect that has bothered a great deal of fans, his constant overuse of lens flares, which is most prevalent in 2009's Star Trek, 2011's Super 8 and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness. But they were practically non-existent in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The director explained during a recent appearance on Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he stopped using lens flares because his wife told him to.

"Katie has told me to stop a lot of things... but with the lens flares, I was like, Ok. She was right. There was one scene in »

London — The fifth season of crime drama “Ripper Street” will be its last, Amazon Prime has revealed.

Amazon stepped in to save “Ripper Street” in early 2014, following outcry from fans when the show was cancelled by the BBC after two seasons. The original Tiger Aspect production team was commissioned by Amazon to create season three, which launched exclusively for Prime members in the U.K. in November 2014.

At the same time, seasons one and two were made available for unlimited streaming for Prime members. When season three launched on Prime Video, it was streamed more than any other TV show on the service and was the most popular British drama amongst customers.

In the final season, writer Richard Warlow shows how, as the Victorian age comes to a close, the police officers of H Division attempt to maintain law and order on the streets of Whitechapel. Joseph Mawle (“In the Heart of the Sea »
