Witness Teenage Steven Soderbergh’s Amazing ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ Superfandom

2001social

If you ever wondered what exactly happens when a 13-year-old sits around all day watching A Clockwork Orange, apparently “becoming one of the greatest filmmakers in a generation” is in the cards.

An eagle-eyed Redditor uncovered a wicked piece of history involving award-winning (and sadly semi-retired) auteur Steven Soderbergh in the form of a clipping from Louisiana-based magazine Gris-Gris. When the editors mistakenly credited mime Daniel Richter’s part as the Moonwatcher ape in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, young Soderbergh was there to prove his dedication to the great masters films and also make a rather odd request:

Soderbergh remained such a fan of 2001 through his life that he eventually recut the movie as a home art project, though it’s sadly been taken offline.

Sorry, but your CBR article by Phegley reviewing the Gris-Gris article mistakenly has Phegley explaining that Daniel Richter was not supposed to be credited by the Gris-Gris editors -the second sentence in the second paragraph should read: “When the editors mistakenly credited mime MISTER RAYMOND STEINER’s part as the Moonwatcher ape in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey,…”, and I’ll take that derby now, thank you.

Nope. They mistakenly credited his part to someone else, as the article states. Reading comprehension is important!
