Based on the best-selling books by Suzanne Collins, THE HUNGER GAMES is the first film in the franchise. Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her younger sister's place and must rely upon her sharp instincts when she's pitted against highly trained Tributes who have prepared their entire lives. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Award Winner for 2012! First off -Some of these comments should be Tributes to the Trash! They obviously saw a different movie. Of course the storyline was already there and was followed very well. That along with excellent acting, cinematography, directing , and audio tracks that are nothing like I've experienced before in a movie. This movie will be raking in the awards because it deserves it!

Great! Obviously the books are going to be better, but it was great. People who gave it a low rating don't have any taste. This series is my favorite series, of books or movies! I have read all three and have watched both the Hunger Games, and Catching Fire, and I definitely will watch Mockingjay part 1 and part 2. This is a great movie.

Poor Adaptation of the Book The screen play was spotty. The characters were without depth. The sense of urgency and desparation was missing. It was not believable. A tremendous let down that missed the mark in every area.

Absolutely great I had doubts, never saw in theaters but then I rented to see what the hype was all about and this movie kicks butt! Great story and acting is perfect. Great for all ages I recommend for anyone looking to see a "really really good" movie.

Great movie In a post apocolyptic world were they have oppression and divide this movie embracess a harsh reality that freedom is something that only the few see. Kids are used as pawns to remind the masses of the war and bloodshed. This movie captured that those willing to sacrifice for the many will prevent history repeating its self. What showed is that with in each distric something of a reality that we can see today if we choose to see it. I loved the movie and the lesson it taught about humanity.

Best. Movie. Ever. Such a good movie! Very true to the book although they kind of rushed through the ending, but it was still good. I read the books, I liked the movie. Some people who read the books hated it but I loved it.

Did they even read the books? I was amazingly disappointed in this movie. I however LOVED the books they took out atleast 97% of the love story between Peeta and Katniss, they skipped over some of the most important parts like the avox or Peetas dad coming to visit Katniss to promise her family wont starve, or his mom telling him SHE is a survivor. The book is a million times better i promise
Too violent for kids I give the movie 5 stars for being a really good movie, however minus 3 stars for marketing a very violent movie to kids. Who in their right mind want to take thair kid to see a bunch of teenagers violently kill each other with knives, swords and bricks. Hell they might as well have them rape each other and eat the bodies when they are done. After watching this thing I felt like 300 was a rate at G movie. Warning do not let your kids watch this movie unless you don't mind them watching blood pattering everywhere.
Book They left out vital parts in the movie..the mocking jay pin was not found. It was given..peetas leg should have been cut off and given a wooden leg.so many things wrong or left out. But it was a fantastic movie
rated it was terrible left out the little things that made the book so great. i am amazingly disappointed.
Best movie based from book in a while. This is honestly an amazing movie. I have read the books so there were a few things that have been left out and changed but thisbis honestly one of the best movies best off a book in a while. It had an amazing cast the writers and producers did an amazing job transforming this movie it what it is.
Definitely not better than the book But, what movie is? I did however, enjoy the thrill of the masterful cinematography and story. Can't wait to see it on Blu-ray!
Astounding, amazing and, most of all, authentic! My wife and I (both aged 50+) saw this at a Saturday AM showing opening weekend. As book people, we usually read a book before we see the movie it is based on and consciously look for the inevitable changes. We devoured all 3 books the week before the movie, and the changes between book and film were so perfect we had to discuss the film later to recognize them. Brooks and Collins created a perfect marriage of author's and director's visions, and created not one but two masterpieces. We eagerly await #2!
Ok After seeing Battle Royale, I'm going to be bias here but this movie is child's play compared to Battle Royale. The Hunger Games has potential, but it was neither executed well enough in the novels nor the movies so far. Plus Battle Royale had richer and denser character development than the Hunger Games. Furthermore, the Hunger Games is really aimed at teen hormonal girl/boy teenagers with its nice love triangle which was executed badly and not believable.
HAPPY HUNGER GAMES AND MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!!!! I for one just love this movie?!! O can watch this over and over and over again! The books were good to! I'm an action girl. So this movie was just right for me. And I'm a big rebellious girl too! For teenagers and adults this is far one of my favorite movies! Even tho kids shouldn't watch this only because it has lots of violent. I love it!!!
Garbage! I dont know what people see in this movie. Pure garbage. So many other better movies out there. Waste of time. The book might be better....but not gonna read it! There are so many 5 star reviews here that look fake...possibly a marketing hype! do not buy into this!
The Best Movie Ever!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone Who Hasn't seen The Hunger Games Should! Its an amazing movie. And I just want to say that the comparisons to Twilight are all wrong. Ive read all Three Hunger Games books and saw the movie and I'm a HUGE Twilight fan, but the two movies are NOTHING ALIKE exsept the fact that the three main characters are 2 boys and A girl. Anyways, The Hunger Games Is An Amazing Movie, and thats an understatement. Please watch It!!!
Awesome Loved the Hunger Games. I am a complete fanatic, and can not wait for Catching Fire. I read the series, which amazed me, and when The Hunger Games came to Netflix, I watched it the first chance I got. Love loved the series, love loved the movie. Rating: PG-13
Stupid! This movie is completely stupid. It feels like a low budget, slow moving "B" movie. Might be okay for dumb teens, but any adult with semi decent taste will feel like they wasted time that they will never get back.
omg love it everybody needs to stop hating the hunger games is an awesome movie so like b quiet nd stop saying it is bad u r out of ur minds........ I love the hunger games can't wait til catching fire
Good entertaining movie Never read the book on this one, but heard lots of God things about both the book and movie. Decided to watch the movie one lazy day and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I doubt you will see any Oscars awarded for this movie, but it was very good and maintained my interest throughout.
I love the movie!! I movie was amazing. The beginning was a little slow, but the full movie was full of suspense, romance, sadness and love. I could watch the movie everyday. I love the movie forever!!
Really? With all the hype around this movie I thought I was going to be blow away. The production and editing of this movie seems like it was made for TV. The SciFi channel has better productions. Though the story has great Orwellian undertones, it is lost in surface level acting and direction. It is a shame. Struggled to finish the film.
Haters gonna hate Haters gonna hate. Great movie, I even read the books and loved it. The low raters just don't have good taste
Great Book to Film adaptation This is one of the best book to film adaptation movies out there. The book is written solely in Katniss' perspective. It was very unexpected and enlightening to see the movie from an overall world view, especially since I read the all the books before the movie came out. Great watch and even greater read. I recommend the books, you will enjoy the movie so much more seeing it all through Katniss' eyes.
Well worth watching Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss perfectly! Her looks match her character very well, the same can be said for Peeta who I personally adored. As for the plot I couldn't help but keep making comparisons between it and the book... The events seemed very rushed not giving the viewer the full impact of the time spent in the arena. There were also huge changes in the back story, the pin for example, the Avox girl not being featured... and some other key dialog. However with that being said I understand it's difficult to condense every detail from book to movie. I think the movie itself is a success, the story both intense and heart-touching.The most prominent events were included and done fantastically too! pssst If you loved the movie, i insist on reading the book :D
Most enjoyable. I'm not one to be swayed by others' reviews of movies because I like to experience them for myself. With Hunger Games I'm glad I stuck to that because it was a very interesting and enjoyable movie. From what I've heard the book is better so I'll be reading that as well. I think Jennifer Lawrence's character Katniss was compelling and well played. This is a movie that will take your through several different emotions - fear, tension, happiness, sadness - and,, to me, that's one of things that make a movie great.
Very good adaptation Very moving adaptation of the books. The emotional scenes are very touching and well done. The action is rushed and should have been better drawn out and easier to follow. But of course, it is obvious the studio would want to rush through and take off action scenes where children are getting killed. Still a very good and enjoyable movie. Running man meets Harry Potter.
I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES !!! Omg I love this movie today was my first time watching it on Netflix I love it in some parts I wanted to cry like tht part when the little girl died :'( omg I almost cried but I wanna watch catching fire so bad it's not on Netflix yet ugh I've been watching the perviews/ trailer but any I love the cast I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES YAYYYY. I really wish they make a third one.... HUNGER GAMES YAYYYY
Pretty good A lot of my friends found this movie to be amazing. After hearing how great it was, I got it from Redbox. I was definitely impressed. Not my favorite ever, but the idea of slaughtering 12 year-olds with swords definitely made this movie well worth the watch. Also, pretty good acting and an interesting story.
Fails to deliver I've seen plenty of low budget movies of excellent quality and wonderful screenplays. This version of HG fails to deliver; if the quality was better I would forget how much they modified characters for not justified reason other than making the screenplay even more shallow than it already was and take away the essence of the original story almost completely. The true drama, the physically tolling tasks and traps, the true and sincere suffering and struggle of the personages is gone, we're left only with a bunch of soap opera characters that get a scratch on the arm while their hair remains intact. Simply not compelling and/or gripping as the actual book's storyline. Why do they have to SHAKE THE CAMERAS all over the place? This is by far one of Hollywood's cheapest and lamest "tricks" there's really no more anti-cinematography act that using this effect to create whatever effect or emotion it is that they are trying to convey; the only effect/emotion on me is that of annoyance! I rather look away. Hardcore fans will just forgive anything, who knows is that is what this production is counting on, because there's really so much left to chance than true love and passion for the story
Awesome Loved it. Great story. People who criticize the violence with kids killing each other are missing the point. The Kurds are innocent and victims of rich powerful people. Only complaint, they are splitting the sequels up and stretching the trilogy out too far. I hate waiting so long for the next movie!
Imagine the Future I loved the trilogy and was very excited to see the movie. I would not recommend the movie for children. I do think the movie attempts to make the scenes realistic without gore. The story teaches a great lesson on how society can be controlled when ignorance of oppression is part of any governments agenda. Great books, movie, plot, honesty, and beautiful cinematography.
Spectacular Let me start off by saying I have read the book. There were a few things done differently in the movie but the way they changed it made it better suited for the big screen. The characters were well cast and each one played their part perfectly. They did a wonderful job putting the book to screen. Love, love, love these movies!
