CDC Director Tom Frieden
Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, took the helm as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry on June 8, 2009. Dr. Frieden has worked to control health threats from infectious diseases, respond to emergencies, and battle the leading causes of suffering and death in our nation and around the world.
As the director of our nation’s health protection agency, he is leading CDC to address challenging health priorities.

Ileana Arias, PhD, serves as Principal Deputy Director for CDC and ATSDR. In this role, she serves as the principal advisor to the director on all scientific and programmatic activities of CDC/ATSDR.

John Auerbach is the Associate Director for Policy at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He oversees the Office of the Associate Director for Policy (OADP) which focuses on the promotion of public health and prevention as components of health care and payment reform and health system transformation.

Beth P. Bell, MD, MPH, is the director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID). She provides leadership for the prevention and control of a broad spectrum of infectious diseases, including rare but deadly diseases like Ebola and anthrax, and more common conditions like foodborne diseases and healthcare-associated and antibiotic-resistant infections
Sherri A. Berger, MSPH
Chief Operating Officer
Sherri Berger became Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of 10 major operating divisions of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in August 2011. As COO, she oversees management, facilities, and operations at the Atlanta-based public health agency. She provides substantial strategic direction for CDC’s 10,000 employees, 5,000 contractors, and $13 billion budget – while ensuring CDC has proper resources to fulfill its critical work to save lives and protect people from health threats.
Coleen A. Boyle, PhD, MS hyg
Director, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities
Dr. Boyle received her MS(hyg) in biostatistics and PhD in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health and completed postdoctoral training in epidemiologic methods at Yale University.
Pat Breysse, PhD
Director, National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR)
Pat Breysse, PhD, joined CDC in December 2014 as the Director of NCEH/ATSDR. Dr. Breysse leads CDC’s efforts to investigate the relationship between environmental factors and health. He came to CDC from the Johns Hopkins University where he served as Associate Chair for Educational Programs within the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Program Director for the Industrial Hygiene Training Program, and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Childhood Asthma in the Urban Environment.

Debra Houry, MD, MPH, is the Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at CDC. In this role, Dr. Houry leads innovative research and science-based programs to prevent injuries and violence and to reduce their consequences. She joined the CDC in October 2014.

Robin M. Ikeda, MD, MPH (RADM, USPHS), is the CDC Deputy Director for the Office of Noncommunicable Diseases, Injury and Environmental Health (ONDIEH). In this position, she is responsible for providing guidance and leadership to the CDC′s scientific and programmatic portfolios.

Dr. Harold Jaffe has been appointed as Associate Director for Science at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). An internationally recognized scientist and public health leader, Dr. Jaffe is returning to CDC from the University of Oxford, UK, where he has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Public Health and Fellow of St Cross College since 2004.

Rebecca Martin, PhD, is the Acting Director of the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since 2012, Dr. Martin has served as the Director for the Global Immunization Division, in CGH, which leads CDC’s global polio eradication efforts, accelerated disease control for vaccine-preventable diseases, introduction of new and underutilized vaccines, and the strengthening of immunization systems.

Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH, is the Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP). Since 2009, Dr. Mermin served as Director of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, NCHHSTP, CDC, where one of his primary goals was to align efforts with scientific evidence and improve HIV prevention, including within the health care sector.

Charles J. Rothwell, MBA, MS, serves as the director for the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). His center conducts a number of nationwide surveys that provide information on health status and on the healthcare system. He came to Federal government service in 1987 as Associate Director of NCHS responsible for IT and information services of the Center.

Anne Schuchat is the director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and has worked at CDC since 1988 on immunization, respiratory, and other infectious diseases.

Carmen Villar is Chief of Staff for CDC and is responsible for managing day-to-day operations of the Office of the Director. She will resolve issues that cross organizational lines, coordinate decision-making processes, and help CDC focus on its highest priority initiatives.
