Making Space for Recycling Bins

Keeping Recycling Bins Accessible

We're in the business of organizing garages and keeping common household items organized, so it's no surprise that we've had to find ideas that keep recycling bins in a tidy home while being accessible. Almost every client we meet with has recycling bins that get shoved against a wall or in a corner, so we do our best to work them into their plan and make them look good or hide them all together.

1.  DIY Wood Mounts

We love the Do-it-Yourself crowd and have learned some pretty great things from some of our clients that we continue to use and pass onto other clients. One of them was this wood cleat recycling bin system, with directions by TheFamilyHandyman.com.
Create some cleats out of rough lumber, mount them to the studs, and you've got a great place to hang recycling bins on the wall. This system takes up less space, with the added bonus of moving a few less things around when it's time to sweep.

2.  Simple Bin Hangers

These simple bin hangers are inexpensive, easy to install, and tough. These are very similar to the DIY Wood Mounts but without cutting lumber. Of course you have four pieces to mount and you'll need to so some measuring to make sure they line up properly, but the end result will be very similar. For less than $20, your bins can be off the foor and within easy reach.

3.  Stackable Bins

If you're recycling bins weren't included in your waste removal service contract and you have to purchase your own, the stackable bins are very convenient. Most have a handle that makes transporting them easier. Of course these can also mount to your wall with one of the systems mentioned above to keep them off the floor.
Frontgate.com carries a cart stacking system that happens to have a set of wheels, getting them from your garage to the curb doesn't get much easier than this...unless you can get someone else to do it for you.

4.  Wall System Brackets

We wouldn't be in business if we didn't find ways to use our wall system in a million different ways. It's the most versitale system we offer because it can store many different things, in unlimited ways. Recycling bins are no exception. While we haven't found a hook specifically made for attaching recycling bins to a wall storage system, shelf brackets happen to work perfectly. There are also recycling bins available that attach directly to slatwall. They're a bit smaller than a standard recycling bin, so they might not work well for a larger family.

5.  Modified Garage Cabinet

You don't have to have a specialty cabinet for this to work. If you already have a cabinet that happens to be large enough to accomodate your recycling bins, you're all set. Adjust the shelves and create some access holes in the side.
We've modified a few cabinets for some tough to store items, recycling bins were some of them. Off of the floor and out of sight, The Garage Guy's favorite way to store things.

Reclaiming some floor space

Unless your garage has much more space then you'll ever need, you're probably constantly looking for ways to gain a bit more floor space. Recycling bins are space hogs, luckily there are many ways to keep your recycling bins from consuming your garage. Getting them off of the floor in one of the ways listed above will definitely help.
