Marijuana approved in Mexico to treat epileptic child

A federal judge in Mexico has approved the use of medical marijuana to treat a child with a rare form of epilepsy. Julie Noce reports.

Meet eight-year-old Graciela Elizalde. She suffers from a rare and severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy and can have up to 400 seizures a day. She's tried homeopathic and other alternatives therapies to no avial. But thanks to a recent court order, a federal judge has approved the use of a cannabis extract, derived from marijuana, to help ease her symptoms. Graciela's father hopes his daughters story will help others. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) GRACIELA ELIZALDE'S FATHER, RAUL ELIZALDE, SAYING: "It would have been easier to do it under the table but we tried to do it as open, legal and public as possible to create a precedent. In a country still struggling with illegal drug trafficking the ruling could set some precedent for loosening restrictions and help create a new perspective for medical marijuana uses. Although access to the drug has been granted for Graciela, her lawyers are still trying to find a supplier. Local media say the family will travel to the U.S. later this month and potentially get the medication prescribed there.
