Student killed, two wounded in Sacramento college shooting

Police say a fistfight at a Sacramento community college escalated into a shooting that left one student dead and two others injured. Linda So reports.

The shooting occurred Thursday, near the baseball field on the campus of Sacramento City College. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT, SAYING: "I'm walking out of class and I see this lunatic shooting two men." This freshman who did not want to be identified says he saw the gunman walk up to the men and start firing shots. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT, SAYING: "I run the other direction because I feared him turning around and shooting me because I'm a witness so I ran upstairs and I called the cops and I was freaking out." Police say one student was killed. Two others were injured. Investigators believe the incident started as a quarrel which led to a fistfight. SOUNDBITE: CORPORAL DUSTIN POORE, LOS RIOS POLICE DEPARTMENT, SAYING: "4 individuals were involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical." Police locked down the college and gave the all-clear after several hours. SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT, SAYING: "I feel like we need to figure out who did this and make sure it never happens again." SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT, SAYING: "I'm definitely not going to be going here next semester, because I fear this kind of stuff happening again." The gunman who police say is of Pacific Island descent is still on the run.
