“ Neil Patrick Harris opened with a song-and-dance number that was marvelously executed, completely appropriate and inoffensive. Entertaining though it was, we were more than a little thrilled when Jack Black brought a little bit of shadow to Harris’s unbelievably chipper opening song-and-dance number by railing about the song's saccharine celebration of movies.
"All we get is super heroes: Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Jedi Man, Sequel Man, Prequel Man formulate scripts/And after 50 Shades of Grey, they'll all have leather whips! "In a world where our brains are becoming machines, the only screens we're watching are the screens in our jeans!" Yes, it was part of the joke, but Black's gravelly rant no doubt reflected the feelings of more than a few people watching from home who were hoping for a little more thrill and a little less predictable showbiz razzle dazzle. ” People: Jack Black

“ When Neil Patrick Harris came to the stage in his tighty whities, channeling a moment from Birdman, Miles Teller riffed on a drum set to accentuate his feigned embarrassment. Staring nervously at the audience, he deadpanned, "Acting is a noble profession," as he introduced Margot Robbie and Teller, who were presenting the next award.
Harris returned to the stage, post-costume change, and observed, "After my last entrance, I am now a changed man." ” People: Neil Patrick Harris

“ Did you call your mother when Best Supporting Actor winner J.K. Simmons advised you to after he made his acceptance speech? Did you think about it, at least? We hope you did one of those -- if his simple, honest urging to appreciate the people who raised you didn't move you, check your pulse. ”

“ When Tegan and Sarah and the Lonely Island performed a Lego-tastic, frenetic version of the song "Everything Is Awesome" from The Lego Movie, with special guest appearances from Questlove and Will Arnett. It was big, colorful splash of mayhem in the middle of a subdued evening, and just what the viewers at home needed. ”

“ Political statements during acceptance speeches are generally frowned upon, but Patricia Arquette has already won our hearts with her performance in Boyhood.
So when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she used her considerable cachet to give a shout-out to the causes she supports. Arquette even won applause from Meryl Streep when ended her speech with, "To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else's equal rights. It's our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America." Who was going to play off America's favorite mom? Nobody. Well done, Patricia. ” People: Patricia Arquette

“ Graham Moore, Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game, remarked that he thought it was "the most unfair thing that I think I've ever heard" that he was standing on the stage to accept the honor, and Alan Turing was not.
So Moore used his moment in the spotlight to convey this powerful story: "When I was 16 years old, I tried to kill myself because I felt weird and I felt different and I felt like I did not belong. And now I'm standing here. "And so, I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she's weird or she's different or she doesn't fit in anywhere. Yes, you do. I promise you do. Stay weird, stay different, and then when it's your turn, and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message to the next person who comes along." ” People: Graham Moore

“ It was a huge night for Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu, who came to the stage multiple times to claim Oscars for Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay and ultimately Best Picture.
But our favorite moment (other than Sean Penn's off-the-cuff joke of, "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" before announcing Birdman as the Best Picture winner) came when Iñárritu accepted the Oscar for Best Director. He joked that he was wearing a good luck charm when he previously won an honor for the film, and claimed that on Oscar night, he was wearing another one: the real tighty whities won by Michael Keaton in Birdman. "They are tight, smell like balls, but they worked. I am here," he joked as the audience roared with laughter. He then thanked a number of people and apologized, likening his speech to "slow motion vomit." We're pretty sure nobody minded. ” People: Alejandro González Iñárritu
