Multistate Outbreak of Human Salmonella Altona Infections Linked to Chicks and Ducklings

As of May 25, 2011, 25 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Altona have been reported from Indiana (1 case), Kentucky (3 cases), Maryland (2 cases), Minnesota (1 case), North Carolina (4 cases), New York (1 case), Ohio (7 cases), Pennsylvania (2 cases), Tennessee (2 cases), Virginia (1 case), and Vermont (1 case). Reported dates of illness onset range from February 25, 2011 to April 25, 2011. Ill persons range in age from less than 1 year old to 84 years old, with a median age is 8 years old. Fifty-two percent are male. Among ill persons, eight have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.
