The Buzz: A spooky basement, home movies on film reels, and scary kids in cornfields? This movie is packed with horror movie tropes, but it looks to be a recipe for at least two and a half weeks' worth of nightmares. Hopefully sequel Sinister 2 won't make you, er, 2 your pants. - Chako Suzuki
American Ultra (2015)- Action | Comedy

The Buzz: As a fan of Adventureland, I was immediately intrigued when I heard that Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart were teaming up for another film. And then I watched the trailer... Jesse Eisenberg as a stoner/sleeper CIA agent with the ability to kill with the spoon? I don't think I've laughed that hard at a trailer in a long time. I just pray that Kristen is also deep undercover. Fingers crossed. - Michelle Nelson
Hitman: Agent 47 (2015)- Action | Crime | Thriller
An assassin teams up with a woman to help her find her father and uncover the mysteries of her ancestry.
Director:Aleksander Bach |

The Buzz: You almost have to empathize with everyone involved in trying to make Agent 47 happen, especially when the movie is from 20th Century Fox, who might need an entire generation to pass before we begin to forget about their recent Fantastic Four reboot. Wisely, this cast is truly international, so the overseas grosses could surprise. Pulling back the curtain on the International Contracts Agency is a smart idea, too; it's not like the video game has crossed over into the mainstream, so it's cool to see the story attempt to pull people into the game's mythology.
Grandma (2015) - [Limited]- Comedy
Self-described misanthrope Elle Reid has her protective bubble burst when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage, shows up needing help. The two of them go on a day-long journey that causes Elle to come to terms with her past and Sage to confront her future.
Director:Paul Weitz |

The Buzz: Lily Tomlin is not your grandma's grandma. Age has not mellowed her acerbic wit, for one, and she's more modern than the generations in her wake, which is why director Paul Weitz created this role just for her -- the coolest grandma a teen in trouble could ask for. All of us could use some of Tomlin's wisdom and advice, delivered straight up, as only she can do. - Melissa Rotj
6 Years (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | Romance
A young couple bound by a seemingly ideal love, begins to unravel as unexpected opportunities spin them down a volatile and violent path and threaten the future they had always imagined.
Director:Hannah Fidell |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: A few days after I saw Hannah Fidell's A Teacher, I realized it was the first time I could remember watching something about Millennial struggles that wasn't concerned about whether or not the characters were relatable, cool, or otherwise. Instead, Fidell a world where a young couple who have been together for years find themselves at early crossroads in their respective professional lives while the unspoken subject of drug and alcohol addiction informs the story as it develops. I have a feeling 6 Years might fly under the radar but hope it has its champions. Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield are both excellent. - Arno
Digging for Fire (2015) - [Limited]- Drama
The discovery of a bone and a gun send a husband and wife on separate adventures over the course of a weekend.
Director:Joe Swanberg |
|

The Buzz: Thanks to The One I Love, I can now get excited when indie actors get wrapped up in a mystery. - Arno Kazarian
She's Funny That Way (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy
On the set of a playwright's new project, a love triangle forms between his wife, her ex-lover, and the call girl-turned-actress cast in the production.
Director:Peter Bogdanovich |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Peter Bogdanovich hasn't made a comedy picture in so long, it's no wonder She's Funny That Way might bring Woody Allen to mind for most people - especially anyone who has never seen They All Laughed or Noises Off... (most everyone has seen What's Up, Doc?, right?). If the public word of mouth is at least as strong as the critical review, Bogdanovich and his excellent cast might have the final sleeper hit of the summer as we inch our way into the fall movie season.
Learning to Drive (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama | Romance
As her marriage dissolves, a Manhattan writer takes driving lessons from a Sikh instructor with marriage troubles of his own. In each other's company they find the courage to get back on the road and the strength to take the wheel.
Director:Isabel Coixet |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Surprising to see director Isabel Coixet, known for uncompromising storytelling, venture into the world of light drama that seems heavy of metaphors and life lessons. Not that any critic who has pointed this out has gone on to disparage Learning to Drive since the performances by Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley. Clarkson's character has to overcome grief in order to move on in her life, while apparently there's a shock or two with Kingsley's character's backstory.
Some Kind Of Beautiful (2014) - [Limited]Comedy | Romance
