Syfy is adapting another beloved science fiction story as a TV series, announcing Wednesday that it is partnering with scribes David Eick and Josh Pate to turn Frederik Pohl’s novel “Gateway” into a one-hour scripted series.

The series, which hails from studios Entertainment One Television and Universal Cable Productions, is set after the discovery of an asteroid teeming with the long-abandoned spaceships of an advanced alien race known as the Heechee. The lead character is prospector Robinette Broadhead, who gambles everything on a journey to discover alien artifacts. A nightmare mission results in him receiving extraordinary wealth and luxury — but also leaves him haunted by the loss of his crewmates, including the love of his life.
