We got the Fire TV on the release day and just recently I ordered a couple Fire TV sticks to give as gifts. Those come with a basic remote (no voice search) so I ordered one of these voice remotes to give as well to my parents.
There's a lot to like about the Fire TV (and somethings, like the games, I've been disappointed with). One of the best things about the Fire is the remote, which is an odd thing to say. My wife said it best when she, out of the blue, started praising the remote. It's perfectly designed. Most remotes are too busy, complicated, lots of buttons. If you don't have time or inclination there's just too much stuff going on. On the other side, some remotes barely offer any functionality. This remote works perfectly with the streamlined user interface on the Fire TV. It has all the key buttons and offers complete menu control. I also have the controller, which can also serve as a remote, but this remote is the one we use. My 2.5 year old daughter knows how to navigate to her shows and pause and stop! And she only watches tv a small part of the day.
The size is great for use, but it does get easily lost, slips between the cushions of our couch, or blends in with other dark items. Batteries come with it and they last a fairly long time.
Of course, the reason why this remote costs extra for the stick is the voice control. And that's an amazing feature. It really works. I have an XBox with the Kinect that has voice control, but never use it because it's always just easier to use the controller after the microphone either mishears or doesn't hear what you say. This remote picks up everything and offers a consistent set of choices. It can't quite understand my 2.5 year old, who has a very good vocabulary but a developing pronunciation. So, it might have trouble with accents or other speech issues.
That voice remote save a good bit of time having to hunt down a new movie/show, or start again a regularly watched show. Say the words, make the choice, it starts up.
Amazon's Fire TV Stick is a great streamer because of more up to date hardware and specs when compared to Google's and Roku's but the one thing that makes Amazon's product stand out is the voice search ability.
I wouldn't call it 'essential' or 'indispensable' but voice control is the one feature that give's Amazon's product personality and differentiates it from the competition. If you hate 'typing' with your remote and would rather speak to it when searching for content, this is what you want.
Of course, and understandably, voice search does not work inside all non-Amazon services such as Netflix but it does work on some today and they include Showtime, Hulu, Crackle and Vevo and I expect that more will be added in time.
When deciding whether to get this add-on, I would get the Stick first and, if I find it worth keeping and decided that voice search would improve my experience, I'd get the upgraded remote.
This remote is really easy to use. It has all the buttons you need without having so many buttons that you’re always searching for the buttons that actually matter.
Here is why this remote is exceptional:
Voice Search – Just hold down the microphone button and say what you want to watch. The search results will appear within just a few seconds. Granted the voice recognition isn’t perfect…It’s 2014, not 2054 after all…but the voice recognition works far better (and faster) than trying to type the name of the show you want to watch.
Bluetooth – When you mount your Fire TV, you won’t have to worry about pointing the remote sensor towards the ceiling to get good remote reception. Bluetooth goes right through just about anything.
I purchased this for use with my Nvidia Shield; I use the Shield for XBMC playback, and I wanted a better remote than the Nyko Playpad Pro I had been using before. It surpassed my wildest expectations. It synced right up to Bluetooth and started working without a hassle.
Every button on the remote operates exactly as intended. The Voice Search button obviously doesn't do anything, so if you expect Amazon's Voice Search to magically appear on your device you're sorely mistaken.
I will edit this review once I run the batteries down. I don't know what the battery life of the two AAA batteries that come with it is.
Edit 08/28/2014: I finally ran down the included batteries. Four months of near-daily use, that's incredible!
This remote is awesome, I love Fire TV but this remote is an animal magnet! my dog has gone through 2 of them!. I never had that issue with any other remote ever. Must taste good
Paired with my FireTV without any troubles. I'm not sure how one would get there if all they had was a defective remote they were replacing or they lost the first remote. I had a USB keyboard plugged in, and used it to go to the Settings menu and start the pairing.
The remote works fine, with fresh batteries. But, if you let your Amazon Fire TV go to sleep, and leave the room, the remote keeps on using power to connect to the now sleeping device. In the first two days I had it, I went through two sets of batteries before figuring it out.
To get the most battery life, remove them when not in use. The next version of this needs to have a rechargeable battery. I would pay double just for that.
