This is what it's like to be dumped with fire retardant

DPReview's home state of Washington has been hot and dry of late - severely so. As wild fires rage in the east of the state, local authorities are fighting to contain the flames and prevent property damage. KOMO News videographer Eric Jensen was in the town of Chelan today covering the evacuation, and captured some incredible footage of fire retardant being deployed from a low-flying aircraft. Pixbuf photography analytics tool launches as public beta

Pixbuf, a free social media management service for photographers, has launched a new analytics tool. With Pixbuf, photographers can upload images and then share them directly with several supported social networks, including 500px, Twitter, and Flickr. Pixbuf will then track analytics data related to the images. Read more

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 comes with new image signal processor

Qualcomm has announced the latest generation of its top-end chip, the Snapdragon 820, which is expected to start appearing in devices in the first half of 2016. It comes with the brand new Spectra camera ISP (Image Signal Processor), which it claims will make a number of improvements in image quality. Read more

Samsung launches Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+

Samsung has today announced two new smartphones in its mobile device line-up. With their large 5.7-inch screens the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+ both qualify as phablets and share most components, including camera hardware borrowed from the Galaxy S6. Read more

Elinchrom, Phottix and Sekonic form wireless common standard partnership

Lighting manufacturers Elinchrom and Phottix are collaborating with the light meter brand Sekonic to establish a common standard for communication between wireless lighting devices. Read more

Nikon updates Coolpix P900 and S6700 firmware

Nikon has released firmware updates for a pair of its Coolpix compact cameras. Firmware v1.2 for the Coolpix P900 superzoom resolves issues that can occur when using a wireless remote, while the v1.1 update for the S6700 fixes a rare problem where the camera locks up when powered on. Read more

Corel releases ParticleShop brush plugin for Photoshop

Corel has released a new brush plugin for PhotoShop called ParticleShop. It uses Corel's Painter Particle brush technology to create photo-realistic effects like smoke, dust, fabric, fire, hair, lighting and fur. These effects are added to photos using brush strokes. Read more

Show off: Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II slow-motion and 4K video samples

The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II offers some impressive video capture capabilities including the option to record in 4K. And like the RX100 IV, the RX10 II can capture slow motion video at 240, 480 or 960fps, the latter of which gives the equivalent of 40x super slow motion. Read more

Samyang introduces new Xeen pro video lens series with interchangeable mounts

Korean lens brand Samyang has announced a new series of video lenses under the Xeen name. They feature wide apertures and resolution that the company says is aimed at users who shoot 4K and above footage. There will be 24mm, 50mm and 85mm focal lengths initially, and three more to follow next year. Read more

Panasonic issues lens firmware updates to enable Dual I.S. with Lumix DMC-GX8

With the introduction of the Lumix DMC-GX8 and its new Dual IS mode, Panasonic promised firmware updates for most of its lenses to make them compatible. Included in this round are the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 II, Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2, and Macro 30mm F2.8 among others. Read more

500px launches redesigned iOS app

The online image sharing network 500px has redesigned its iOS app in an apparent move to compete with mobile platforms such as Instagram and EyeEm. With its white background, the new design looks simpler and more streamlined than the previous app. Read more

OM-D and Pen sales help bring Olympus' imaging division back to profitability

Olympus has released its financial results for the first quarter of the company's fiscal year, giving credit partly to its Imaging Systems Business for a 12.3% increase in net sales year-on-year. Its OM-D and Pen series cameras saw a 25% increase in sales volume, helping to compensate for a sliding compact market. Read more

Ricoh offers GR II firmware version 1.10

Updated Tamron 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 lens gains stabilization, sheds weight

Tamron has updated its 18-200mm all-in-one lens. The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Di II VC introduces image stabilization and is the lightest lens in its high-zoom class. Designed for Canon, Nikon, and Sony APS-C camera bodies, it covers a 28-310mm equivalent range. Read more

Researchers at MIT and Google have developed a technique for removing unwanted reflections and obstructions from photos. Taking advantage of the parallax effect, this method could prove quite useful in locations where shooting behind glass or a fence is the only option. Read more

DJI Phantom 3 Standard photography drone unveiled

DJI has announced a new camera drone called the Phantom 3 Standard. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is a quadcopter with an integrated camera able to record video at up to '2.7K' at 30 fps and take 12 megapixel still images in JPEG and DNG formats. The quadcopter is designed for consumer-level use. Read more

Lens Rentals Canada is closing permanently, according to a statement issued by owner Craig Blair on Monday. He cites logistical issues and personal reasons, saying numerous problems with the business 'didn't make it a fun endeavor'. Read more

Photoshop CC 2015.0.1 update addresses healing tool issue

Adobe has issued an update for Photoshop CC 2015 with a number of bug fixes. Notably, an issue with the healing brush tool has been addressed, as users reported that the tool was creating unwanted artifacts in images. Read more

LxMeter transforms your smartphone into a light and flash meter

The LxMeter from Italian manufacturer Optivelox has introduced an accessory that turns your smartphone into a light meter. It's similar to the Lumu light meter, but provides flash meter functionality and is capable of working with Android devices via a dedicated app. Read more

Less is more? Fujifilm X-T10 review

The Fujifilm X-T10 puts many of the X-T1's capabilities into a smaller, less expensive body. It uses the same 16MP X-Trans CMOS sensor and EXR Processor II and, despite a more compact body, offers an additional custom function button and even squeezes in a pop-up flash. Nikon introduces 24-70mm F2.8 VR, 24mm F1.8 and 200-500 F5.6 FX lenses

Nikon has released three new full-frame lenses, including a prime and both standard zoom and super telephoto zooms. The one that will likely garner the most attention is the replacement for the venerable 24-70mm F2.8. The latest version adds Vibration Reduction, electromagnetic aperture control, a new optical construction and more. Also introduced is a 24mm F1.8 prime and a 200-500mm F5.6 super telephoto. Olympus patent points at sensors with built-in polarizing filter

Olympus has patented a technology that records polarization information on the sensor itself, giving the effect of a polarizing filter but without the light cost. The patent is for a two-layer sensor that records color and brightness information on the top layer, just like a conventional sensor, but then has a second layer that captures information about the polarization of the light arriving at the camera. Hot Shots: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 II real-world samples

Sony's Cyber-shot RX10 II looks a lot like its predecessor, with a similar form factor and the same 24-200mm equivalent F2.8 lens. However, it adds some interesting new technology in the form of a 20MP stacked CMOS sensor, enabling 4K video, 14 fps burst shooting and slow-motion video recording. Sony reportedly shifting focus to full-frame cameras

Sony is planning to heavily target the full-frame camera market, according to a report from The Korea Times. At a press conference, Sony Korea's Digital Imaging & Alpha Marketing Department head Bae Ji-hoon said that Sony plans to first target current full-frame camera users, then shift toward attracting new customers who currently use 'entry and mid-class models.' Sensor sales help Sony triple net profit in second quarter

Sales of image sensors helped push Sony to triple its net profit after the second quarter this year, up to 82.4 billion Yen. Sales of Devices, the category containing Sony's sensor business, rose 35% year-on-year, which Sony attributes to higher demand of mobile products containing its sensors. Read more

Fujifilm announces X-T1 IR for infrared photography

Fujifilm has introduced the X-T1 IR, a version of its flagship mirrorless camera designed specifically for infrared photography. The camera captures light from UV, visible, and infrared portions of the spectrum, from approximately 380-1000nm. Everything else is identical to the standard X-T1. Read more

Samsung starts mass-production of thinner 16MP sensor with 1.0μm Pixels

Samsung has announced the start of mass-production of its S5K3P3 image sensor for mobile devices. The new chip is 20 percent thinner than previous generations. At under 5mm thickness, the new sensor can be used in ultra-thin smartphones without creating the protruding camera modules we've seen on some of the latest Samsung Galaxy models. Read more

Canon's multi-purpose ME20F-SH camera reaches ISO 4 million

Canon has introduced its ME20F-SH multi-purpose camera - a black cube with an EF mount and the ability to capture video in near-darkness. With the ability to capture Full HD color video in light levels as low as 0.0005 lux and a top ISO of over 4 million, the ME20F-SH is well suited for surveillance and security as well as wildlife applications.
