Relativity Sale Postponed, $2.5 Million Loan Approved

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Updated: After a flurry of objections this week to the fast-tracked auction of bankrupt Relativity Media, the senior lenders controlling the company agreed to push the sale back two weeks, to October 1, and to delay final arguments about the bid procedures until late August.

Those moves in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan Friday morning meant that what could have been a contentious debate on the future of the entertainment company, founded by Ryan Kavanaugh, was postponed until August 25.

Judge Michael Wiles agreed to postpone the final discussion on bid procedures and approved $2.5 million in additional financing to keep Relativity and the bankruptcy process going until the August 25 hearing. That money is on top of the $9.5 million in interim “debtor in possession” financing that the judge approved on July 31 — the day after Relativity declared bankruptcy.

Attorney Richard Wynne, representing Relativity, agreed to the delayed hearing initially proposed by unsecured creditors »

Kathleen Kennedy Talks Approach Of 'Star Wars' Han Solo Pic, And Fate Of Josh Trank's Spinoff Movie

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

There's a quite a bit to talk about in the "Star Wars" universe, not only with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" arriving in a few short months, but also the "Anthology" series spin-offs that are also coming. Next year, Gareth Edwards will deliver "Star Wars: Rogue One," and the plan had been for Josh Trank to follow in 2018 with his own anthology picture. However, the "Fantastic Four" mess saw him removed and/or exit that job (depending on who you ask) and a spin-off Han Solo movie directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller was put into its place. While speaking to EW, Kennedy revealed the approach to the Han Solo movie, and the fate of Trank's movie. “There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that 'Star Wars' has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot »

Hope 'Hannah Montana' was fun for you, because it was hell for Miley Cyrus

25 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Miley Cyrus got "some body dysmorphia" from her "Hannah Montana" days. Are we surprised by this? (We aren't.) "I was told for so long what a girl is supposed to be from being on that show," said Cyrus in a new interview with Marie Claire. "I was made to look like someone that I wasn't, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn't on that show, it was like, Who the fuck am I?" We should all be thankful that those soul-sucking days are over, not only for Miley's sake ("It was like Toddlers & Tiaras'," she went on) but for our own: who knew she was such an off-the-cuff, freewheeling spirit underneath those pounds and pounds of Disney pageant makeup? A few other choice quotes from the interview: On the nightmare that was "Hannah Montana, »

Xavier Dolan on ‘Tom at the Farm,’ Hollywood’s Diversity Problem

37 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Xavier Dolan’s “Tom at the Farm” opened to strong reviews at the Venice Film Festival two years ago and picked up distribution in roughly 40 countries. But it never found a buyer in the United States until now, when Amplify Releasing opens the French-language thriller in theaters and on VOD. “Tom” follows a young Montreal man (Dolan) who travels to rural Canada for his ex-boyfriend’s funeral.

Dolan’s profile has been on the rise since 2014’s “Mommy,” which won the jury prize at Cannes for the Quebecois director. He returned to the Croisette in May, where he served on the Cannes jury; recently finished filming “It’s Only the End of the World,” starring Marion Cotillard; and is about to start production on his first English-language film, “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” about a closeted Hollywood movie star played by Kit Harington.

TV’s ‘Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ Robert Vaughn on Early Influences, Natalie Wood

42 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With director Guy Ritchie’s new bigscreen take on the beloved ’60s TV spy series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” rolling out globally, the original star of that series, Robert Vaughn, is naturally busy with interviews about his iconic turn as suave master spy Napoleon Solo. Vaughn’s also recently done a one-man stage production as blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo and appeared in TV’s “Law and Order: Svu” and upcoming indie film “The American Side.” His first time in Variety was for performing in the 1954 Los Angeles revival of Gb Shaw’s “Misalliance” for the Stage Society.

Performing Shaw on stage isn’t the obvious path to playing one of our favorite spies.

My goal was always to get better roles and in my case, performing on stage really led to great opportunities. My breakthrough came when I did Calder Willingham’s “End as a Man” on stage and was spotted by Max Arnow, »

David Simon Brings ‘Hero’-ic Nuance to HBO Dramas

42 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

David Simon produces spare, sophisticated unflinching dramas. Which is notable, given his journalistic training, and the fact that his former profession – in its quest for what’s next – often finds scant time for the sort of nuanced look at what ails big cities that Simon has delivered in his dramas.

The Wire,” of course, stands at the heart of that filmography, representing a modern classic devoted to the fruitless nature of the drug war and its toxic effect on both the police and the inner-city residents who have found it to be a lucrative if dangerous source of employment. Yet he has taken other deep dives into urban dysfunction, from “The Corner” to “Treme,” the latter chronicling post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, to his most recent effort, “Show Me a Hero,” a true story premiering Aug. 16 about the blowback against efforts to bring public housing to Yonkers, N.Y.

Raman Hui: The Man Behind Chinese Mega-Hit ‘Monster Hunt’

42 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“All the Hollywood studios want to screen my movie now. They want to see what all the fuss is about,” chuckles animator and director Raman Hui, who is clearly enjoying the success of his debut Asian feature, “Monster Hunt,” which delivered the biggest ever opening at the box office for a 3D Chinese movie.

The live action-cgi hybrid — in which evil humans have driven cute monsters from their homeland — has taken in almost $300 million since its July 16 release, and is still going strong. Hui says he expects to make a sequel. “The audience will be angry if I don’t,” he says. “But they want it next month.”

Hui, who was born in Hong Kong, is no stranger in Hollywood. He spent 20 years as an animator with Pacific Data Images and DreamWorks Animation, where, among his many accomplishments, he designed the titular ogre for “Shrek.” He counts Dwa CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg as a close friend. »
