Weekend Report: 'Ant-Man' Raids Box Office

18 July 2015 10:18 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Ant-Man opened to $58M at the domestic box office, slightly under its projected $60-$65M opening, becoming the 12th film in Marvel's Cinematic Universe to open at #1. On 3,856 screens the film's per screen take was $15,051. It's a good thing that the Paul Rudd superhero film has an "A" CinemaScore as that's the lowest per-screen average of any of the 12 films. Coming in just slightly above Ant-Man is 2008's The Incredible Hulk ($15,810 per) Thor ($16,618) and Captain America: The First Avenger ($17,512). Disney/Marvel's marketing team must be given some kudos though. Even given the strong Marvel brand, the challenges of marketing a character unknown to the public at large, whose power is getting really tiny and controlling ants, was obvious. They wryly dealt with it head-on in their first trailer, where Paul Rudd's character asks if "it's too late to change the name," a scene that, though this can sometimes happen from trailer to screen, »

Eli Roth Producing Snapchat Murder Mystery

16 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Snapchat users will be able to figure out if the butler did it in real time.

In an intriguing, digital era twist, CryptTV, the digital network co-founded by “Hostel” maestro Eli Roth, will host a live murder mystery on the video messaging service this Sunday.

The evening will center on a number of social media influencers, all of whom boast extensive Facebook, Instagram and Twitter followings. As part of the event, they are invited to a party at a mansion, where they will be “killed off” one by one.

After the party ends and the bodies finish piling up, viewers will have 24 hours to scan through CryptTV’s Snapchat for clues to find the killer before the evidence vanishes. Snapchat has a time limit for how long recipients can view their messages, one of the reasons it is more commonly associated with sexting than detective work.

Dave Chappelle: 'The Biggest Enemy of an Artist Is Apathy'

16 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Saturday, at the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation’s Art for Life Benefit on Long Island, Dave Chappelle spoke about how his return to comedy is happening during such a racially turbulent moment in American history:"This is a very surprisingly emotionally charged time,” he said to the AP, “so people like me, I think, are very relevant and necessary in sorting through all this information and emotional content. And when we are at our best, hopefully we are doing a great service to many people." "The biggest enemy of an artist is apathy… A kid gets killed by the police and I buy a T-shirt and before I can wear that one, there's another kid (killed) and I'm running out of closet space." »

How Go Set a Watchman Solves the Mystery of Harper Lee

just now | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Tourists come to Monroeville, Alabama, for one reason: to visit the real-life model of To Kill a Mockingbird’s Maycomb and the birthplace and current residence of its author, Harper Lee. Invariably, they come to the well-preserved county courthouse, which looks a lot like the place where Atticus Finch defends a black man falsely accused of rape, and they visit a stone wall, next to a shake-and-burger shack, that used to separate the houses where Lee and her childhood friend Truman Capote (Mockingbird’s “Scout” Finch and Dill Harris) played and plotted.Mockingbird’s Maycomb was a throwback, a '30s backwater rendered by a New York transplant in the late '50s. On the other hand, the Maycomb of Go Set a Watchman, Mockingbird’s first draft, was contemporaneous, the sketch of a writer suspended between her racially stratified hometown and her adopted liberal refuge. Japan TV Networks to Launch TVer Online Video Platform

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Tokyo — Japan’s five Tokyo-based commercial TV networks will jointly launch a service to stream their new shows on the Internet, starting in October.

Called TVer, the service will offer the shows, including popular variety and drama programs, free of charge with commercials generating revenue. Each network will supply about ten shows weekly and each show will be streamed for about one week.

The service will be operated by Present Cast, a joint venture launched by the five networks and four ad agencies in 2006 to provide an online portal for video content, dubbed Dogatch.

The aim is to both attract younger viewers, who have been deserting terrestrial TV, and to thwart illicit online uploads of copyrighted material.

At least two other video platforms will launch in Japan this fall: Netflix and Bonobo, backed by 29 content owners and representatives known as Japan Contents Group.

'True Detective' Hits the Restart Button in Episode 5

4 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

In the wake of what went down in Sunday's True Detective, it's tempting to think of this season like a video game. True, none of the principals were killed in the massive shootout that ended episode four last week (unless you count Colin Farrell's mustache). Nonetheless, episode five felt a bit like a restart in Grand Theft Auto: After spending a lot of time tooling around California, things went sideways in a major way, but "Other Lives" brings viewers back into the game at more or less the same place they started. Circumstances have changed in the two months since

‘Girlfriend’ L.A. Theater Review: Matthew Sweet Album Reimagined as Bittersweet Stage Musical

4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

“Girlfriend,” a new two-man musical playing through August 9 at L.A.’s Kirk Douglas Theatre, is not your father’s jukebox musical. Unless, of course your father happens to be a fan of veteran alternative rocker Matthew Sweet. In which case, Dad may well be surprised to see how Sweet’s classic 1991 album has become the basis for a bittersweet and winsome love story between two Midwestern boys who’ve just graduated from high school. The witty and well-observed book, by Todd Almond, depicts with heartfelt poignancy the tentative, shuffle-step nature of gay teen romance circa-1990. Will (Ryder Bach) is the obvious outcast of. »

‘True Detective’ Recap: ’Other Lives’

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With only a few more episodes to go in “True Detective” season two, here’s where “Other Lives” — which fast forwards through time after last week’s big shootout — leaves the four main characters:

Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell)

The man who raped Ray’s ex-wife, Alicia (Abigail Spencer), wasn’t actually killed like Ray had been led to believe. Da Davis (Michael Hyatt) informs Ray they picked up someone whose DNA can be linked to the assault on Alicia (and on several others), and now he’s in jail.

The news disturbs Alicia, not because she’s upset that Ray didn’t avenge her attack, but because he told her he did, and in the process destroyed their relationship. The news also sends Ray straight to Frank (Vince Vaughn), looking for answers and packing heat.

Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch)

He informs his trailer-trash mother (Lolita Davidovich) that he’s marrying his pregnant girlfriend. »

Film Review: ‘Safelight’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A sensitive teenager with cerebral palsy, a hooker with a heart of gold, and various other sentient cliches collide in “Safelight,” a bland and unremarkable tale of sad souls and dead-end circumstances from first-time feature director Tony Aloupis. A handful of solid performances and some subtle ’70s period detailing are hardly enough to recommend this flat, predictable drama, which will rely on its few cast names (including Juno Temple and Christine Lahti) to draw a few eyeballs in simultaneous limited/VOD release; like most of its characters, it looks to be headed nowhere fast.

You wouldn’t necessarily know exactly when “Safelight” is taking place, aside from a brief mention of Vietnam and the old-school black-and-white camera used by the lead character. Photography represents one of the few bright spots in the life of shy 17-year-old Charles (Evan Peters, taking an indie breather between “X-Men” movies), who works behind the »

'True Detective' hits the reset button, but is it too late to matter?

A review of tonight's "True Detective" coming up just as soon as I take a micronap... In trying to convince Ray to join the new, covert incarnation of the Caspere task force, Ani tells him that it's never too late to start over again. It may not be too late for Ray Velcoro and doing the right thing, but I fear it may be for me and "True Detective." "Other Lives" is as close to a clean slate as you can get midway through an eight-episode season. The time jump isn't anywhere near as drastic as the two from Rust and Marty's case last year, but those 66 days since the shootout has upended the status quo for all four main characters — Paul now a hero and a detective, Ray now working security for Frank, Frank now living in a much smaller house in Glendale, and Ani getting the Lt.
