Looks like The Cavalry will have company in season three of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.” Variety has learned that Blair Underwood will return to the ABC series to reprise his role as Melinda May’s (Ming-Na Wen) ex-husband Andrew in multiple episodes when the show returns this fall.
In true Marvel fashion, Underwood’s storyline and the status of his relationship with Agent May is being kept under wraps. When we last saw Andrew in the “SHIELD” season two finale, he and May had reconciled and were preparing to take a long-overdue vacation — but things rarely stay quiet in the Marvel universe, especially given that the finale ended with May’s teammate, Agent Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), being swallowed up by the mysterious Kree Monolith, unbeknownst to her friends.
As Variety first reported, season three of “SHIELD” will introduce characters based on Marvel’s “Secret Warriors” comics. In the aftermath of SHIELD’s battle with Jiaying and the Inhumans, Director Coulson (Clark Gregg) will search the world for more powered people and assemble an extraordinary new team to deal with threats unlike the world has ever seen. However, the Agents of SHIELD will soon find out they’re not the only ones tracking down these new Inhumans, with “UnReal” star Constance Zimmer set for a recurring role as the head of a mysterious new government agency that is also on the hunt for the powered individuals, according to EW.
Henry Simmons and Luke Mitchell have also been upped to series regular status for season three, and another Inhuman character, Lash, is slated to appear in the new season, Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb revealed at Comic-Con.
“People seem to respond to powered people on the show and while it’s not going to take over and become what the show’s about, as a texture and flavor of the stories, we really enjoy that,” executive producer Jeff Bell told Variety following the season two finale. “The fact that Inhumans are now out there is something I think we need to investigate and 22 episodes makes for a long season… I do expect for us to investigate this plan that Skye (Chloe Bennet) and Coulson have about starting something that could be pretty entertaining.”
As a neurologist and forensic psychologist who has specialized in working with gifted individuals on the Index, Underwood’s Andrew could feasibly play a pivotal role in Coulson and Skye’s quest to find more Inhumans for the Caterpillar initiative — we’ll find out when “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” returns Tuesday, September 29th at 9 p.m. on ABC.
Powered people not going to take over and become what’s the show about? I don’t believe that. It seems that season 3 is just about Inhumans, and Secret Warriors sounds too much like show for Superhero-Comic-Fanboys for me.
I will watch a few episodes, but I think I will really not enjoy that.
Was it actually confirmed that they went on vacation together or just implied.
I would much rather see May and Andrew be friends, be nice to see a divorced couple being civil to one another without banging.
Only issue..Blair Underwood is box office POISON! How many shows has he ruined? Remember that Ironside reboot? Me neither.
