The Buzz: Illumination Entertainment sits on the Universal Pictures lot and was instrumental in the studio's box-office turnaround thanks to Despicable Me and The Lorax. Illumination's production slate has ramped up with multiple pictures per year starting in 2016, so expect more sequels from these breakout Despicable characters. We're into the idea of a Scarlet Overkill standalone movie, too.
The Gallows (2015)
20 years after a horrific accident during a small town school play, students at the school resurrect the failed show in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy - but soon discover that some things are better left alone.

The Buzz: Seems like it's one thing for a movie to get funded by microbudget pioneer Jason Blum, but it's an increasingly challenging road to getting distribution, never mind becoming box-office success. Since there are no known names in The Gallows cast and its premise seems parody-ready, we're a bit more intrigued than usual when it comes to found-footage horror.
Self/less (2015)
An extremely wealthy man, dying from cancer, undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man. But all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body's origin and the organization that will kill to protect its cause.
Director:Tarsem Singh |

The Buzz: There are welcome components here -- Tarsem Singh directing, Ben Kinglsey representing elite society, Ryan Reynolds playing a vessel -- but will they come together? We're less concerned with the look of the movie (it's Tarsem, hello) than with the story; can it hold up for two hours?
Boulevard (2014) - [Limited]
A devoted husband in a marriage of convenience is forced to confront his secret life.
Director:Dito Montiel |

The Buzz: For those of us who always loved Robin Williams in dramatic roles, director Dito Montiel seems to give him a proper farewell with this story of a man who confronts himself in later life.
Do I Sound Gay? (2014) - [Limited]- Documentary
An upcoming documentary about the stereotype of the "gay voice".
Director:David Thorpe |

The Buzz: Finally, there's a documentary for those of us who were sent to speech classes in elementary school in an attempt to get rid of our lisps. As Buddy Cole said: "Such a lot of fuss over a few extra Ss."
Tangerine (2015) - [Limited]
A working girl tears through Tinseltown on Christmas Eve searching for the pimp who broke her heart.
Director:Sean Baker |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Sean Baker's LA drama was shot on an iPhone 5S, features two transgender leads, was backed by the Duplass brothers, and debuted at Sundance, so clearly it has received a fair share of press in the months leading up to its theatrical release. It's key to commercial success might be the fact that the movie apparently is wild, sincere, and unapologetic.
Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot (2014) - [Limited]- Documentary | Biography | Sport
A documentary that follows the early career of basketball star Dirk Nowitzki, his relationship with coach and mentor Holger Geschwindner, and their path to NBA glory.
Director:Sebastian Dehnhardt |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Dirk Nowitzki, who has one of the most detailed Wikipedia pages around, is a prime subject for a documentary because his story will appeal to more than his followers and sports fans in general. For audiences who are unfamiliar with Nowitzki's story, his relationship with his mentor Holger Geschwindner should create great word of mouth for the movie.
Meet Me in Montenegro (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama | Romance
A comedy centered on a failed American writer who enters into an affair after a chance encounter with a European dancer.
|
|

The Buzz: Savvy indie distributor The Orchard should do a good job getting this European romantic comedy, that was filmed over a four-year period, to the right audience.
