Box Office: ‘Ant-Man’ Large with $58 Million, ‘Trainwreck’ Solid with $29 Million

12 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney/Marvel’s “Ant-Man” is living large, heading for a $58 million opening at the U.S. box office, while Amy Schumer’s raunchy “Trainwreck” looks likely to launch with $29 million.

Updated estimates showed both new entries finishing at the lower range of Friday estimates — which had hit $65 million for “Ant-Man” and $35 for “Trainwreck.” And Universal’s second weekend of “Minions” slid 60% to a projected $47 million following its stellar start.

Ant-Man,” with Paul Rudd portraying a decidedly different Marvel superhero, dominated Friday’s moviegoing with $22.6 million at 3,856 locations. The comic-book adaptation, directed by Peyton Reed with Michael Douglas and Corey Stoll also starring, has received impressive audience support with an A Cinemascore — an indication that the film should show traction at multiplexes in the coming weeks.

Rudd portrays a con-man who uses his power — a suit that enables him to shrink while increasing his strength — to save the world. “Ant-Man,” one »

Miramax for Sale — But $1 Billion Pricetag May Be Too Rich

17 July 2015 4:37 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Miramax, the once-gold plated studio that owns films like “Shakespeare in Love” and “Gangs of New York,” is looking for a buyer, sources familiar with the situation confirmed.

The brand created by Harvey and Bob Weinstein could be a significant plum for buyers starved for content to fill expanding digital platforms, because Miramax controls a library of about 700 films that includes “My Left Foot,” “Sex, Lies and Videotape” and “The Piano.”

A report from Bloomberg quoted sources saying the studio hopes to attract bids of up to $1 billion, though the current owners — led by Colony Capital and Qatar Holding — declined to comment. The studio was said to be interviewing investment banks about a transaction.

Qatar, Colony and builder Ron Tutor bought Miramax in 2010 from the Walt Disney Co. for $660 million, though Tutor later sold his stake to Qatar Holding. The studio theoretically could be of interest to expanding streaming services like Netflix, »

Bill Cosby: Scandalous New Details Emerge in New York Times Story

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A newly-released deposition stemming from a 10-year old court case against Bill Cosby presents more damaging details about how the once-beloved entertainer used his fame and drugs to pursue young women.

On Saturday, the New York Times released portions of a nearly 1,000-page transcript of a deposition that the paper obtained through a court reporting service. A shorter memorandum of the 2006 case was recently unsealed by a federal judge, leading to the revelation that Cosby had admitted to giving women Quaaludes with the intent of having sex with them.

Cosby has not been charged with a crime and has denied sexually assaulting women. But the transcript provides explicit details of his pursuit of what he called “rendezvous” with various women over the years. He offers great detail of his calculated seduction of the plaintiff, Andrea Constand, who has said she was drugged and molested.

He admitted, for example, that after »

Review: 'Hannibal' - 'Digestivo': Pig pen

29 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "Hannibal" coming up just as soon as I erect some foster homes and torment some children... "I don't want to think about you anymore." -Will It's a shame NBC couldn't wait one more week before dumping "Hannibal" and "Aquarius" on Saturday nights, because "Digestivo" offers such a clean break between season 3's first half and whatever's coming in its second. In tying up Hannibal's fugitive adventures and killing off Mason and Cordell, "Digestivo" was also easily the most coherent episode of the season so far. That's not to say that it wasn't without its baroque touches, particularly in Mason's porcine choice of a surrogate to carry the fetus created from his sperm and Margot's egg. But as the conclusion to this stretch of the story — really, to the first two and a half seasons of "Hannibal" — there was a certain level of actual plot logic, »

Hannibal Recap: Where You Can Always Find Me

29 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

"Digestivo” is an ellipsis of an episode, the transitional, and transitory, chapter that skulks between the season’s two halves. It begins with Hannibal Lecter sawing into Will Graham's skull; it ends with Will Graham saying goodbye to Hannibal Lecter. In the 45-minute interval those two moments, life is engendered and life is ended and Will and Hannibal's relationship reaches its inevitable conclusion. It’s an appropriate first episode in the wake of NBC’s unceremonious dumping of Hannibal into the Saturday night graveyard slot, where they hope the show will die out of sight.Without remorse or consolation, director Adam Kane tosses us into the thralls of the episode: A storm of Polizia boots ascend stairs as music culled from the nightmares of freakshow performers plays. The police smash into the room where Hannibal is cutting into Will's head, where Jack sits and watches. They're not here to make any arrests, »

Film Review: ‘Antonia.’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Antonia Pozzi was an Italian poet.” That terse description, augmented only by the dates of her birth and death (at age 26), is all the English-language Wikipedia entry has to offer on the tragic literary figure whose life inspired Ferdinando Cito Filomarino’s “Antonia.” Though the helmer’s impressionistic debut celebrates the “plainness” of Pozzi’s poetry and the unique “style that doesn’t feel like style” it exhibited, as biopics go, the project offers few additional clues as to her significance — and therein lies the paradox of this elegantly conceptualized but frustratingly de-contextualized film: One really ought to be familiar with Pozzi’s work in order to appreciate this wispy sketch of the years she spent finding her voice and seeking a supportive audience. Meanwhile, for neophytes, the fashionable but narratively flat pic feels too much like an advert for a line of elegant sweaters, while the model herself remains a mystery. »

Ricky Gervais Points Out That 82-Year-Old Video of Queen Elizabeth II Isn't News as Nazi Salute Meme Takes Over

1 hour ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Ricky Gervais can only hope that no one starts poking into his decades-old home videos. "If the Queen does another Nazi Salute let me know about it. Until then...she was 7 and it didn't even have it's eventual context. Not news," the British star tweeted Saturday after The Sun published a so-called "secret" video of Queen Elizabeth II raising her arm in a Nazi salute. Make that, QE2 making that gesture 82 years ago, when she was a roughly 7-year-old princess. "Now I'm terrified someone is going to dig up a photo of me praying when I was 7," Gervais continued, serving as a voice of reason amidst the fuhrer, er, furor. "Never mind the queen, I actually looked »

Bill Cosby Reveals Tactics for Sleeping With Women, Admits Paying Hush Money in New Documents

1 hour ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

New revelations from Bill Cosby's decade-old court documents reveal his comments about sexual relationships with women and show that he was chastised by the plaintiff's lawyer for his cavalier attitude.  The deposition, which has been obtained in full by the New York Times, dates from Sept. 29, 2005, with the performer speaking under oath in a sexual assault case brought by Andrea Constand. Excerpts from the deposition went public earlier this month after a judge agreed to unseal the court findings. Activia is doing Jamie Lee Curtis' body good. And it doesn't seem to be hurting her sense of whimsy, either! The Halloween goddess attended fight-game tournament extravaganza Evo 2015 in Las Vegas this weekend with hubby Christopher Guest and their two kids, but they either didn't want to cause a stir with their famous faces or they're just that into gaming. (Who knew?!) So they went in costume, of course! "Grad trip to @evo2k. 2 stay incognito was Vega who wears a mask. @StreetFighter family. DJ, Dr. Bosconovich, Makoto," Curtis shared a pic after the fam had pulled off their covert op. Mask-wearing, claw-wielding Vega appears in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, while »
