Saturday Report: 'Minions' Cool Millions

9 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Universal is estimating that Minions, the 3-D prequel to their Despicable Me franchise is heading to an astonishing $120.9M opening weekend. The CG animated flick from Illumination Entertainment marched into 4,301 venues Friday, the most North American venues in Universal's history, and left with $46.2M for the day. Thus Minions is now vying for the title of the biggest animated opening of all time (not adjusted for inflation). It appears it will surpass 2004's Shrek 2 with $108M ($919.8M worldwide cume), 2010's Toy Story 3 with $110.3M ($1.06B worldwide cume), and even 2007's mammoth Shrek the Third opening with $121.6M ($799M worldwide cume). Warner Bros. is reporting that The Gallows, their R-rated horror flick, made $4.5M in 2,720 venues for an estimated $10.8M weekend (depending on how the Twitter-sphere treats it). Focus Features' Self/Less, with Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley, opened in 2,353 venues and made $1.9M on its way to a likely, »

‘Box’ Director Florin Serban on Why He Set Up an Acting School in Bucharest

43 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic — In 2010, Romanian helmer-writer Florin Serban nabbed several prizes at the Berlinale with his impressive feature debut “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle.” After training the non-pro youths who play the juvenile delinquents in that film, he decided to open an acting school in Bucharest. One of the graduates of his school, 19-year-old Rafael Florea, takes the lead in his latest, “Box,” which world premiered in competition at Karlovy Vary Film Festival this week. Shot on 35mm, the drama follows the budding relationship between an ambitious gypsy teen, who is starting on the boxing circuit, and an older, married actress.

Serban says, “I started The Acting School four years ago. It is a personal project, very dear to me. It is partially funded through tuition from people that can afford to pay it, and by me, for people that couldn’t afford tuition but have something ‘going on, »

Quentin Tarantino Says Ennio Morricone Will Score ‘Hateful Eight’ & Suggests He May Do A TV Mini-Series Again

59 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Quentin Tarantino had just dropped the first-ever seen seven minutes of his Western “The Hateful Eight” on audiences at Comic-Con. The movie is a Western, but also a chamber drama of sorts, eight rough and tumble men and women stuck in a haberdashery during a Colorado snowstorm. There’s bounty hunters, ex-Confederate soldiers, prisoners, everyone has an agenda and no one can be trusted. Shot in 70Mm, audiences in San Diego were wowed by the footage, but perhaps more interestingly, the director revealed some heretofore unknown details. Tarantino says legendary film composer Ennio Morricone is going to score the wintry western. And while that’s exciting news, we should caution, Morricone was supposed to write original music for “Inglourious Basterds” and that never happened. And then during “Django Unchained,” Morricone put Tarantino’s slavery epic on blast and skewering the director for the cartoonish violence in his film. The composer »

Ennio Morricone To Score ‘Hateful 8′, Quentin Tarantino Reveals – Comic Con

1 hour ago | Deadline | See recent Deadline news »

Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone will be doing an original score for Quentin Tarantino’s new movie The Hateful 8, Tarantino said today during the film’s panel at Comic-Con. It will be the first Western score for the prolific Morricone in 40 years and reunites the two after some harsh words were apparently smoothed over after their collaboration on Django Unchained. The two previously worked together on Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies and Inglourious Basterds, but… »

Karlovy Vary Review: Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's Stylishly Sick 'Goodnight Mommy'

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The stealthiness of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's "Goodnight Mommy," which creeps around making the noise of someone trying to make no noise, is a good parallel for the sort of life the film has had since its Venice premiere: quietly building both arthouse buzz and picking up genre admirers while it makes the festival rounds. Catching up to it at its Karlovy Vary International Film Festival berth this week, it's easy to see what the fuss is about: it's a resonant, atmospheric horror film that treats its genre and its audience with unusual respect, before escalating in its last moments to a brilliantly uncompromised finale. This is deserving of special mention because in walking the line between indie/arthouse and genre, like David Robert Mitchell's "It Follows," for example, or even something like "The Babadook" which in themes of the potential monstrousness of motherhood more closely parallels "Goodnight Mommy, »

Exclusive new art for #BatmanvSuperman: Dawn of Justice revealed. #Sdcc pic.twitter.com/MtcABpVowF — Batman v Superman (@BatmanvSuperman) July 11, 2015 Also, in another tidbit of Batman v Superman news, last night director Zack Snyder treated beleaguered fans (in line for ten hours at that point, and getting ready for another ten hours of waiting) by driving up in the Batmobile. Snyder pulled up, hopped out, and threw t-shirts into the crowd, as you can see for yourself below. Rather nice of him. »

Comic-Con: 8 Things You May Not Know About MTV’s Scream

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In the original film, Scream released back in 1996, Drew Barrymore is in the first scene talking to a stranger on the phone. We hear this eerie voice ask Drew, “What’s your favorite scary movie?” That is one of the more memorable lines from the film. In the pilot episode of the new MTV television show bearing the same title, one of the first scenes is very familiar to the original film although now the murderer is texting his targeted victim as opposed to calling her. We sat down for an interview with Executive Producers Jaime Paglia and Cathy Konrad and cast members Bella Thorne, Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Amadeus Serafini, and Conner Weil to find out some details about the new series. Rumor: Bounty Hunters May Still Center In The Plot For Heist Movie ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We may have never received an official announcement regarding the unconfirmed rumor of Colin Trevorrow helming “Star Wars Episode IX” yesterday, but that doesn’t mean interesting developments haven’t been happening in the Force lately. The good folks over at Bloody-Disgusting recently came across some exclusive plot details for the potentially dark and gritty “Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One” and it’s news that should be intriguing enough to turn the heads of even the more cynical fans of the franchise. Earlier this week, we found out Darth Vader is likely slated to make an appearance in “Rogue One”— this makes sense, the movie takes place before the events of “A New Hope” and the film centers on a band of rogue rebels trying to steal the plans for the Death Star before it’s built. But now we’re hearing a few more familiar faces will be added to the mix as well. »

Pan Comic-Con Panel Recap: The Peter Pan Origin Film Takes Flight in Hall H

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

From the first images and trailer alone, Joe Wright’s Pan seems like a wondrous and highly theatrical take on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of the flying boy who goes to Neverland. It’s been awhile since a new adaptation of this tale has hit the multiplexes, and director Wright has a knack for taking old stories and giving them a great, visually alluring revival, including his recent Anna Karenina. At the 2015 Comic-Con panel, Wright, along with Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, and Peter Pan himself Levi Miller, talked with moderator Aisha Tyler about how the director’s vision for the film was totally fresh and revitalizing, the use of practical sets and models, and how the tone of Barrie’s original informed Wright’s approach to the characters of Pan, Blackbeard, Tiger Lilly, and a young Hook.

Katherine Heigl on Marriage Equality, Kissing Alexis Bledel at ‘Jenny’s Wedding’ Premiere

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage was very much front and center at Friday night’s premiere of “Jenny’s Wedding” at the Directors Guild of America as part of Outfest.

“I get very emotional and I cried,” recalled Katherine Heigl on the red carpet. “I was very grateful — grateful that our country has seen the light and is encouraging others to do the same.”

Heigl portrays the titular Jenny in the film, playing a buttoned-down Cleveland social worker who is openly gay — except with her family — and decides to marry her roommate, played by Alexis Bledel. IFC is releasing the movie on July 31.

“I loved making out with Alexis,” Heigl said.

The film, shot two years ago, was selected for Outfest several weeks prior to the Supreme Court ruling.

“Doing this at Outfest feels like the right time and the right place,” Heigl noted. “I »

Among the growing list of comics, movies, and TV shows they have on their plate, Marvel and Netflix today have given us a little taste of what to expect from their upcoming “Jessica Jones” series, releasing the show’s first official photos. That man, as most of you already know, is Luke Cage and it will be interesting to see how large of a role the character has on the show. It was announced in March that Luke Cage, »

Green Lantern Reboot Officially Titled Green Lantern Corps

2 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As the Warner Bros. presentation began in Hall H at Comic-Con this morning, the studio took an opportunity to tout its DC Comics Universe. A video played on the screens surrounding the audience that began with images of the various comics before touting the films that WB has scheduled coming up with concept art and logos: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Suicide Squad Wonder Woman Justice League 1 & 2 The Flash Aquaman Cyborg Green Lantern Corps. While it was neat to get brief glimpses at concept art of Ezra Miller as The Flash (the film very much looks to be WB/DC’s “fun” superhero movie), the biggest news to come out of this video was that the Green Lantern reboot expected in 2020 will indeed be titled Green Lantern Corps. Top 5: San Diego Comic-Con, Star Wars News, First Goosebumps Trailer

2 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Currently available on VOD is writer/director Ted Geoghegan's horror tale We Are Still Here. The Dark Sky Films release debuted at SXSW earlier this year and played at the genre favorite Stanley Film Festival in Estes Park, Co shortly thereafter. Starring Barbara Crampton and Andrew Sensenig as a wife and husband who move to a quiet New England town following the tragic death of their only son, the pic is a suspenseful and fun ride as the couple learns that their new home harbors more death and darkness than the peaceful scenery would indicate. At its core, We Are Still Here is a film about dealing with tragedy and loss wrapped up in a haunted house conceit. Crampton and Sensenig's characters are grieving with the premature death of their son and, ultimately, they learn that moving on has nothing to do with changing your surroundings and everything to »

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Comic-Con Panel Recap: Laughs and Gaffes

Taking a break from his Sherlock Holmes franchise, director Guy Ritchie is prepping for the release of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the much-anticipated adaptation of the television series of the same name, starring Armie Hammer and the Man of Steel himself Henry Cavill. The trailer suggests the same slick, funny, and appealingly lensed spy-craft and detective work that has informed his adaptations of the Holmes legend, but the chemistry between Hammer and Cavill seems totally their own. The two young actors seemed to have a snappy comic repartee both in the trailer and on the panel, which offered some insights into how Ritchie approached the adaptation, the casting and process for the actors, and the enthusiasm for the material on set. Archer staple Aisha Tyler moderated the panel, which included Cavill, Hammer, Alicia Vikander, and Elizabeth Debicki, and the show opened with a message from Ritchie, who hilariously kept messing »

Batman V Superman Comic-Con Panel Recap: Emotion, Fisticuffs, and Man Of Steel Flashbacks

One of the most striking memories of my five times at Comic-Con was undoubtedly in 2013, when a month after the release of Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder took the Hall H stage to thank fans for turning out for the film, and revealed a surprise announcement: a Batman vs. Superman movie. In my five years at Comic-Con, I’ve never seen a crowd so electrified—a group of people behind me were literally crying tears of joy when the logo came on the screen. Today, two years later, Snyder took the Hall H stage with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice already in the can, and offered an extensive preview to the Comic-Con audience that included new footage from the highly anticipated superhero film that is not online. Batman v Superman kicks off the DC Movie Universe in earnest when it hits theaters next March, and during today’s Comic-Con panel, »
