Quentin Tarantino Says Ennio Morricone Will Score ‘Hateful Eight’ & Suggests He May Do A TV Mini-Series Again

58 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Quentin Tarantino had just dropped the first-ever seen seven minutes of his Western “The Hateful Eight” on audiences at Comic-Con. The movie is a Western, but also a chamber drama of sorts, eight rough and tumble men and women stuck in a haberdashery during a Colorado snowstorm. There’s bounty hunters, ex-Confederate soldiers, prisoners, everyone has an agenda and no one can be trusted. Shot in 70Mm, audiences in San Diego were wowed by the footage, but perhaps more interestingly, the director revealed some heretofore unknown details. Tarantino says legendary film composer Ennio Morricone is going to score the wintry western. And while that’s exciting news, we should caution, Morricone was supposed to write original music for “Inglourious Basterds” and that never happened. And then during “Django Unchained,” Morricone put Tarantino’s slavery epic on blast and skewering the director for the cartoonish violence in his film. The composer »

Karlovy Vary Review: Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's Stylishly Sick 'Goodnight Mommy'

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The stealthiness of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's "Goodnight Mommy," which creeps around making the noise of someone trying to make no noise, is a good parallel for the sort of life the film has had since its Venice premiere: quietly building both arthouse buzz and picking up genre admirers while it makes the festival rounds. Catching up to it at its Karlovy Vary International Film Festival berth this week, it's easy to see what the fuss is about: it's a resonant, atmospheric horror film that treats its genre and its audience with unusual respect, before escalating in its last moments to a brilliantly uncompromised finale. This is deserving of special mention because in walking the line between indie/arthouse and genre, like David Robert Mitchell's "It Follows," for example, or even something like "The Babadook" which in themes of the potential monstrousness of motherhood more closely parallels "Goodnight Mommy, »

Rumor: Bounty Hunters May Still Center In The Plot For Heist Movie ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We may have never received an official announcement regarding the unconfirmed rumor of Colin Trevorrow helming “Star Wars Episode IX” yesterday, but that doesn’t mean interesting developments haven’t been happening in the Force lately. The good folks over at Bloody-Disgusting recently came across some exclusive plot details for the potentially dark and gritty “Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One” and it’s news that should be intriguing enough to turn the heads of even the more cynical fans of the franchise. Earlier this week, we found out Darth Vader is likely slated to make an appearance in “Rogue One”— this makes sense, the movie takes place before the events of “A New Hope” and the film centers on a band of rogue rebels trying to steal the plans for the Death Star before it’s built. But now we’re hearing a few more familiar faces will be added to the mix as well. »

Ok, so it’s still unclear who is going to play Green Lantern." Chris Pine maybe? But Today at Comic-Con, Warner Bros. unveiled the next Green Lantern movie will be called “Green Lantern Corps.” which definitely confirms recent rumors that a Green Lantern film would include much more than just the most well-known Lantern Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds once), but several of the famous Lanterns who have appeared in the comics over the years including Guy Gardner and John Stewart (the guy Tyrese is campaigning hard to play). The logo was unveiled during the introduction of the DC portion of the panel. No release date was given, but last WB unveiled their slate a "Green Lantern" film was set for 2020. »

Watch: Saving The World Never Goes Out Of Style In New Trailer For Guy Ritchie's 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.'

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While Steven Soderbergh once developed “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” which likely would have been a cool take on 1960s spy movies ala his homagistic riffs on heist and crime movies (see “Ocean’s Eleven” or “Out Of Sight”), he’s no longer on board. And so Guy Ritchie makes ultra-stylish, ladmag like movies—arguably he’s the English version of Zack Snyder with a lighter touch— so that’s what you’re going to get from his version of ‘Uncle’ which stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centers on U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin. The two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. »

Watch: 'Ash Vs. Evil Dead' Live-Action Trailer is 'Looking Good,' Nay, Great

With the key creative partners behind the original film all returning, there's little chance the new television adaptation of the "Evil Dead" franchise will be deadite-level dumb. But the first full live-action trailer should excite fans more than anything they've seen since "Army of Darkness" debuted more than 22 years back. Why No One Can Agree On Anything About 'True Detective' Season 2

10 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In the modern world of binge-watching and cable cutting, the aspect of water cooler conversation generated from what was once America's most universal bonding ritual is quickly disappearing. Yet there are still TV shows that draw crowds on first airing -- "Breaking Bad" was one recent example. As the AMC drama knocked out its last few seasons with addictive style and balls-to-the-wall storylines, viewers made sure to tune in for the first broadcast. Now, "True Detective" has taken its place as must-see-tv (not must-see-online-whenever-you-have-time), but its title is already in jeopardy just three episodes into Season 2. It's not that it's bad — though some would argue it's worse — or that it's good — though others would say it's better. It's that no one can agree on what it is at all. The most fascinating element of Nic Pizzolatto's follow up to his universally-acclaimed freshman sensation isn't really the show itself. It's »

Let’S Get Lost, Found

11 hours ago | Keyframe | See recent Keyframe news »

Their mix of artistry, voyeurism, and rarefied collector’s pride can make these movies a slightly queasy viewing experience. But it’s perfect for what remains Bruce Weber’s best film, 1990’s Let's Get Lost. The subject is Chet Baker, a jazz trumpeter and singer whose airy stylings on both “instruments,” not to mention his classic good looks, personified a 1950s “West Coast cool school.” By the time Weber got round to him, however, decades of drug addiction had laid siege to Baker’s talent and physical beauty.>> - Dennis Harvey »

When It Comes to Season 6, 'Game of Thrones' Cast and Producers (Like Jon Snow) Know Nothing

And the reason for that has a name: Seth Meyers. Coming off its most controversial season yet, the choice to appoint the affable Seth Meyers as moderator was a perfect one. The tone during the initial round of questioning regarding the season's darkest events leaned heavily towards levity.  Van »
