Spider-Man is going back to his graphic roots. On Thursday, Sony announced a new animated feature for the Marvel superhero from “The Lego Movie” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The movie hits theaters July 20, 2018.
Lord and Miller, the filmmaking duo behind “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” will write the treatment and produce the Spider-Man movie.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman made the disclosure at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Rothman said the film will “co-exist” with the live-action Spiderman universe, but the press release clarifies: “The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.”
Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are on board to produce the picture.
Rothman did not, however, reveal any news on the live-action “Spider-Man” from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe that will debut on July 28, 2017. Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Pascal will produce that movie, which will feature the Peter Parker iteration of the web-slinger.
Stolen emails from Sony Pictures last December revealed that the studio previously tried and failed to recruit Lord and Miller to take over its animation division last summer. The emails revealed that Pascal and studio topper Michael Lynton were looking to “turn the studio around,” trying to court Lord and Miller to head a Pixar-style “brain trust” of filmmakers. The two met with Pascal last summer to discuss what that brain trust might look like.
Lord, however, wrote in an email that “it’s too hard to do great work there” in regards to the Sony job.
Spidey will make his next film appearance in Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” which bows May 6, 2016.
Hire Josh Keaton to play Spidey! Please! That guy is the PERFECT Spider-Man! On that note, can someone please bring the Spectacular Spider-Man show back? That show deserved Emmy Awards!
Jesus! Will they ever stop milking this to death?!
And do what in its place, Ordinary People 2? Death of a Salesman 3D? Seriously, why does everyone conveniently ignore the “biz” in “showbiz” with these butthurt comments?
You know when they’ll stop? When China says so. They rule Hollywood, not America. USA became obsolete for a decade now.
Congratulations to Sony for moving forward with the animated SpiderMan production. Phil Lord and Chis Miller should bring a successul project that Sony needs.
As long as Andrew Garfield has been fired, I’m in. No one wants a punk Spiderman wearing a backpack. I’m all set.
I stopped after SPIDEY 2 hit the screens, 10 or 11 years ago. Tobey MacGuire was great. And they were more than enough to nourish me. Is it possible that there’s more than enough SPIDIES than the culture really needs? Just wonderin’…
I also stopped after Spider-Man 2 (best time to stop), but this animated movie will get me back in theaters for sure. Superhero movies are partly animated to begin with anyhoo, might as well go full toon! It worked for Mask of the Phantasm.
WHO NEEDS IT?
Will someone –ANYONE! —PLEASE text franchise slum Hollywood —a CLUE!
You expect too much from capitalists. “Who needs it”, such meaningless philosophical ponderings for a mega-corporation to concern themselves with.
Spiderman+Movie=Profit has held as true as 2+2=4. Until that equation looks different, you’re going to keep getting spiderman movies. Might as well stop getting bent out of shape over it.
This seems like a ploy by Sony to lay claim to the animated TV rights. Which currently are owned by Disney/Marvel.
I have to do this to read more?… really?… okay.
ok… my bad… I misread hahah… I did not say anything.
Spider-Man Too: 2 Many Spider-Men
Just what we need……….more Spiderman.
I’ll be honest, I like the idea.
But if you have to do it, why the hell a year after the live-action movie? Couldn’t you place it before?
I would find it weird too, if we weren’t already living in a world where Batman gets an animated Lego pic 11 months after he fights Superman in a serious-looking live action pic…
Why would they even do that?
Because animation > live action. Science.
Yay. :)
