BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won its third straight and 28th overall MACFA Championship Sunday afternoon at Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays also claimed Foil and Sabre championships while eight fencers advanced to the individual championship.

Hopkins totaled 98 victories through the A, B and C strips in the team competition to beat out NJIT for the team title. The Highlanders finished in second place with 85 victories and the Cornell Big Red placed third with 82 victories. The Blue Jays claimed the Sabre title with 37 wins to beat out the Big Red, who finished with 32 wins. The Navy Midshipmen took third place with 27 wins.

Sophomore Patrick Rose led the Sabre squad with 13 wins, going unbeaten in the A strip and advancing to the individual championship. Freshman Sandy Vingoe and senior Aravind Menon each went 12-1 in the B and C strips, respectively and advanced to the individual competition. Rose won all four bouts in the individual competition take the title. It is the Blue Jays' 16th individual Sabre title and first since 1999. Vingoe finished in fourth place with a 2-2 record after being eliminated by Rose and Menon lost in the first round. 

NJIT won the Epee title with 36 total wins, with Army taking second place (27) and Hopkins third (25). Junior Mark Zimmermann went 7-6 and advanced to the individual championship from the A strip of the Epee. Freshman Matthias Philippine won eight of 13 bouts in the B strip and advanced to the individual championship. Freshman Denis Routkevitch went 10-3 in the C strip but did not advance to the individual championship. Zimmermann and Philippine each went 1-1 in the individual competition, which was won by Jack Maes of William & Mary. 

Hopkins totaled 36 wins to take the Foil title, with Stevens taking second place (29) and Cornell third (27). Junior Jay Petrie won 12 of 13 bouts in the A strip of the Foil and advanced to the individual championship. Junior Glenn Balbus and freshman Jared LeBron each went 12-0 in the B and C strips, respectively to advance to the individual championship. Balbus finished second in the individual competition with a 3-1 record. Petrie also went 3-1 but finished in third after being eliminated by Balbus. Simon Rizell of NJIT won the individual Foil title.
