Univision Won’t Show the Miss USA Pageant After Donald Trump’s Controversial Immigration Comments

7 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In his quest to become America's next president, Donald Trump used a significant portion of his campaign announcement to insult Mexican immigrants: "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people," he said. Since then, Mexico has threatened to withdraw from the Trump-owned Miss Universe pageant, and Latin singer J Belvin canceled his Miss USA performance. Now Univision is sending an even louder message: The world's largest Spanish-language network will not broadcast the upcoming Miss USA pageant or any of Trump's Miss Universe Organization pageants, it announced on Thursday. Univision says its news division will continue to cover the U.S. presidential election, including Trump. Earlier this year, Univision signed a long-term contract »

Ratings: USA Hacker Drama ‘Mr. Robot’ Opens Ok Wednesday

11 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

USA drama “Mr. Robot,” which was picked up for a second season before it even premiered, opened to decent numbers on Wednesday night — especially considering it was made available four weeks early as part of a unique windowing strategy by the network.

According to Nielsen estimates, “Mr. Robot” averaged a 0.46 rating in adults 18-49 and 1.752 million viewers overall in the 10 p.m. hour, retaining 75% of its demo lead-in from “Royal Pains” (0.61 rating in 18-49, 2.13 million viewers overall). It skewed very male, with about 62% of its 18-49 audience comprised of men.

The pilot of “Mr. Robot” was released online early in part due to a fear of hacking, and has garnered nearly 3 million views across multiple non-linear platforms in the last four weeks.

While the 0.46 rating isn’t anything to boast about, it’s high enough to outdraw other recent basic-cable drama premieres, including USA’s “Complications” (0.41), TNT’s “Proof” (0.37), Syfy »

TiVo CEO Wants Cable Companies to Embrace Cord Cutting

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

TiVo CEO Tom Rogers has an interesting proposition to cable operators. His pitch: Encourage consumers to cut the cord, and still make money from their TV viewing without having to pay any money to broadcast or cable networks.

Rogers’ magic bullet for pay TV operators that also offer broadband access is the company’s over-the-air (Ota) DVR, which is capable of recording shows from broadcast networks like ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox. TiVo has been selling this Ota DVR to consumers for as little as $49 upfront per month, and then making some healthy revenue with its $15-a-month service fee.

At the Bernstein Future of Media Summit, Rogers said Thursday that he wants to take the same technology to operators. “When I talk about the opportunity for a TiVo Ota for the cord cutter, that isn’t just a retail proposition,” he said, according to Reuters. Rogers added that many operators »
