‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Sets Ratings Record

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” continues to grow in popularity, with Sunday’s fifth-season finale drawing the show’s largest audience ever — despite going up against the NBA Finals in most of the country.

According to Nielsen “live plus same-day” estimates, “Thrones” averaged 8.1 million viewers, up 13% from both the previous week (7.14 million) and last year’s finale (7.09 million). The previous series high for the show came with its fifth-season premiere in April, which drew about 8 million.

Sunday’s ratings growth is a continuation of a trend that has seen a show once considered “niche” become cable’s second most popular program, behind only AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ Delivers Amazing Season Finale

The “Game of Thrones” finale also set Twitter ablaze, landing atop the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings weekly top 10 series list with 436,000 event-related Tweets that were seen by a unique audience of 5.1 million people. That »

Like it or not, Jessica Lange is sitting American Horror Story: Hotel out. Yes, the fourth season, Freak Show, was Lange's last...as a full-time cast member (Hey, we believe in the power of Ryan Murphy and think she may pop up once). Lange's been at the center of every season since the start, having played a ghostly neighbor, a wicked nun, a bitchy witch and a prostitute who owned a freak show and then became a TV star. Viewers are going to miss her, and so is the cast. We caught up with the American Horror Story: Freak Show cast to discuss all things Jessica Lange and shocker (we're saying shocker sarcastically in case that wasn't evident), in the video above, they had nothing but nice things to say about the »

Starz Is Moving Ahead w/ Its Serial Adaptation of 'American Gods.' Casting Will Likely Be Closely Watched

1 hour ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The race of the novel's main character, Shadow, is one that's been the source of debate since the novel was published in 2001. I'm not aware that the author, Neil Gaiman, has ever been specific about Shadow's racial make-up, other than to say, "In my head, at least he’s one of those people whose race doesn’t read easily - in the celebrity world, Vin Diesel’s an example of the same kind of look. But it seemed appropriate in a book about America that the hero was of mixed race." It's been argued that, given evidence in the novel, Shadow's mother is African American. But Gaimain has remained seemingly intentionally vague on the subject.  3 years ago, while on tour promoting the 10th anniversary edition of "American Gods," speaking to Collider.com, he addressed the problems faced with bringing his works to the screen, stating: "One of the things I'm »

Is 'Game of Thrones' Serving Fans, or Simply Torturing Them?

1 hour ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The future is shit, just like the past. Cunning fugitive Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) spends much of the fifth-season premiere of "Game of Thrones" lamenting history's endless excrement. Finally free from the cramped crate that's carried him across the Narrow Sea, he is nevertheless bound by the nihilism of dead beetles, as he notes in "The Mountain and the Viper"—bound, after murdering his father and his former lover in "The Children," by the point of his pitiless parable, which is that there's no point at all. In Tyrion's jaundiced view of this mad world, the smashing of "countless living, crawling things" becomes an end in itself.  Read More: "Emmy Watch: Learning to Love 'Game of Thrones'" If the aforementioned pair of brutal, brilliant entries from the final stages of season four marked the culmination of years spent learning to love "Game of Thrones," and my favorable review of the current season's initial. »
