The Buzz: "Recently I read that Pete Docter came up with the concept of Inside Out when his bubbly young daughter turned into an angst-ridden teen. As a fan of Docter's films I was already excited to see the film, but knowing it was also a way to figure out what was going on in his daughter's mind just warms my heart. It also doesn't hurt that it has an amazing voice cast including Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Bill Hader." - Michelle Nelson
Dope (2015)- Comedy | Drama
Life changes for Malcolm, a geek who's surviving life in a tough neighborhood, after a chance invitation to an underground party leads him and his friends into a Los Angeles adventure.
Director:Rick Famuyiwa |

The Buzz: Alongside Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Dope was the other feature-film breakout at Sundance early this year, snatching up a major distribution deal as writer/director Rick Famuyiwa (The Wood/Brown Sugar) returned to his indie-filmmaking roots and introduced the movie-going world to his stars Shameik Moore and Kiersey Clemons. Of course we're also happy to see Tony Revolori follow-up The Grand Budapest Hotel as part of another strong ensemble.
Infinitely Polar Bear (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama
A manic-depressive mess of a father tries to win back his wife by attempting to take full responsibility of their two young, spirited daughters, who don't make the overwhelming task any easier.
Director:Maya Forbes |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Reviews for director Maya Forbes' personal and informed drama have been quite mixed; some say she's glossed over the seriousness of manic depression, while others say her work with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana is on par with much more seasoned filmmakers. Credit is due to Forbes just for getting two superheroes to co-star in her project.
Manglehorn (2014) - [Limited]- Drama
Left heartbroken by the woman he loved and lost many years ago, Manglehorn, an eccentric small-town locksmith, tries to start his life over again with the help of a new friend.
Director:David Gordon Green |
|
The Buzz:
Insightful critic and friend Alonso Duralde comes up with a perfect label for David Gordon Green's current directorial mode in his Manglehorn review, and reinforces the thought that Green's Hollywood flirtation might have been temporary?
Eden (2014) - [Limited]- Drama | History | Music
Paul, a teenager in the underground scene of early-nineties Paris, forms a DJ collective with his friends and together they plunge into the nightlife of sex, drugs, and endless music.
Director:Mia Hansen-Løve |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz:
Dramatizing underground culture can be a dicey filmmaking prospect so we're curious as to how writer/director Mia Hansen-Love handles Daft Punk's origins by contrasting their rise with the story of a fictional DJ collective sweating it out in the same scene.
Gabriel (2014) - [Limited]- Drama | Family | Thriller
A troubled young man searches obsessively for his first love, risking everything in an increasingly desperate pursuit.
Director:Lou Howe |

The Buzz: At the age of 25, Rory Culkin has been positioned for 'a breakthrough' a handful of times already with roles in such movies as Mean Creek and Lymelife, and he's worked consistently - which might be more fulfilling than what can transpire after generating buzz for an indie-movie performance. The same thing has happened with his equally talented brother, Kieran, though Rory has a bunch of projects lined up over the next year or two.
The Overnight (2015) - [Limited]- Comedy
Alex, Emily, and their son, RJ, are new to Los Angeles. A chance meeting at the park introduces them to the mysterious Kurt, Charlotte, and Max. A family "playdate" becomes increasingly interesting as the night goes on.
Director:Patrick Brice |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: There's a mini-trend in indie movies where young-ish married couples learn to let go and either embrace their youth, freedom, impulses, etc. This comedy from writer/director Patrick Brice -- whose other movie, Creep, had its date pushed up to coincide with this release -- titillated Sundance and SXSW crowds, and the trailer is one of the best we've watched in a while.
Plemya (2014) - [Limited]- Crime | Drama
A deaf teenager struggles to fit into the boarding school system.
Director:Miroslav Slaboshpitsky |
|
The Buzz: Director Miroslav Slaboshpitsky's drama was a three-time winner at Cannes as well as a hit with international festival audiences.
