One of the problems with the instant gratification mindset prevalent in today's society is that it fosters a "bread and circuses" attitude. Character development? Why bother - I want to see action NOW. Back story? Why bother - I want to see action NOW. Thoughtful story arc? Why bother... you catch my drift.
At least two reviews here typify this state to which viewers have sunk. Network television (at least on this side of the pond - the BBC continues to produce excellence like Sherlock) is to blame; after all it caters to the lowest common denominator.
Thankfully, Netflix, Amazon's service, AMC and HBO don't have to cater to this mindset and shows like The Americans, Breaking Bad and Sense8 are the result. There is, typical of a JMS production, good character development and groundwork well laid. There is a sterling premise, again typical of the creators of the Matrix. The acting is solid and believable and the characters are already faced with some thought provoking and emotionally charged issues - again, anathema to the instant gratification set.
Many found Season 1 of Babylon 5 difficult to watch, primarily because they didn't comprehend the concept of a story arc (it was the first TV show to actually have one) and Season 1 laid the groundwork for that arc. Those people didn't absorb that groundwork and get to the "A-HA!" moments that happened in ALL the subsequent seasons. I mention Babylon 5 because the creator of that series is at the production helm of this one - and it shows.
This series has all the hallmarks of a thinking person's show and those of us who value and enjoy that will have a great time with it. Bravo Wachowskis and JMS - it was well worth the wait.
