Nikon 1 J5 and Samsung NX500 added to studio test scene

We've just added a pair of compact mirrorless cameras to our studio test scene - the Nikon 1 J5 and Samsung NX500. The J5 brings a 1"-type 20.8MP BSI-CMOS sensor to Nikon's entry-level mirrorless lineup. The NX500 is Samsung's scaled down version of its flagship NX1, using the same 28MP APS-C BSI-CMOS sensor. See how each camera performs in our studio scene. Read more

Photographer creates picture of 100-man orchestra… with the same person playing each instrument

An Oslo musician and photographer has created a photo stitched together using 400 images, showing an entire orchestra with every instrument played by the same person. Violinist Alexander Light created the 200MP picture by shooting percussionist Heming ValebjØrg in every seat on a stage while he played the appropriate instrument for that position. Read more

Marwell Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest now accepting entries

The sixth Marwell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is now accepting entries. This is an annual contest open to wildlife photographers residing in the UK, with a top prize that includes an eight day photography trip in Estonia via Wildlife Worldwide (valued at £1,795/$2,740). Read more

Nikon D3200 firmware C 1.04 available

Nikon has released firmware 1.04 for the D3200. This update addresses an issue with the camera's memory card slot, causing the access lamp to light for too long or the camera to give an error while accessing the memory card. Read more

Miggo Agua IPX3 storm-proof camera bags launch on Kickstarter

Miggo, maker of non-traditional camera straps that convert into wraps, announced in April that it would launch its new 'storm-proof' camera bag Agua on Kickstarter in early June. That crowd-funding campaign is now live. The Miggo Agua bag has an IPX3-standard rating, which means it can protect gear from pouring rain and similar types of water exposure. Read more

Hasselblad returns to roots with new aerial camera series, this time with no moving parts

Hasselblad has announced a new aerial camera that it says provides the 'ultimate' in image quality for aerial photographers. The camera, the Hasselblad A5D, has no moving parts and as such avoids unintentional internal mechanical movements that aircraft vibrations can cause. Read more

Sony rides wave of US Mirrorless sales surge

Mirrorless sales in the USA are rising, with sales values up 16.5% over the past year, says market researcher NPD Group. Sony highlighted the figures while celebrating its own success: with the success of the a7 series helping it generate 66% more income from mirrorless sales over the last twelve months. Sony also points out that the Consumer Electronics Association has recently chosen 'Mirrorless' as its approved term for the class of cameras. Read more

SLR Magic unveils HyperPrime Cine 50mm T0.95 lens and Magic-Rangefinder Cine Adapter

SLR Magic has introduced its HyperPrime Cine 50mm T0.95 standard lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The HyperPrime Lens gives a 100mm equivalent focal length and offers a T0.95 maximum aperture, black anodized finish and weighs 620g/1.4lb. Also introduced is the SLR Magic-Rangefinder Cine Adapter with an integrated focus ring. Shortlisted images from Environmental Photographer of the Year 2015 to go on display

London's Royal Geographical Society is set to play host to an exhibition of the shortlisted entries of the 2015 Environmental Photographer of the Year competition. The exhibition, which opens for three weeks on June 22nd, will feature 111 of the best images as selected by the competition's five judges. The ultimate winners will be announced at a ceremony on 25th June. Read more

Enthusiast stalwart: Nikon D7200 in-depth review

Following up the success of Nikon's D7100 is no easy task, but the D7200 promises some notable feature upgrades. Its 24.2MP APS-C sensor is complemented by an updated 51-point AF system that claims sensitivity down to -3EV. World's highest resolution panoramic photo is stitched from 70,000 images

A team of five photographers has created what they describe as the world's highest resolution panoramic photograph by stitching 70,000 digital images together to create a 365 gigapixel photograph. Recorded using a Canon EOS 70D with the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens on a 2x converter, the picture took 35 hours of shooting over the course of 15 days just to capture. Read more

Before the popularization of color film, most cameras shot exclusively in black and white. Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM real-world samples gallery

The EF 50mm F1.8 STM is Canon's newest iteration of its classic 'nifty fifty' lens. It's a fast, inexpensive normal lens on a full frame DSLR, but also functions as an 80mm equivalent lens on Canon's APS-C bodies. How does it perform in real-world use?  We've been using the lens for a few days and put together a gallery of samples. Phase One XF medium format camera system offers new AF system and touchscreen interface

Phase One has announced its new modular medium format XF camera system. The body features a new 'Honeybee' autofocus platform (created 'in-house'), touchscreen interface, and your choice of optical viewfinders. It supports the company's IQ1 and new IQ3 digital backs, with the latter supporting resolutions of up to 80MP. Also announced today are a pair of Schneider lenses and an updated version of Capture One software. Read more

Lensbaby expands offerings to Fujifilm X mount

Lensbaby has announced availability of several of its most popular lenses for Fujifilm's X mount. The Composer Pro with Sweet 35 Optic, Composer Pro with Sweet 50 Optic, Circular Fisheye and Velvet 56 are all now available for Fujifilm's mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Read more

Kolektio helps capture and share moments among friends

Kolektio is a new app that aims to simplify the process of sharing images among frinds from an event, party or any other 'moment.' Users can create privately shared image albums, so-called moments, in the app and then invite others to either contribute to the album or view the images. Read more

GoPro unveils Hero+ LCD with touchscreen display

GoPro has introduced the Hero+ LCD camera, sharing many features with the entry-level Hero with the addition of a touchscreen. The Hero+ LCD is waterproof to depths up to 40m/131 ft, and adds both Bluetooth and integrated Wi-F with support for the Android and iOS GoPro App. Videos can be recorded at up to 1080p/60, and 8MP still image capture is offered. Mono a mono: Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) hands-on

Leica's new Monochrom M camera brings the black-and-white-only concept up to date with the technological advantages of the latest M (Typ 240) and M-P cameras. The main changes are a switch from CCD to CMOS sensors, and thus the introduction of live view and a jump to 24MP, along with a much better rear screen. We went hands-on with the new black-and-white beauty. Google and GoPro unveil 16-camera 'Array' VR rig

During the re/code Code Conference earlier this week in California, GoPro’s CEO Nick Woodman detailed a rig the company is working on that will accommodate six Hero4 cameras to record multi-angle footage for virtual reality uses. Google revealed a similar setup at its I/O 2015 conference yesterday, with the primary exception being that it holds 16 GoPro action cameras rather than six. The rig is called Array, and it was made in partnership with GoPro for Google's new Jump virtual reality platform. Click through to read more

Google rolls out standalone Photos app with unlimited free storage

Confirming rumors from earlier in the week, Google has announced its new Photos app - a standalone service that separates the photo component of its Google Plus app. It's available now for Google and iOS and comes with unlimited free storage of 16MP or smaller images. Read more

Samsung working on slimmer RWB camera sensors

Photos from a Samsung presentation have emerged online, providing some insight about the company's upcoming image sensors for mobile devices. It appears Samsung is working on chips that use a RWB (red, white, blue) color filter instead of the conventional RGB pattern. This allegedly improves color fidelity and light sensitivity, allowing for smaller pixels. In turn, this could mean smaller camera modules in future smartphones. Read more

Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens launched on Kickstarter

Lomography has launched its new Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens, the second lens it has introduced based on the Petzval optic invented by Joseph Petzval in 1840. This newest Petzval lens features Russian glass optics, is constructed by hand, and is offered in a brass finish. The lens results in photographs with a 'swirly bokeh,' and the strength of the effect can be controlled via a Bokeh Control Ring, a feature not available in Lomography's existing 85mm Petzval. Leica introduces its first ever F1.4 aperture 28mm lens for the M system

Leica has announced the forthcoming availability of its fastest ever 28mm lens for the M-system of rangefinder cameras. The Leica Summilux-M 28mm F1.4 ASPH will arrive in stores from June 22nd, and will be priced at £3975/$5950. Read more

Nikon to offer free newlywed portraits at New York's City Hall next week

Nikon will be offering newlywed portraits for free to couples who marry at the New York City Hall on June 4th and June 5th. Couples married at City Hall will be treated to a free portrait session with pro photographer and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally, working out of a 20-foot 'Wedding Truck' studio. Read more

Toshiba expands its Exceria Pro SD card line to include 64GB and 128GB models

Updated Electronics giant Toshiba has announced higher capacity models of its high-speed Exceria Pro SD cards, increasing the maximum storage available to 128GB. The 16GB and 32GB Exceria Pro cards have existed for some time in European markets. Toshiba claims they achieve read speeds of 260MB/s and write speeds of 240MB/s, and the new 64GB card is said to follow suit. The highest capacity 128GB card offers a read speed of 260MB/s but a write speed of 150MB/s. Read more

Sony launches Z3+ with 20MP camera

When Sony launched its new Xperia Z4 flagship a few weeks back it was a Japan-only release. Today the Japanese manufacturer has announced the Xperia Z3+, which is essentially identical to the Z4 but will be available globally. It includes a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP Sony Exmor sensor coupled with an F2.0 lens offering an equivalent focal length of 25mm. Read more

UPDATED: Leica issues new statement regarding crashes with Monochrom Raw files in Apple's Photos App

Leica has updated users of Apple's Photos and Aperture software regarding crashing issues when DNG files from its new Leica Monochrom (typ 246) are opened. The company says that the photo libraries of these applications will not be damaged by these crashes, and that Apple is working on an update that will resolve the issue.  Read more

DxOMark Mobile Report on HTC One M9

DxOMark Mobile has published their report on the HTC One M9, HTC's latest top-end smartphone. The new model is a touch smaller and thinner than its predecessor, the One M8, but under the hood HTC upgrades the 4MP "ultrapixel" 1/3" BSI sensor of the predecessor to a larger, higher resolution 20MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor. The F2.2 lens provides no optical image stabilization, but the M9 is the first One model capable of recording 4K video. Read our report on DxOMark's findings

Canon EOS Rebel T6s/T6i First Impressions updated with shooting experience

We'd expect image quality from Canon's EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) to be very similar, and so far the 24.2MP APS-C DSLRs haven't surprised us in our studio tests. The real differences between these two models is in the user experience, as the T6s provides advanced touches like a top-panel LCD and rear quick control dial for easier access to exposure settings. Ona introduces black version of the Leica M edition Berlin ll bag

US luxury camera bag brand Ona has announced a new black version of its Berlin ll messenger-style bag. Designed especially for the Leica M system, the Berlin was originally a limited edition model created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Leica, but the Berlin ll went on general release beyond Leica stores. Previously only available in the Vintage Bourbon tan finish, the black version of the Berlin has been created, according to Ona, because so many people asked for it. Read more

Olympus highlights the issues faced by 'DSL-Arm' sufferers, and claims to offer a cure

Olympus USA has produced a spoof documentary that claims to highlight the problems faced by those who spend too long carrying heavy DSLR equipment. The hero of the films, Paul, suffers a condition called 'DSL-Arm,' which is characterized by a dramatic lengthening of the right arm as a result of carrying weighty camera bodies and lenses. Read more

Oppo launches R7 and R7 Plus

Chinese manufacturer Oppo has today launched its new duo of flagship phones, the R7 and R7 Plus. The R7 features a 5" 1080p screen, while a 6" screen with the same resolution places the Plus model firmly into phablet territory. In the camera department both smartphones combine a 13MP sensor with an F2.2 lens but the R7 Plus chip is, like the Huawei P8, of the RGBW variant and supported by laser-AF and a dual-LED flash. Read more

Canon EOS Rebel T6s/T6i added to studio test scene comparison

The Canon EOS Rebel T6s and T6i (760D and 750D) have been in our hands long enough to put together a couple of real-world sample galleries, and now we've added the cameras to our studio test scene comparison tool. The new 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor that these cameras share represents a step forward for Canon's Rebel lineup, which had been using an 18MP chip since the T2i. Read more
