Starz orders series of Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' from 'Hannibal' producer Bryan Fuller

After years in development at both HBO and Starz, Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" is finally coming to television. All it needs now is a cast. Starz today announced an order for "American Gods," adapting Gaiman's 2001 novel in which the deities of ancient myth wander around modern day America in more mortal-seeming forms. It has an impressive creative team, headed by "Hannibal" showrunner Bryan Fuller and "Kings" creator Michael Green. The start of production is contingent on the show finding the right actor to play the central character, known as Shadow Moon. In the press release, Gaiman said, "I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of 'American Gods' to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I'm relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Monday Ratings: Blackhawks' Stanley Cup clincher leads NBC rout

Fast National ratings for Monday, June 15, 2015. The Chicago Blackhawks cemented their semi-dynasty with another Stanley Cup win on Monday night and coverage of the Game 6 clincher helped NBC cruise to victory on Monday night. Interestingly, while NBC's hockey coverage outrated the network's strong regular Monday coverage, removing the network's reality hits from the mix helped Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" rise, while "The Bachelorette" was flat. The night's only other original notable was another week of declines, smaller than last week, for "The Whispers." Let's get to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, NBC averaged a 2.6 rating for Monday night, easily tops in the key demographic. ABC's 1.5 key demo rating and the 1.3 key demo rating for Fox followed. CBS averaged a 1.0 key demo rating for Monday primetime, followed by the 0.4 key demo rating for The CW. Overall, NBC averaged 7.59 million viewers and a 4.2 rating/7 share  for Monday primetime. 'Bloodline' season 1 in review: 'We're not bad people, but we did a bad thing'

It's been almost three months since "Bloodline" debuted on Netflix. In a traditional distribution model, the show's first season would be wrapping up right around now. In the world of the binge, most of the people who cared about that show finished it within a week or two of its release. I took my time, not because I'm opposed to a good binge (I zipped through "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," which debuted only the week before), nor because I felt like "Bloodline" was something worth savoring. Rather, I felt so lukewarm about the three episodes Netflix made available to critics prior to its premiere that I was in no hurry to watch the rest. There was enough there — a great cast, a strong sense of place, a rich atmosphere — that I was willing to see where it was going, but only in those occasional gaps in my schedule where there weren't »

TV that takes us back: The best period piece TV shows, decade by decade

With the aid of stellar costuming and production design, period piece TV shows have transported viewers back to eras long past. Shows like “Mad Men” and “Happy Days” have given TV watchers nostalgia trips and have presented social commentary on both yesteryear and our own time. This Thursday, ABC will add a new period show to primetime: “The Astronauts’ Wives Club,” based on the book by Lily Koppel — in turn based on the true story of the wives of the Mercury Seven astronauts — will transport viewers to the 1950s. Here HitFix takes you through the 20th and 21st centuries, rounding up the best period TV shows that take place in each decade. »

Atticus Ross knows when your film score is being lazy

Atticus Ross spent no time thinking when I asked if he thought Brian Wilson is a genius. He is, said the Academy Award-winning composer. Which is why -- in part -- Ross spent more than a week trying to write just a single minute of music for the Beach Boy's biopic "Love & Mercy," why he felt responsibility to craft something that wasn't "lame" to tell Wilson's troubled history. It's Wilson's legacy that informed Ross' risk-taking action, to chop, screw and build off of stems from Wilson and the Beach Boys' actual recording sessions and make a score that can still stand alone as a singular artwork. Below is an abridged interview with Ross, about his work on "Love & Mercy."  The composer/musician/Nine Inch Nails member also spoke on John Hillcoat's next film, writing with Trent Reznor, ] how Radiohead broke their own mold, making a soundtrack to a drug trip, »

Miss Her Much: 7 times Janet Jackson deserved more credit

Janet Jackson is going on tour this year. You should already be screaming. Let's celebrate by going over seven times Ms. Jackson deserved more credit.  7. That time she scared us to death with "What About" "What About" was the most dramatic moment of "The Velvet Rope," a blistering anthem about abuse and broken trust in a relationship. Janet annihilated us at the VH1's 1998 Fashion Awards with this strutting, grimacing performance. She is serious and she pulls it off. 6. Her awesome non-single "Strawberry Bounce" is a bopping jam "Damita Jo" is not Janet's strongest album, but it does contain this salacious little bop. Try to get it out of your head. You can't. 5. She faced off against her dance mentor Paula Abdul at the 1990 American Music Awards Paula Abdul choreographed Janet's earliest videos, so it was utterly bad-ass to see the two pop divas square off with juxtaposed routines at the 1990 American Music Awards. »

186 days until Star Wars: 'Return of the Jedi' cast don't know what Ewoks are in rare film

In 1982, a strange video was created during the filming of “Return of the Jedi.” A pseudo-documentary starring 11-year old Warwick Davis, “Return of the Ewok” is a fictional account of how the boy landed his role as Wicket and came to be part of the final Star Wars film. Clocking in at 24 minutes, the rare behind-the-scenes footage includes cameos by Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher…all in costume. You can watch the glorified home video in its entirety below, but the footage of the main cast begins around the 7:30 minute mark. In costume, Davis approaches Harrison Ford’s trailer for advice non where Ewoks live, but the actor has no idea what an Ewok is. Neither Hamill nor Fisher have any clue either, though Carrie takes the initiative and sends Davis to probable doom in the wastes of Tatooine.  Should you choose to follow Warwick Davis' »

Mark Ruffalo says Robert Downey, Jr. says he's in 'Captain America: Civil War' so...

Are you over your "Age of Ultron" hangover?  Well, get excited True Believers because filming is already well underway on Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War."  The sequel has becoming highly anticipated not just because its following up one of one of the studio's most critically acclaimed productions, "Captain America: Winter Soldier," but because it may end up being an unintentional mini-"Avengers" movie.   Since it was announced late last year, "Civil War" has been pitched as a Steve Rogers vs. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) endeavor and a press release from the production specifically noted that Avengers such as the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Vision (Paul Bettany), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and War Machine (Don Cheadle) would appear in the film.  That's a lot of Earth's Mightiest Heroes for a "Captain America" movie so no one would have assumed the lack of Thor or »

Joe Dante and Anton Yelchin on the way film fandom informs 'Burying The Ex'

Joe Dante is one of my favorite people. You'll actually get some Joe Dante stories in the final two parts of my "25 Years In La" series, but even before that, you'll get a video interview that we've cut up into three pieces for you. Last week, on the same morning we all learn that Christopher Lee had passed away, Joe came to the HitFix studios along with Anton Yelchin, who is the star of his new film "Burying The Ex," which will be in theaters on Friday. I've interviewed Yelchin a few times, and I think he's one of those guys we'll be seeing in films for the next 40 years, easy. He's playing the game the right way on the studio level, having played Kyle Reese the last time they tried to reboot the "Terminator" series and appearing as Chekov in the new ongoing "Star Trek" film series. He's also »

Everyone shut up about Kit Harington’s non-existent haircut

Warning: Game Of Thrones Season 5 And Beyond Spoilers Ahead! The Internet is ablaze today with smug “I told you so!” think pieces about “Game of Thrones.” All of them — oddly enough — revolving around the length of Kit Harington’s hair. All you have to do is Google Kit Harington hair and you’ll pull up a smorgasbord of stories about how Of Course fans should’ve known Jon Snow was going to die because he cut his contractually-obligated hair after “Game of Thrones” wrapped filming back in December 2014. There’s only one problem with all these stories. They don’t make a lick of sense. All that short hair Kit has in “Testament of Youth”? It’s a wig. But that not even the “Gotcha!” moment most folks are running with. No, the Jon Snow death spoiler supposedly came when Harington walked the red carpet for “Testament of Youth” in January. »

Review: Amy Poehler's tremendous work anchors the emotional 'Inside Out'

While it's clear that each new release from Pixar seems to spur people to offer a fresh assessment of the company's entire output, I'd rather not immediately try to figure out where "Inside Out" lands by comparison. It seems like a reductive way to approach this surprisingly sophisticated emotional experience. Co-directors Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen have told a very, very small-scale story when you look at what happens in the actual physical world. But in doing so, they've done something very powerful, because they have paid full respect to just how turbulent and important the inner life of a child can be. Ah, hell, who am I kidding? "Inside Out" works because we are all always wrestling with the particular balance required to keep us functioning. The film imagines five distinct beings that work in harmony (hopefully) inside each person: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. To be fair, »

Mindy Kaling has a controversial choice for the hottest Disney prince

"Inside Out" is, like most Pixar films, a majestic experiment in fantasy and imagination. Unlike most Pixar films, it directly investigates what makes imagination so powerful. The newest Pixar adventure chronicles the life of a girl named Riley, whose emotional life is powered (literally, at a control station) by five brain inhabitants named Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). While all five characters enjoy moments of jubilation and panic, it's Disgust who seems to have the most fun. She smarts off and grumbles in a way that would make Lucy Van Pelt proud. We caught up with Kaling, whose show "The Mindy Project" just moved to Hulu, to discuss the thrill of voicing such a prickly character. We also grilled her about the hottest Disney and Pixar characters. Her answers may surprise you, even though you'll probably find it hard to disagree. »

4 Ways "The Lion King" Scarred Me For Life

In 1994 on this day, Disney’s “The Lion King” was released in theaters. I was four years old and distinctly remember being too scared to see it. When I finally did, on VHS in the safety of my own home, I found that it was indeed a frightening film, and to be totally honest I hold that opinion to this day. I don’t know if it’s the fact that Scar kills his own brother by pushing him off a cliff into a deadly stampede, or the constant threat of desperate, flesh eating hyenas with cruel intentions, but something about this movie chills me to my very soul. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful and life-affirming spectacle, it just has some very dark and complicated undertones. And hey, I’m not complaining, I love dark and complicated undertones, it’s just that as a sheltered and »

'Jurassic World' claws past 'The Avengers' for the biggest opening weekend ever

Universal Pictures' amazing year keeps getting better and better.  The venerable studio hasn't been at the top of the charts that often over the past decade, but started off 2015 with the blockbusters "Fifty Shades of Grey" and "Furious 7." The latter shocked the industry by becoming the no. 3 highest grossing film worldwide of all-time after "Titanic" and "Avatar."  Based on the box office results of this past weekend it may soon have some major competition on that historic chart. Final numbers are in and not only did "Jurassic World" win the three-day frame, but the Colin Trevorrow directed action flick became the no. 1 U.S. opener of all-time earning a massive $208.8 million.  That surpasses the previous record holder, "Marvel's The Avengers," which took in $207.4 million a little over three years ago.  For context, many box office watchers thought the fourth installment in Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic" series would earn, at most, »

More than just Pixar's best, 'Inside Out' is a new animation masterpiece

15 June 2015 10:18 AM, PDT

"Inside Out" isn't just Pixar Animation Studios' best film to date, it's one of the best films of the 21st century. That's a big bite, I know, but that's where I was left after the emotional, mature, brilliantly examining and creative experience of the movie. It is the project that most completely reflects the studio's tenets of refined storytelling and entertainment, a mission statement so often repeated as to flirt with the platitudinous. Yet "Inside Out" reminds you how real it is, how powerful cinema can be and how profoundly it can explore, reflect and express the human condition. This is why we project images in dark rooms, to achieve heights such as these. I could tell nearly a year ago, at a special footage presentation for the film in Los Angeles, that if "Inside Out" was going to be a success, it would be because of deep personal beginnings. »

Sunday Ratings: Golden State's Game 5 triumph leads ABC Sunday

15 June 2015 8:54 AM, PDT

Fast National ratings for Sunday, June 14, 2015. The Golden State Warriors took control of the NBA Finals with a relatively comfortable Game 5 victory, as ABC remained in control of the primetime ratings race. With many viewers also basing their evenings around the "Game of Thrones" finale on HBO and whatnot, ABC's network competition barely made a ripple. Remember, as always, that this is time period data and not reflective of the ratings for the basketball game itself, especially with one of the teams hailing from the West Coast. Let's get to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 5.4 rating for Sunday night, tops in the key demographic. Fox and NBC were a distant second with a 0.7 key demo rating, followed by CBS' 0.5 key demo rating for the night. Overall, ABC averaged an estimated 14.93 million viewers and an 8.6 rating/16 share for Sunday night. There was a big drop to CBS' 4.755 million »

So who actually died in the 'Game of Thrones' season finale?

15 June 2015 7:20 AM, PDT

Last night's "Game of Thrones" finale was particularly bloody, even by this show's standards, but a lot of the "deaths" were presented in pretty ambiguous fashion, while others seemed designed to be overturned for the needs of the story. For the most part, dead on "Game of Thrones" means dead, but not always, as we've seen with Beric Dondarrion, and as we see in this very episode with the FrankenMountain. There are some characters whose fate is left ambiguous, and others whose apparent deaths might not make long-term sense for the narrative. And then there are those whose deaths you can almost certainly count on sticking. So let's take a walk through the episode's potential deaths in chronological order to figure out who has the best chance of breathing early in season 6. »

'Game of Thrones' Book Club: 'Mother's Mercy' is severely lacking in this traumatic finale

14 June 2015 11:38 PM, PDT

Each week, HitFix Harpy will be hosting the "Game of Thrones" book club. A safe space where readers of "A Song of Ice and Fire" can come to dissect the changes to the series and debate what will happen next. All without fear they'll accidentally spoil something for non-readers. ************ That’s all he wrote folks. In some cases literally. Tonight’s season finale of “Game of Thrones” butted right up against where Martin last left Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Cersei Lannister, and Jeyne Poole/Sansa Stark. Now we just have to wait 10 months to see what happens next. Unless “The Winds of Winter” comes out before next season, we’re completely off the map now. Warning: This Post Is Dark And Full Of Spoilers. Discussion All The Way Through “The Winds Of Winter“ Beyond This Point. #1: Jon Snow falls for the oldest trick in the book. Image Credit: HBO »
