Joseph Fiennes Leads Cast in ‘Chariots of Fire’ ‘Sequel’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

London — Joseph Fiennes, who was BAFTA nominated for “Shakespeare in Love,” has taken the role of Scottish runner and devout Christian Eric Liddell in “The Last Race,” which plays like an unofficial sequel to “Chariots of Fire.”

Liddell’s feats as an athlete, and his rivalry with Harold Abrahams, were immortalized in “Chariots of Fire,” which won four Oscars, including best picture. “The Last Race” portrays Liddell’s life after the events depicted in “Chariots of Fire,” when he worked as a teacher and missionary in China, the Independent newspaper reported. He was interned by the Japanese in 1943, and died in the prison camp of a brain tumor.

The film is written and directed by Stephen Shin, and co-directed by Michael Parker. It also stars Chinese-Canadian actor Xiao “Shawn” Dou, who plays Liddell’s friend Xu Niu, and British actress Elizabeth Arends. It will be distributed in China by Alibaba Pictures. »

Judy Greer and Cheryl Hines have joined Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern in Fox Searchlight’s dramedy “Wilson,” which has started shooting in Minnesota.

Craig Johnson (“The Skeleton Twins”) is directing from a screenplay by Daniel Clowes, based on Clowes’ graphic novel of the same name. Mary Jane Skalski and Jared Ian Goldman are producing.

Harrelson stars as a lonely, neurotic middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife (Dern) and gets a shot at happiness when he learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabelle Amara) he’s never met. The graphic novel was published in 2010.

Fox Searchlight’s David Greenbaum and Richard Gold are overseeing the project.

Clowes also wrote the adaptations for two of his other graphic novels-turned-movies — 2001’s “Ghost World” and 2006’s “Art School Confidential.”

Greer is in FX’s “Married,” “Jurassic World” and the upcoming “Ant-Man.” Hines starred in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Suburgatory.”

American Ultra: Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg Get Bloody in New Images, Posters

4 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In addition to Steve’s on-set interview with stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, Lionsgate has provided us with a trio of new images and two trippy posters from the action-comedy American Ultra to share with our readers today. Written by Chronicle scribe Max Landis and directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X), the film revolves around a stoner (Eisenberg) and his girlfriend (Stewart) who find their lives disrupted when a government operation descends upon their small town with the aim of wiping the stoner out, who is in fact a sleeper agent. The excellent first trailer and these new images certainly play up the fact that Eisenberg and Stewart’s characters get very bruised and bloodied over the course of the film, and indeed we saw in the trailer that the actors weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Additionally, the posters play up the film's stoner vibe. Check »

But what happened after that was a complete nightmare, he told Canadian Press this morning. Sarah Jones, a 27-year-old camera assistant, was killed when a train plowed into the props laying perpendicular on the tracks. Randall Miller, Jay Sedrish and Schwartz… »

The Wrecking Crew review – paean to the unsung heroes of 60s pop

18 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This band of session musicians helped some of the biggest acts of the era – from the Beach Boys to the Monkees – to produce their signature sounds

For a while – before authenticity mattered – the discerning pop producer of 60s La wanted only one group of session musicians on their recording: the Wrecking Crew. That’s them raising Good Vibrations on Pet Sounds, playing to exhaustion on Phil Spector’s hits for the Ronettes and recording the Monkees’ songs for the band to ape.

NBC Renews Aquarius for Season 2

48 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

NBC has somewhat surprisingly renewed its 1960s drama Aquarius, starring David Duchovny, for a second season. Like the recently cancelled Hannibal, its ratings haven’t been great (it’s been pulling about a 1.2 share, whereas Hannibal slid to a 0.5 among adults 18-49), but then again, that could be in part because of NBC’s experiment with putting the entire season online after the first episode aired on TV. (NBC adds that “Strong Digital Performance Is Key in Bringing Back Well-Reviewed Series” ... at least they're counting online views now. Allegedly).  [caption id="attachment_465255" align="alignright" width="350"] Image via NBC[/caption] Despite the mediocre numbers, NBC seems willing to invest in Aquarius going forward, perhaps partially because Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony) on the show won’t go Full Manson (never go Full Manson) until Season 2, which could get more people to tune in (facts are facts!) Another major component is that, according to the NBC press release, the »

Watch: First Episodes Of HBO's 'Ballers' And 'The Brink' In Full

53 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With "True Detective" dominating audience eyeballs and media coverage this week, you have have forgotten that HBO debuted two other shows on Sunday night: "Ballers" and "The Brink." But now's your chance to catch up with them again for the first time. HBO has dropped the first full episodes for each show on Facebook. "Ballers" stars Dwayne Johnson and Rob Corddry and is basically "Entourage" in the world of sports. I didn't particularly care for it, but the glossy sheen makes it somewhat engaging, but not necessarily filling. As for "The Brink," Tim Robbins and Jack Black lead this one set in the world of geopolitics, and following the personalities trying to stop Wwiii. Give them a look below, and let us know what you think in the comments section. Note: "Ballers" is offline at the moment, but we'll add it as soon as it becomes available. (function(d, s, »

Ted 2 Review: Painfully Funny and Unbearably Sluggish

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In my review of Ted, I noted how director/co-writer/star Seth MacFarlane had backed off the cartoonish style from his TV series Family Guy to provide something that was still foul-mouthed and abrasive, but in a traditional story. He played it safe as far as the narrative was concerned, and there was a sense that MacFarlane dealt with emotional beats like a kid eating his vegetables. However, the movie was still funny and showed that he had the maturity to skillfully deliver immature jokes. For the sequel, Ted 2, MacFarlane clearly has more freedom and confidence to make the film he wants to make, and sometimes that indulgence is refreshing and other times its an absolute chore as he goes out of his way to reach a single fantastic joke. At least 20 minutes could be cut from Ted 2, but MacFarlane thinks everything he’s doing is genius, and »

Rumor: Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War to Feature a Second Villain

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We're confident in saying that Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War will be pitting Earth's mightiest heroes against Thanos the Mad Titan, but some casting calls suggest that a secondary villain may be showing up as well. Before we get to just who that might be, let's play a little catch-up to see where we are now. At the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor is in search of the Infinity Stones/Gems, some of which have already been accounted for, and all of which can be placed in an incredibly powerful device known as the Infinity Gauntlet. The film's mid-credits stinger shows Josh Brolin's Thanos griping about his incompetent minions and their inability to get the job done, so he grasps the golden gauntlet and affirms to do it himself. So unless Marvel wants to push Thanos further down the road, he should finally make his debut (for more than a few seconds, »

The Essentials: The 5 Best Rachel McAdams Performances

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

"Cute as a button!" Peruse fansites and celebrity gossip blogs and it's a term that crops up again and again in relation to actress Rachel McAdams. It's apt, as far as it goes, and it goes pretty far -- the adorable dimples, the bright eyes, the hopeful, illuminating smile  -- part of McAdams' individual allure is her personable, approachable, relatable attractiveness. If it were the 1950s and the term still had useful currency (who even knows their neighbors any more?), she could be a girl-next-door, appealing to both men and women, who like to imagine themselves either with her or as her, depending on preference. But this widespread appeal has a downside: it can typecast the sort of roles that executives and marketing teams most readily believe the public will buy her in (wholesome, sweet-natured young women more likely to be marriage material than the stuff of sexual fantasies), and »

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Revisited: “Hasta la Vista, Baby”

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Much like John Connor, The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (a.k.a “T2”), are both the products of and creators of their time. The Terminator came from a grittier, meaner brand of R-rated, 80s action that melded bloody action with desperate measures. They’re movies that are sweaty, ugly, and gleefully violent mixed with just a bit of campiness. Move to the 90s and everything is much cleaner and glossier. It’s the decade that saw the rise of the PG-13 action film, and the vanishing of the gritty aesthetic. Even though the movie is rated-r, Terminator 2 helped set the tone for this new wave of action movies. It’s drastically different than the original, features far more visual effects, and at the time was the most expensive movie ever made (James Cameron: Wanting His Movies to Cost More than the Gdp of Small Countries since 1991). T2 showed »

First Manhattan Season 2 Trailer Keeps the Questions Coming

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Last year, the rebranded Wgn America debuted two new series, each with a historical setting: the batshit insane Salem, and the far more demure Manhattan. Manhattan is set in 1943 Los Alamos, the site of the Manhattan Project, which saw the development of the atomic bomb. Everything is a secret, not only from public knowledge, but even among those working at the facility themselves, who are confined to a true need-to-know basis. The first teaser for Season 2 (I haven’t had a chance to catch up with Season 1 yet, although I hear it’s really good! Too much good TV …) has the show’s main characters being asked “Are you good at keep secrets?” “Would you sacrifice your family for the good of the country?” “Have you ever had sexual relations with a communist?” And most importantly, “Have you ever conspired to destroy the world?” To that one the reply is: maybe. »

Dana Nachman's 'Batkid Begins' Is a True Life Capracorn Tale

1 hour ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

A 2015 Slamdance premiere, “Batkid Begins” is a true life Capracorn tale that pleased Julia Roberts so much that she will play the real-life heroine of Dana Nachman’s documentary, charismatic Make-a-Wish executive Patricia Wilson, a woman to whom few dare say no, in New Line Cinema's upcoming remake. She masterminded the astonishing San Francisco November 15, 2013 event, attended by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country, to give 5-year-old leukemia patient Miles Scott a chance to save Gotham with Batman at his side. Well over a billion tuned in around the world, including President Obama. Documentarian Nachman’s movie is as fun as it is heart-tugging, and should do well in theaters. It’s a crowdpleaser well-edited by Kurt Kuenne, a Bay Area filmmaker of “Dear Zachary” fame, who understood that the dynamic duo at the center of the film were the kid and the actor playing Batman. »

'Star Trek 3' Filming Underway

Paramount has yet to make an official announcement, but stars Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana have posted pictures on Instagram announcing their first day back as Spock and Uhura, filming Star Trek 3 in British Columbia's Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. Under the direction of Justin Lin ("True Detective", Fast & Furious 6), there isn't much known about the third film in the franchise. Rumors suggest the title may be Star Trek Beyond and Idris Elba will be playing the film's villain. We may get more in a few days and normally I would say to expect something from Comic Con, but it was already announced Paramount, along with Sony and Marvel, will be skipping the fanboy/girl event this year.
